In Greek mythology the owl was consecrated to Athena, the goddess of wisdom. Therefore, he was considered a protector of the Greek armies, and if an owl flew over the army before the battle, it was a sign of victory. The owl was frequently depicted on ancient coins, and on the modern Euro of Greece.

Pelicans
One of the curiosities of the island of Mykonos is that the visitor can find pelicans in any corner of the island, and they are already a symbol. They are very beautiful and quite large birds - they measure around one meter -, with pink feathers and an immense orange beak. The most surprising thing is that they move between the inhabitants of the island and the visitors without any fear. Hence, they have become the favorite models of tourists who photograph and film around the island.
Although the undisputed star is the pelican Petros who "settled" in Mykonos in 1954 and officially became the island's mascot. According to the local people, a fisherman found an injured pelican and, after treating it, released it, but the animal returned and decided to stay in the capital. He was so loved by the people of Mykonos that when he died in 1986, after spending 30 years on the island, he declared official mourning in Mykonos. And it was Jackie Kennedy Onassis who gifted Mykonos with its second pelican: Irene. Much later, the Hamburg Zoo donated another specimen that was renamed after the first, Petros. And not long ago, the population adopted another wounded pelican they named Nicolas.
The Best party✓
The island of Mykonos is an island to party, dance all night and visit the different bars, pubs, clubs and discos at a pace that many of the partygoers who visit it seek. In this sense, it could be said that Mykonos is opposed to the island of Santorini, since in it, most of the tourists seek tranquility and rest; a vacation on a paradisiacal island, doing different activities and discovering the beaches, monuments and the volcano.
In a way, many of those who come to Santorini come as a couple; it is rather a more romantic tourism. While a multitude of young people come to Mykonos, groups of friends who practice sun, beach and party tourism, a bit like it happens in Ibiza or St Tropez.

Mykonos Beaches
The beaches of Mykonos, natural wonders, are one of the greatest attractions of the Aegean island. Hundreds of tourists enjoy the baths, the sun and, above all, the nightlife throughout the year. Since the beaches are also places where parties are organized; in many cases they become authentic open-air discos. From Platis Yalos, a town located near the capital of Mykonos, small boats leave every day (especially in high season) for all the island's beaches.
As for the museums, the small Archaeological Museum stands out, in which sculptures and different objects that come from the island of Delos and Rhenia are preserved; the Naval Museum and the Ethnographic Museum, where musical instruments, furniture, etc. are exhibited.
Monuments and museums
The island of Mykonos has about 400 churches, among which the Church of the Virgin Paraportiani, the cathedral ... In the town of Lino, in the south of the island, are the ruins of Portes. Also striking is the Monastery of the Panagia Turliani, in the Ano Mera area, with its red dome, the marble tower and the beautiful icons that it houses inside (you have to pay entrance). And in Paleocastro are the remains of an old fortification.
The windmills of Mykonos are part of the landscape and are already a symbol of the island. They are in the upper area of the Mykonos town district (Chora), in a large viewpoint overlooking the sea and the beautiful old area of white houses, Little Venice. But there are also windmills in Alevkantrra (Little Venice of Mykonos) and in the town of Ano Mera, which is 8 kilometers from Mykonos.

Although this accommodation is old fishermen's huts paid at the price of a luxury hotel. And some artists have settled in some of the picturesque houses attracted by the magic of Little Venice.
Today, the neighborhood has spread to the Kastro area. And on the ground floor of many of these houses you will find some of the most visited cocktail bars on the island, as well as art galleries where artists based on the island exhibit. Not far from Little Venice is the central square of the capital, Mykonos Cathedral and a very old Catholic church.
