Vash groaned, turning over in the bed as sleep began to slowly ease off him. There was a lacking warmth, his hand feeling around trying to find him again in the bed.
"Blondie," Wolfwood's voice was low, the familiar sound and absence of his body pulling enough sleepiness off for Vash to open his eyes. Confusion replaced it as he looked at Wolfwood sat up in the bed, the whole house still dark and moonlight telling him sunrise wasn't even near.
He propped himself up on an elbow, "why're you up so early?" He let out a yawn as he rubbed his eyes, "and why am I?"
Wolfwood awkwardly smiled, "sorry, I just wanted to…hold on." Vash watched him get up from the bed, walking past the screen out of view. His still partly asleep mind began to turn over the nervousness he'd just seen, confusion building at the situation before him.
His thoughts were silenced as Wolfwood came back around the screen, holding a plated donut with a single candle stuck in it, "happy birthday."
Vash sat up fully, any remnants of sleep gone, "how did you…"
"I have my ways," he shrugged, passing it to Vash, "sorry it's not much. I don't think I could fit 150 candles on it even if I tried." He kissed Vash's cheek, sitting back down on the bed in front of him.
He stared in disbelief as his heart pounded, his eyes feeling hot and a lump forming in his throat, "but…why not wait till we woke up later?"
"The girls, Livio and Home are gonna show up to surprise you," Vash's eyes widened a bit, guess he'd be busy today. "And I wanted to be the first one to tell you," he chuckled as he rubbed the back of his neck, "first gift too. Hope that's alright with you."
If he hadn't been holding that plate, he would've jumped on Wolfwood right there, his chest burning. That dimple in his smile was close to making him throw it. Instead he held it aside as he pulled Wolfwood into a kiss, holding his face as he began to move from his lips to his cheeks to his nose to his forehead to his eyes to that damn dimple.
"Hey!" Wolfwood laughed, "it's not my birthday!"
He kissed him again, this time lingering on his lips, "thank you."
He smiled warmly at him, "anytime Blondie. Now are you gonna make a wish or what?"
"Oh, right," he brought the donut back over holding it in front of himself. Before he could blow it out, a sudden pit hit his heart.
It wasn't just his birthday. It was his first birthday without…well in terms of actually celebrating it together it'd been over a century, but this time it was just him here, he was no longer somewhere else celebrating alone too.
Did he even…had he ever celebrated it?
"Hey," Vash looked up at Wolfwood, his vision blurry before he wiped his eyes for him, "we can go visit him now if you want to. I uh…I have extra candles too."
His heart began to burn so intensely again, if not for the ache he'd think he'd explode, "yeah, I'd like that."
He looked back down at the candle, then back at Wolfwood who was looking away sheepishly.
Vash blew out the candle, his wish heavy on his heart as he smiled at him.

Prompt Day 7: First Time
Summary
Everyone's heard the rumors. Vash the Stampede: The Humanoid Typhoon, officially recognized natural disaster, menace to society, a legend in the bedroom.
Wolfwood's not so sure about that last one.
[context: this is another moment from my Stargaze AU]
"But what are we gonna do about the honeymoon…"
"Honeymoon?" They stood in the motel room, Eriks' arm wrapped around Wolfwood's neck, still holding the bag with rings.
"That's what you do after you get married right?" Wolfwood smirked, "groom sweeps up the bride and they run off to wherever so they can go at it."
"We don't have to, I don't think we can even afford anywhere special," Vash laughed.
"Sure we don't have to, but don't you wanna?" Wolfwood leaned in closer with a grin that made Eriks fight back a giggle, "even if it's just a day, we should celebrate it." He kissed his cheek before pulling away to put away the other supplies they'd gotten during the errand, "we'd probably only get a day or two based on every other place we've been."
Eriks stood there for a moment, watching Wolfwood as his heart beat with excitement. He could barely stand to wait, he almost wanted to take the rings out and get it over with right now. They'd taken over a year to get here after that initial "proposal" though, they didn't want to just rush it now.
A honeymoon…a few days alone with Wolfwood with no one around would be the dream but that wasn't…unless…
"I have an idea!"
~
The fan creaked overhead as the wind from outside pushed through gaps of the house, making it turn. Morning sunlight spilled through the large cathedral-like windows, shining right onto the bed. Wolfwood groaned, slowly opening his eyes to the brightness, taking a deep breath and wiping them with his left hand before they got caught on the shine coming from his finger. He looked down at the gold ring, smiling before looking at Vash. There was a small trail of drool as he laid there wrapped in Wolfwood's other arm, still fast asleep. The warmth in his chest grew at the silver ring on Vash's right hand.
He gently pushed the strands of hair out of his face, he knew he was exhausted from the previous night (Wolfwood had made sure of that), but he wasn't going to spend the first morning of their honeymoon alone. "Vash," he rubbed his shoulder, "it's time to get up." Vash groaned, reaching out with his right arm and pulling himself closer into Wolfwood, nuzzling into his chest.
Wolfwood rolled his eyes, running his hand through the long blonde locks, "come on Blondie, you don't want breakfast?" There was no response. He let out a sigh, resorting to his extreme measure as he sat up in the bed.
Vash began to whine as he tried to pull him back down with his one arm, "come back…"
"You're not hungry?"
"No," he whined as he continued to try and pull him back, eyes still shut.
"Not even for a donut?" His eyes opened to see Wolfwood holding a pink box with a handle.
Vash sat up, "when did you get these?!"
"I hid em with the stuff," he smirked as he handed them to Vash, "all for you." Vash looked down at the box before looking back up at Wolfwood, that warm smile he loved spreading across his face as he set the box aside before kissing Wolfwood, his hand resting on his cheek.
Wolfwood grinned, "not eating a donut first? You really are into me."
Vash chuckled as he looked at the silver earring that matched his ring on Wolfwood's ear, "maybe."
"Does that mean I can have a piece of one?"
"Don't push it."
He laughed, "worth a shot." He kissed him again before pulling away with an even bigger grin on his face, "we're married!"
"We are!"
"And I officiated it."
"You did," Vash giggled as Wolfwood pulled him in closer by his waist.
"Maybe we should've done a little extra."
"Like what?"
"What about one of those just married things on the back of Angelina?"
Vash laughed, "could you even stand it?"
"No, the sound would drive me nuts."
He began to twirl his fingers in the hair on the back of Wolfwood's head, the sensation and that warmth in his blue eyes making his insides melt, "you're my husband now."
Wolfwood's eyes widened as his face suddenly felt hot, that warm gaze becoming unbearable. Vash smirked, "you okay, my husband?" Wolfwood swallowed, the words meant for him coming from Vash's voice turning that warmth into a heat as his brain struggled to keep a grip on itself. Vash moved closer, causing him to back away stumbling onto his back as he looked up at Vash over him.
"What, do you like it when I call you that?" Vash's smirk had become a mischievous grin, making his heart pound so hard that if not for his ribcage it would've left his chest long ago.
Chills went down his spine as Vash's fingertips began to run down his chest, the look in his eyes having that hunger that made him tremble. "I…I'm hungry," he looked to the side to gain some of his mind back, "how about breakfast first?"
"Sure," Wolfwood let out a sigh of relief before it was quickly retracted as Vash leaned down, their chests pressing against each other and his earring brushing against Wolfwood's cheek as he softly spoke in his ear, "my husband Nicholas~"
Within the blink of an eye, Vash found himself on his back, Wolfwood's left hand holding his arm above his head as he stared up at him, his face now flushed, but the grin still there. He glanced between the gold ring on his finger and the gold earring on Vash's ear as a grin spread across his own face.
"I thought you were hungry?"
"I am," he leaned down, kissing along Vash's neck as he began to move down his body.
~
The chair creaked as Vash leaned against Wolfwood, pressing his face into his shoulder and pulling the blanket around them closer. They had pushed the chairs on the porch together as much as possible to watch the sunset for their last night, the air heavy over them.
It had been several days now, one more than they had initially planned in the house. In the short time, they had gotten comfortable with the routine, with the house. Their things had spots they went, they woke up every morning and stayed in bed for a while before breakfast, which Wolfwood would always make while Vash held him from behind, then they'd end up spending the day talking as they ended up fixing something in the house, relaxing on the porch, or crawling back into bed. They'd gotten so used to it, it wasn't till the food was visibly low that they remembered they weren't staying here. That they had to leave. That it had to end.
Even if the chances were low, Home did know about this house. They could come checking at anytime. Not to mention, Legato was now actively hunting them. Staying still was only increasing the risk day by day.
But god, he wanted to. He wanted to stay in this house with Wolfwood, he didn't want to go back to Eriks yet. Nothing would change between them, but this quiet life he craved to have wasn't possible as Eriks.
It was impossible as the Stampede.
Wolfwood blew out smoke as the bits of orange grew smaller and smaller on the horizon, their hands squeezing tighter together. His heart ached, wishing for the sun to stop moving, or at the very least just move slower.
Just one more day…please…
As the last bits of sun disappeared, the moonlight beginning to sparkle on the sand, Wolfwood lifted their hands up, kissing the back of Vash's, "we'll come back." Vash looked at him, his eyes feeling hot as Wolfwood smiled at him weakly, "there's a couple things we gotta fix up still right?"
Vash looked at him for a moment, taking a deep inhale before smiling back, "yeah. It'll be nice to have a shower."
"What about a bath?"
Vash leaned back against Wolfwood, "that would be a lot of water."
"We could reuse it."
"Gross!" Vash let out a chuckle.
"Don't even, I know you've been through way nastier."
"You're not wrong. Where would we even get the money?"
"There's gotta be odd jobs somewhere around here, someone always needs somebody doing something."
"Maybe we go out on trips to get money and then come back?"
"Sounds good to me. Though…" Wolfwood looked off, a bit lost in thought before shaking his head, "never mind."
"Hm?"
"Don't worry about it, just thinking of what else the house needs," his thumb rubbed against the back of Vash's hand, "one day."
His throat felt tight as his vision began to blur, "one day."
He watched the shadow of smoke moving across the sand, following it to the figure sitting there, moonlight tracing him and the cross beside him.
"You couldn't sleep either huh?"
Vash smiled, "how could I?" He walked over, sitting down next to him, his eyes resting on the dunes in front of them as Wolfwood took another drag.
"Only hours away now." They were almost to the spot of The Great Fall, taking a break for the night so the girls, who were sleeping in the van, could rest.
And so there could be one last breath before what felt like the end of…well everything.
"You feeling alright Blondie?" Vash took a deep breath, the ache of the future seeming to press down on his shoulders as the past pressed his sternum. Wolfwood turned the cigarette over in his mouth, looking to the side, "right, dumb question."
He smiled softly, "thanks for asking."
They sat there for a moment as Wolfwood blew out another cloud of smoke, "...you're still not sure what to do about Knives."
He looked to the side, feeling his insides begin to twist together, "I've got no idea, all I've done is hope I do the right things in the past, but I'm not sure I can this time."
"You will, it's honestly a miracle you manage to."
Vash began to curl into himself, "it's different. I've pleaded with Nai, but no matter what I say it's like he doesn't want to understand. I can't let him hurt everyone but I don't know how to get him to stop other than…I won't do that." His fist dug into the sand, "I don't know if I can do it."
Wolfwood's fingers brushed against Vash's palm as he pushed his fingers from the fist, interlocking them with his, "you will, anyone else I'd say fat chance but you manage to do the impossible…honestly, how impossible the things you manage to pull off is why I knew I could save Livio." He squeezed his hand, "the impossibility of you being there is the reason I'm still here."
Vash's eyes widened as he looked at Wolfwood, his heart pounding so hard he couldn't get the air in his lungs. His eyes drifted to the silver hair, that overwhelming flood of emotion returning again as he smiled at him. If they were still alone, he'd run his hands through that hair and pull him close like he had in that house down the hill from the orphanage. Instead, he leaned over, resting his head on Wolfwood's shoulder, making him suddenly look back to the others.
"What are you looking at?"
"Making sure Livio's still out."
"Light sleeper?"
"Yeah, so don't try anything."
His heart twisted, a sudden desperation gripping it, "not even a kiss?" Vash looked up at him, their faces only centimeters from each other.
Wolfwood stared back, his brows creasing slightly as a sadness began to come up in his eyes that only twisted his heart more. Then, a smile spread across his face. "What, you think we won't after it's over? We'll have plenty of time to," he paused, thinking for a moment as his smile turned to a smirk, "behind a locked door. Far away from everyone."
Vash's eyes went wide for a moment, a sudden lightness blooming in his heart as he laughed, rubbing his thumb against Wolfwood's hand, "and?"
"And? Careful now, I might not be able to keep quiet if you start that." He moved closer, their noses brushing against each other, Vash giggling at the touch, "what else…when was the last time you got a donut?"
He thought for a moment. When was the last time? He hadn't had any as Eriks, didn't have time to get one before he was taken, "I think it's been years?"
"Years?!"
"Shh," Vash laughed, "keep it down!"
"How are you still standing? We gotta get you one of those."
His heart started to sink as a fear began to work it's way into his heart, the warmth of Wolfwood's hand feeling precious, "…maybe a few."
"One whole box at least."
After days of sharing space with the girls, Wolfwood really should've assumed that Vash would have some of the same ideas he did. He might've caught on sooner if Vash had closed the damn tent flap beforehand.

The third of my snack-sized fics for @vashwoodweek 2026! For the Day 6 prompt "Semi-public".

This really wasn't fair to Meryl. Or Milly. Neither of them had any idea what was going on just a few feet away from them. Both of them were chattering away, talking about something or other, Wolfwood wasn't exactly sure what. He'd barely been listening five minutes ago, and now?
He wasn't doing much of anything but trying not to make a damn sound.
It had been days since the last time they'd been alone. Traveling between the smaller cities was lengthy at the best of times, but the four of them had been lucky enough to have the luxury and use of Meryl's truck to do it. It meant that packing things around was a lot easier, being on their own schedule was possible, and, for the most part, things were more comfortable.
Usually, anyway, that was the case, but for the last few nights they had all agreed that camping was the best option.
Problem was, Meryl's truck was only loaded with one tent.
Lucky thing was that it was big enough for the four of them, even if Wolfwood had, at one point, threatened to go sleep in the truck if someone didn't stop kicking him.
He'd thought it was Vash. It had turned out to be Meryl, who had kicked him harder when he remarked that she had pretty big feet for such a small person otherwise.
Earlier today, though, they had been lucky. A clerk at a Plant station had pointed out how haphazard their truck was packed, mentioned that the tent was nearly slipping out of the strap that had been securing it to the roof rack. Maybe he'd been looking to be a good samaritan. Or, maybe, and, more likely in Wolfwood's estimation, he'd been wanting to hock his wares.
Which was fine, because even if their tent wasn't 'probably going to split on a surprise rip you didn't have last night!', having two tents couldn't hurt. Wolfwood had considered stealing the damn thing if Meryl hadn't stepped forward first, offering to pay for it.
Maybe she'd gotten sick of the shared quarters, too.
Whatever the reason, the four of them had, finally, become the proud owners of two tents. When they'd decided to stop that night, Vash and Wolfwood had gotten to work setting both of them up.
Wolfwood had intended to put some distance between them. It had been Vash who pointed out that they should keep the two closer together, 'just in case'. In case of what, Wolfwood hadn't known, but Milly had piped up in agreement, and then Meryl had gotten in on it, and before he knew it, Wolfwood was soundly outvoted.
He'd never even gotten around to casting his vote, but that was besides the point.
The whole reason he'd wanted a bit of space had been because of what was happening right now.
Part of him suspected that the real reason Vash had said they should be closer together was because he enjoyed torturing Wolfwood.
"Are you listening to her?"
Vash's voice was a teasing whisper, Wolfwood not needing to see his face to know he would be smiling, all angelic, like he wasn't up to anything.
Like he wasn't palming Wolfwood's half-hard cock through the front of his pants, and hadn't been for a minute now.
A few minutes ago, when Wolfwood had laid back with his head on the pillow he'd made of his rolled up blazer, arms crossed behind it, he'd been ready to tune out whatever the girls were going on about. Maybe he would actually get off to sleep at a decent time, tonight, he'd thought, since Vash had been insistent on them being such close neighbours.
That, and the tent flap was open. For some reason unbeknownst to Wolfwood.
They weren't facing each other, and Meryl and Milly couldn't see into Vash and Wolfwood's tent from theirs, but the open flaps had been left that way for chatting. Vash had been happily keeping up some silly conversation with Milly, something about New Oregon, a conversation that Meryl had quickly involved herself in.
While Wolfwood had laid there, he'd half expected that would be the soundtrack to his dozing off.
He hadn't noticed, though, that Vash's replies were getting fewer and farther between.
Hopefully, Meryl and Milly hadn't noticed either, because it would really interrupt Wolfwood's decent time if either one of them suddenly asked if they were still awake, or if everything was okay over here.
Mostly okay.
Kind of infuriating, but Wolfwood wasn't complaining.
He was, actually, trying not to make too much noise at all. One sound could reveal exactly what they were up to, and he didn't want Vash to stop. He really, really wanted to see where this would go.
Days of sharing a tent and sharing the truck would do that to a guy.
"Not really," he growled, under his breath, cracking an eye open and taking the chance to trust himself to look at Vash.
It was gloomy in the tent, the light of the moons barely spilling past the open flap, but it was bright enough for Wolfwood to see the way the corner of Vash's lower lip caught under his teeth, his sharp canine glinting while he watched Wolfwood.
"Me neither," he whispered back.
For a horrific second, Wolfwood thought the conversation in the next tent had abruptly stopped.
Then Milly sneezed.
"Bless you," Meryl's said.
"Thank you!" Milly replied, all cheery. As always.
Neither of them had any idea.
No idea that Vash's smile was getting wider, practiced fingers sliding open the button of Wolfwood's trousers.
No idea that while Meryl picked up her thread again, her voice a backdrop to the sound of Wolfwood's heart pounding in his ears, Vash was undoing his zipper.
He was a fucking menace. Wolfwood wasn't sure how he was surviving being around him, at all. If it wasn't the danger that came thanks to the fact that Vash's brother was some kind of psychopath who kept company of like-minded freaks, it was this.
The way Vash could make his body react so quickly. The way his touch, the sweet, careful touch of his fingers wrapping around Wolfwood's cock and pulling him free, could make Wolfwood immediately so damn hard and turned on he thought he might explode.
"Stay quiet," Vash whispered, and now Wolfwood could see the smirk on his face, the way his eyes drifted from Wolfwood's face, down to his cock, watching exactly how quickly Wolfwood reacted to him.
It should've been embarrassing, but Wolfwood's brain was too busy being addled to come up with any emotion other than turned on.
Especially when Vash shifted, glancing at his face, meeting his eyes for a second before—
"Blondie—"
Wolfwood hoped that hadn't been too loud. He didn't know, he couldn't really remember the second between Vash looking away from his face, and Vash wrapping his lips around his cock and swallowing him down.
Vaguely, he thought he could hear the girls still chatting. He hoped so.
He didn't have attention to spare making sure, too busy wrapping his finger's in Vash's hair and pulling, torn between wanting him to keep going, the slow heat of his mouth fucking amazing, and needing him to come off.
Vash, in response, hummed, low and quiet, and Wolfwood's free hand pressed to his own mouth, a physical reminder.
Stay. Quiet.
That was hard to do. Between the long nights of feeling Vash's body pressed against his and knowing they couldn't do a damn thing about it, and the short bit of time Vash had spent working him up, Wolfwood was wound, ready to break. He needed this.
And he wasn't going to last long if Vash kept up.
Giving another weak tug to Vash's hair, Wolfwood let out a breath, relief and disappointment flooding into his system in a rush when Vash pulled off.
"Need… a minute," he breathed, closing his eyes. The girls were definitely still talking. Christ, they had no idea. Wolfwood almost felt bad.
Then he heard the telltale sound of Vash's pants coming off.
It was kind of pathetic, the way he had an almost Pavlovian response to that, now. He heard the brush of the fabric, the sound of a zipper, and immediately his interest sparked.
If he was in the right mood.
Which Vash had made more than sure he was.
Opening his eyes, Wolfwood lifted his head, catching sight of Vash as he swung a pale, scarred leg over Wolfwood's hips. He was naked from the waist down, his pants in a crumpled heap, next to his boots in the corner of the tent, away from the open flap so a worm wouldn't crawl into them in the night.
Dressed in only his black turtleneck, and a smile that had lost some of its teasing edge. There was something else there, now, something Wolfwood was smug to see.
Need.
He wasn't the only one suffering.
"Let me," Vash breathed, his flesh hand reaching back, fingers guiding Wolfwood's cock to line up, tip pressing at his hole before Vash sunk down.
Oh, Wolfwood never got tired of this feeling. Vash tight around him, hot, moving so slow like he didn't want either of them to lose it too soon. It was maddening and perfect, and Wolfwood didn't notice his fingers were pressing eager little divots into Vash's thighs until Vash's hands laid over his.
It was such a careful, light touch, in comparison to the way Wolfwood wanted to throw him on his back and take him. Vash would have let it happen, too. Maybe.
He had before.
But now…
Like he'd read his mind, Vash repeated, "let me," before he leaned forward, both hands bracing on Wolfwood's chest as he lifted his hips, and brought them back down.
The whimper he made before he rolled his hips again, head tipping back, was everything. Vash could be infuriating as hell, the most annoying fucking guy on the planet.
But like this, riding Wolfwood with his teeth pressed into his lower lip, fingers curling against Wolfwood's chest as his movements got faster, more needy and greedy already? He was perfect.
Wolfwood didn't need another damn thing. Just the hot squeeze of Vash around him, and the sight of his face.
Pure fucking pleasure.
Wolfwood understood. His hands had moved from Vash's thighs to his hips, guiding him down, hard and quick, short thrusts that were quiet enough, but wicked. Relentless, and neither of them were going to last long.
Vash's eyes were going funny. They always did, when he was getting close, the patterns in his skin lighting up, mimicking in his irises and through the whites, soft and telltale of exactly how good he was feeling.
Wolfwood could do this to him.
That was addictive.
"Nick…" Vash whined, still low, and hopefully low enough.
They needed a hotel again, soon. Wolfwood needed to hear his name whined properly. He needed to hear the shaky gasps Vash made as his movements got erratic, riding Wolfwood hard, chasing his orgasm.
Wolfwood needed to be able to praise Vash properly, instead of gasping, "fuck, Vash," as his head tipped back and his hands gripped tight enough to bruise. That was only warning he could manage while he was supposed to be quiet, before he came, filling Vash up, feeling the hot, slick mess of it spilling out around his cock, Vash's fingernails digging in before—
It was a damn near thing. The sound Vash made before his prosthetic clapped over his own mouth was sudden and a little broken and incredibly hot, even if he made a mess of his turtleneck, and of Wolfwood's shirt, when he came.
Wolfwood couldn't be mad. Vash was gorgeous. Lit up and shaking, spasming around him sweetly enough Wolfwood wished he could go again, right now.
"Bless you!"
Milly's voice, so innocent, so naive, cut through the haze in Wolfwood's brain. Straddling him, Vash's eyes snapped open, meeting his.
The silence felt like it stretched impossibly long before Vash finally opened his mouth.
"Th-thank you!" He called, before he collapsed forward, burying his sudden, helpless giggles into Wolfwood's neck.
In his chest, Wolfwood's heart did something complicated.
Instead of acknowledging it out loud, he turned his head, lips against Vash's ear.
"You're so fucking lucky," he growled, suspecting Vash would feel the curl of his smile against his skin. That was fine. Good, even.
"Yeah," Vash murmured back, shifting his hips, knowing it would get a surprised hitch of breath from Wolfwood when he did. "I am."
Vash stared at the horizon, searching for any movement besides the waves of heat amidst the orange and reds of the sunset.
Nothing. No trace of that motorcycle. No trace of Livio.
He was supposed to be back by this point, food and drinkable water now past too low for comfort. He'd already given up his portions so the kids could eat, he'd be fine without them. It upset Wolfwood, but he kept quiet cause he'd already done the same. Vash softly smiled to himself.
He took a deep breath, trying to relax a bit as the sounds of the radio echoed down from the orphanage to where he sat on the cliff. Ms. Melanie had put it on as a way to distract the kids, keep them smiling as things were dwindling. He was surely appreciating it, closing his eyes as a slight breeze made the strands of hair sway a bit.
"Got any room?" He looked up to see Wolfwood standing there, his smile growing as he felt an ease in his chest. Wolfwood sat down next to him, Vash's eyes lingering on the way the sunset was framing his silhouette.
"Nothing yet?"
"No," he looked back at the horizon, "I'm beginning to worry something happened."
"Livio's gonna be fine, he's tough like me."
"Yeah but them," he looked back towards the orphanage, an uneasy air settling as they heard the slight murmurs of kids.
"We've got enough for two or three more days. If he's a no show, I'll go over to the next town and see if there's anything there."
Vash's head turned to him quickly, "you can't leave."
"You can't drive Needle Noggin, and I can't leave if the kids are alone."
Vash felt a catch in his throat as a guilt made him look away, right. That was selfish of me, what was I thinking.
"How long would that take?"
Wolfwood sighed, "longer than I'd like." The silence returned, the only sounds being the music and the slight clinks of Vash's left hand as he opened and closed it. The next song began, Vash perking up at the light guitar arrangement.
Wolfwood raised a brow, "you know this one?"
Vash smiled, "yeah, it's one of my favorites."
"Of course it is," he smirked, "old man."
Vash turned to him, "it's a good song!"
"Yeah, that old people like."
He groaned, "don't remind me." He began to tap his finger along to the beat as the singer began. Every second of the song was practically etched into his brain at this point, a hum that he couldn't help coming from him as the familiar story of love began to be sung. As each word came to mind, his heart began to beat in a way it hadn't before for this song.
"So, you're big into love songs like this?" Vash looked over at Wolfwood, his heart beating harder under the soft gaze behind the sunglasses.
"Um, no, I just enjoy the sound usually." Wolfwood nodded, looking to the side as Vash's ears felt warm. It was true, usually it was less the subject of the song and more the sound that got him. This time though, as the singer described their encounter, his mind began to drift to the man beside him. The words never had this weight before.
He took a deep breath, his eyes tracing the horizon before the slight touch of fingertips made his heart lurch so hard he thought he'd choke. He looked over at Wolfwood who was still staring off to the side, a light trail of smoke showing he'd lit another cigarette.
And a slight pink hue in his ears as his fingertips slightly slid against Vash's. A smile spread across his face as he tried not to let out a laugh at their collective nervousness despite the past few nights of discreet meetings outside the orphanage. His fingers slid forward, quickly turning Wolfwood's hand over so he could interlock them. The motion made him turn to look at Vash wide eyed, the pink deepening in his ears and spreading to his cheeks. His own face felt warm as well, the warmth in his chest on the verge of making it burst.
A smile began to pull at Wolfwood's lips as he quickly glanced at Vash's own, the slight dimple he'd grown oh so familiar with making him swoon again.
The music began to swell as he moved closer, Wolfwood growing more and more entranced and sending Vash's heart soaring. He took the cigarette from his mouth holding it between his prosthetic fingers as their lips met.
Somehow, every kiss was better than the last. The tenderness Wolfwood had, the slight tickle of his breath, the way their noses brushed against each other, that overwhelming wave of emotion that came over him at just how alive he was. It was addicting. He pulled him in closer by the waist as Wolfwood's hand ran through his undercut, chills going across his skin at the sensation, making him kiss deeper.
If only they could stay here longer, if only Livio…
The sounds of the kids above them caught their attention as they pulled away, a brick of guilt settling in Vash's heart at the thought that briefly flashed through his mind.
Wolfwood looked up at the orphanage, "almost forgot, if one of them steps out the secret is out." He laughed a bit, stopping as Vash let go and looked away.
He felt that weight on his shoulders again as he looked back at the horizon, those selfish thoughts almost mocking him as his very identity loomed over. Ms. Melanie began to call for dinner, the reminder of the situation making that brick sink deeper and deeper within him.
"Blondie?" The sudden, gentle touch of Wolfwood's hand against his cheek pulled him from his thoughts, his heart melting at his gaze, "how about later, huh?"
Somehow, he knew Wolfwood could tell what he was thinking, that intense warmth permeating in his heart at him all over again. He smiled weakly back at him, leaning into the touch to keep away the cry in his heart, "right. Later."

The jury's out on whether or not it's good practice to answer calls from unknown numbers in the middle of the night. It's not something Nicholas D. Wolfwood makes a habit of, himself. Just this once, though, it may be worth every second of lost sleep.
_____
The second of my snack sized fics for @vashwoodweek 2026! This is for the Day 4 prompt "Reincarnation AU".
also on ao3
It was one thing to be woken up by his alarm.
It was another entirely to be woken up by the sound of his ringtone going off, insistently. It wasn't something that Nicholas D. Wolfwood usually heard, because he usually didn't have sound on. Only at night, and just in case something happened to his brother and he needed him. That had never happened.
Until now, Nicholas thought, snatching up his phone from where it was perched, merrily buzzing its way towards the edge of his nightstand with every note of the ringtone. He didn't even know what that was, some factory default setting? Either way, when he yanked the phone towards himself, the charging cable popping out, he expected to see Livio's name and photo.
Instead, he saw UNKNOWN NUMBER.
Of course.
The one time his phone went off at night, and it wasn't anything that was actually worth dragging him out of a dead sleep. No, it was some scam call, probably someone about to tell him that he'd dodged his tax payments for too long, or maybe that an unauthorized purchase had been made on his credit card to the tune of three grand. Even better, maybe that viruses had been detected on the computer he didn't even own. That one was always fun.
As Nicholas glared at the screen, imagining what he might say if that was what was waiting for him on the other end of the line, it went dark, before fading into his lock screen, a little missed call notification appearing.
Waiting another few breaths, just to see if it rang again, Nicholas dropped the phone, face down, before doing the same with himself, pressing his face into his pillow.
He needed to get back to sleep.
No sooner had he thought that then, again, the phone went off, the vibration of the ring rumbling through the mattress next to his hand.
Snatching it up, Nicholas swiped the call button and put the phone up to his ear.
"What?"
"Oh. Oh, you picked up."
That… Was not what Nicholas had been expecting to hear.
"Sorry, who is this?" he asked, shifting into a sitting position. The light from the street was coming through the slats in his window blinds, drawing lines across his bedsheets as he stared at the opposite wall. On the other end of the line, he could hear what sounded like traffic whizzing by at high speeds, and a sharp, shaky breath.
"Does the name Vash mean anything to you?"
The way that was worded should have made Nicholas leery. No one called, didn't introduce themselves, and then went on asking if certain things meant anything to the person they were calling. It might not have been a scam call, exactly, but it could have been a trap. Something meant to get him to give over personal information. Read out his credit card number. Recite his social security. Start giving away the answers to all those little questions the bank made you set up to prove that you really were you.
If that had been the goal, asking if the name Livio had meant something to him might've worked better. Or Melanie. Not some name he'd never even heard.
Except for the fact that when that name came down the line, quiet and a little shaky, something in Nicholas' stomach twisted. His chest felt tight, his pulse picking up unexpectedly.
Did it?
"Who. Is. This?"
"I…"
Silence, except for the sounds of what had to be a highway. Breathing. The shuffle of the receiver from one hand to another.
"You need to start talking, or I'm hanging up."
"Don't hang up!"
He should have.
He really should have.
Instead, though, Nicholas did what the caller asked of him. Sitting up, he reached over to flick on the lamp at his bedside, staring hard at the opposite wall when he spoke.
"You've got sixty seconds to convince me."
"Okay." Another shaky, careful inhale of breath, and Nicholas found himself pressing the phone harder against his ear. Listening as the caller breathed out again, the soft sound of lips being wet before he spoke again. "I'm Vash."
"I sort of figured."
There was a soft laugh before, "of course you did. You were always sharp, I knew you'd put that together."
Those words prodded at something in the back of his mind, and for a second, Nicholas felt like he was being pushed. Like something in his past was trying to rise up and get his attention by shoving him forward off a mental brink.
It didn't happen, but the feeling lingered.
Like a threat.
"So, why are you calling me in the middle of the night, Vash?"
"God," Vash said, quietly, and if Nicholas wasn't being totally off base, he would have thought he sounded like he might cry. There was another sound, a kind of muffled hum that sounded like a plea for being given a moment.
The sixty seconds had already passed. Nicholas wasn't hanging up.
"Do you believe in past lives?"
Of all the things that Nicholas has expected someone to ask him when they called him up in the middle of the night, that wasn't one of them. Asking if he had a way to get to a hospital, asking if he was all right taking a phone call from someone in prison, all right. It wouldn't have been ideal, far from it, but those were the sorts of questions he thought he'd be asked when he was woken from a deep sleep - the first in days, mind - by an unknown caller.
Not whether or not he believed in past lives.
Maybe the more jarring thing was, though he'd not said it out loud since he was a kid, Nicholas did. In one way or another, at least.
It had been around the time that Livio was brought to the orphanage. He'd been small, quiet, a real crybaby, not joining in with the other kids because he was, clearly, still dealing with trauma from what had happened to his parents.
Nicholas understood that, now. The adults caring for them did their best, but with so many orphans, there was only so much time to go around. Livio had been left to his own devices when he wasn't in a counselling session.
And it was his hiding away in a corner of the yard to cry that had drawn Nicholas' attention. Made him feel like someone needed to try and be Livio's friend, because he clearly needed one.
That, and, like Nicholas has blurted out, easy as you please, weeks later, he'd felt like he knew Livio. Like they were supposed to be brothers or something.
So, yeah.
Nicholas D. Wolfwood may not have said it out loud. He might not have broadcast it. But, like all kinds of other quiet beliefs people could harbour away, he did believe in past lives.
"Sure," Nicholas answered, reaching for the pack of his smokes sitting on the nightstand. He perched one between his lips, raising his lighter to the end while he spoke around it. "Why not? You?"
Instead of answering that question, Vash asked, "you're smoking?"
Pausing, Nicholas took the cigarette from his lips. When he spoke, smoke curled up from the corners of his mouth. "Yeah. Problem?"
"Not at all. That's just like you."
What was this guy's deal?
"If you're about to tell me that we were family in a past life —"
"—not exactly family," Vash cut in, and then, before Nicholas could ask 'then what?' he barrelled on. For someone who had seemed so careful and frugal with their words before, now he was going a mile a minute.
"But like that. We met on a bus. You were wandering in the desert, and I saw you. We were friends after that. Well, maybe after the shooting competition. You remember that? You signed me up without my permission. So I did it back." Vash laughed, "and we ended up facing off. After that, we ran into each other now and again. You… found me. When I needed someone the most. Reminded me who I was."
"Stop."
Nicholas hadn't expected the word to come out of his mouth, but it had slipped before he could stop it.
Memories were playing out. His eyes were open, staring at his bedroom wall, but he wasn't seeing it.
He was seeing endless sand, instead. Huge bulbs with otherworldly beings in them. A cross. A destroyed spaceship in the sky. A red coat.
The humanoid typhoon.
"Wolfwood…" Vash coaxed. "Give it a second. You do remember, don’t you?"
Stone houses cut into cliff sides. Gigantic monsters, worms, and the cross was a gun. His gun.
Full of mercy.
"I lost you."
A small town. A tall, slender man who, even in this memory that was his and still not his, made him feel ill to remember. Blood on the floor of the chapel.
The Stampede.
"I thought I might never find you again. You weren't in my last life. Not that I found."
Nicholas' cigarette had burned dangerously, a finger of ash dangling like a threat from the end. Without ceremony, he stubbed the whole thing out in the ashtray before he threw back the sheets.
"Where are you?"
"I, um. There's a gas station, out on the highway. It has a pay phone. Can you believe that? If I got it wrong, though, I didn't want to be tracked by my phone…"
"North or south?" Standing up, Nicholas trapped his phone between his ear and his shoulder, pulling on the same pants he'd been wearing earlier.
"Uh…" Vash paused, and the sound of movement and shuffling feet came through the receiver. Suddenly the sounds of traffic made sense. His instinct had been right.
"South."
"I'm coming to find you, Vash." It wasn't a statement that left itself open to discussion. He was remembering, now. Another whole life by this man's side. Something he'd wanted to spend more time on.
This was their chance for that. It had to be.
"I remember you. Needle-noggin."
"Okay," Vash answered, and Nicholas could hear the smile in his voice. He could see it in his mind. "I'll be waiting."
He sucked the air through his teeth as he pulled himself up against the sleeping Tomas, his eyes squeezed shut from the sharp pains throughout his body. Vash had just barely made it out of this town with his life, they were a tough group of folks though. Bandits struggle to even get out the door with goods before getting pummeled, a rare bit of good.
For Vash, it had meant a rough goodbye.
He slipped his jacket off slowly, groaning from the pain in his left shoulder. How am I gonna get this shirt off now? He deeply breathed to steady himself. He ran out of extras three bullets ago so no option to cut the thing off. He'd just have to bear it.
His head was still spinning a bit from the jacket, resting it against the back of the Tomas as he looked up at the stars with one eye. He gently ran his fingertips along the other swollen one, a slight ache beneath them. That kid had quite the swing, aha. Imagine what it would've been like if they had actually gotten to play that game of ball like he promised?
That familiar ache began to work his way through his chest as it always did. A good enough distraction from the various growing bruises along his body. He began taking out his bandages and supplies, he had to work fast before he'd pass out from the pain after the shirt was off.
"Get the hell out!"
"You bastard!"
"It's all your fault!"
That's right. It was. It always is. The bar that girl had been saving up for getting destroyed, that family's home being leveled, that kid's leg getting messed up, it was all him. Always him. He should have never been there. Or anywhere.
Now he couldn't tell whether he wanted to feel the sharp pain in his shoulder or the threat of his chest caving in. He took a deep breath, lifting the hem of his shirt as he clenched his jaw. As his arms raised, it was as if someone was digging their fingers into the wound in his shoulder, the pain making cold sweat begin to run down his face.
He threw the shirt to the side, grabbing the equipment with his right arm quickly and pushing through the growing sharp pains and dizziness as he dug the bullet out, tossing it to the side and quickly putting pressure on it with gauze. As he wrapped his shoulder, head spinning, he saw the itinerary of pain he'd have to push through tomorrow, various areas of red and purple along his torso. Even a couple of cuts.
He finished, letting out a deep exhale as he laid down on the still warm sand, the memory of a warm bed pushing through his mind. The pain in his shoulder still wasn't enough.
He curled up pressing against the bruises as he felt his mind begin to slip quickly.
I'm sorry everyone.
~
"I'm fine."
"You know I don't listen to that anymore."
Vash chuckled, "it's just a cut."
Wolfwood shot him a glare as he held his finger in place, wiping off the area with a warm washcloth, "it's just a cut until you get something in it and next thing you know you're walking around with a lovely infection."
"I haven't gotten one before."
"Bullshit." It had happened during dinner prep, just a cut from a knife that missed, nothing big. Yet the moment Wolfwood saw it right before they were going to bed, he started getting on Vash about it. At that point he'd completely forgotten about it himself. He'd had plenty of cuts before, deep and shallow, they never needed a bandage in the end. It would've been a waste.
"There," Wolfwood finished putting the bandage on, looking back at Vash with his brow furrowed, "don't do that again."
"So no kiss to make it better?" Wolfwood picked Vash's hand up, gently kissing where the bandage was. His face went red hot as his stomach flipped.
Wolfwood laughed, "you asked."
Vash covered his face, "I was joking." His hands were removed as Wolfwood kissed his cheek with a smile before pulling him down into the bed.
He let out a large yawn, "man I'm tired." He pulled Vash close against himself with one arm as the other grabbed the sheets, "night Blondie."
He softly smiled, nuzzling himself against Wolfwood's heartbeat as he stared at the bandage on his finger, that familiar warmth spreading through his chest.
"Goodnight Wolfwood." As it always did.
