He rubbed at the back of his neck in response to the question, âIn a manner of speaking, yes.â Javier answered after a moment of contemplation. âI have someone from before who would probably buy me anything I liked. But I feel â it feels wrong to ask. Considering everything.â Not that anyone who knew his life prior to this couldnât figure out who he was talking about; but Javier still felt the need for a measure of caution.
âBut having my own money to purchase things? Thatâs difficult, yes. A big change.â At least there was little that could be seized. Most of his belongings had been with Jason, his money had essentially been Jasonâs for the most part. The things that had been taken from him were few. âI suppose I made my bed though. Time to lie in it.â

âConsidering everything?â Vered genuinely was curious what the man meant. It seemed like he thought he deserved his position as a traitor, but what did that mean? How could anyone think themselves deserving of such a horrible fate?
Vered felt something akin to frustration well in his chest and make his palms itch. It was barbaric what this city did to its creatures. Regardless of what the supposed traitors had done, being collared and kept in a cell seemed awfulâ not to mention all of the violence heâd seen. Most of the humanâs heâd met werenât even that old during the war and yet their generation was forced into a life of cruel servitude. âI donât think anyone should be put in your position,â Vered said abruptly. âItâs barbaric.â Perhaps it was out of line for him to say, but he didnât care. He and his people were different. Life didnât work the same way here and he couldnât understand it though heâd tried to.
