Emptiness 1 (1-failed) / intaglio on nice paper
emptiness #1
Year of the Cope (study) / Morgan Motes / Screenprint, india ink and litho ink on printers paper / 9″ X 12″ / July 2020
All the work that I’ve done in this class has had to do with the current state of the world -- the omnipresent sadness of 2020, the bad governments, the murder, the pandemic. There is a palpable dread, an alienation from everyone and everything that we can all feel. Coping is the condition of 2020, the staying condition of a lot of those around me. I wanted to pair this text with images evoking nostalgia, what has came and went, forgotten landscapes, close water, what we inspect when there is nothing else to.
These pieces were painted with india ink first, and then printed over with litho ink.

World 1-12 / oil, india ink and relief ink / 12″X18″
In this series, I was trying to approach the feeling of landscape in a visually and literally minimal way. I made the "No/On" and "World" stencils, along with one other stencil (designed like tree bark) with plastic, and in the assigned way. These stencils were necessary for getting the point across, actually saying "world". The other "stencils" were hand ripped paper that I'd lay across the inked gelatin, and then press. The torn paper is what makes up the moons, lakes, and landscape.
I feel that this work is, of course, attached to the time that it was made. I think that there is something significant in the almost primitive way that this work was approached (besides the fact that it was made this way because I can't get into the real studio -- If I could, this work would not have been made at all). In Coronavirus-world, I feel that my brain has become more primal (or dumb). With reduced responsibilities, I feel that I'm thinking to either: eat, sleep, drink wine, play video games, hopefully sketch. I've become more aware of my fight or flight instincts when walking around Walmart, hearing someone cough.

Tile Repeat (clouds) / acrylic, styrofoam on paper / 4″ squares (16)
Terrible World 1-4 / Styrofoam, block prints and stamps, ink and oil / 12″ X 18″
Footnote To Ghost Dog 1-4 / oil and ink prints on paper / 12″ X 18″
In my tessallation prints, “Footnote To Ghost Dog (1-4),” I’m playing with an accumulation of references and influences throughout all of my work, be it poetry, sketchbook or journal writing, paintings, what have you. The Ghost Dog, as a symbol, exist throughout the past year of my work. It was at first a head nod, a dip of respect and love to my recently dead dog. Bandit (my dog) would pop up throughout my sketchbooks or poetry and would just kind of live, be a reminder of death and life, a motif just for me, nothing serious.
Last March I was working on a poem by the name of “In-between Home Shapes;” it was a poem about how in my mid-twenties, a space in-between any kind of permanence, far from “figuring it out,” I feel transient, in-between no places that feel like home. In the poem I reference a Francis Bacon painting, a study he’d done of a photo Muybridge had taken of a dog in motion. In the painting the dog looks a bit ghostly, transient, at a place in-between places. In the poem I call it “a ghost-dog-thing.” This poem ended up becoming the titular poem of a chapbook I was working on, and since then, this poem has informed every poem I’ve written since. It was a turning point for me and my writing, and it so happened to be about a ghost-dog-thing. This print is simply a personal reflection of the accounts of Ghost Dogs throughout my work. The print was made on printer’s paper with ink, oil, watercolor and styrofoam stamps. In the image the stamp is imitating a ghosting, and back and fourth through solidity and not, being and not being. The palette is picked to evoke rust, something old and still aging.
Paper dyed with dead flowers and rust.
Black Water Revealed Through Some Inability (WIP) / oil on canvas / 4′ X 5′
--------
This (unfinished) oil painting has been made fully (kind of, it was painted over a previous unsuccessful painting) since the arrival of the dumb and punishing Coronavirus. This piece is part of a series that focuses on the almost ancient feeling of being alone with nature, and how this feeling has developed into some nostalgic reminder of awayness. My current work explores nature as a kind of negative space, nature exist today as the spaces in-between.
This isolation shared with nature, that I thought was interesting, has become malformed and weird to me in Coronavirus-world. This piece is me looking at nature from a distance, while the whole world weeps with social-chaos, bad governments, and pandemics. This piece is made of layers of oil paint, both thick and thin. Some areas are worked slowly with nice mediums, liquin, stand oil, etc. Some areas are more free-flowing and are handled quickly and intuitively with gamsol and turpentine. This painting is a work in progress, and will eventually, hopefully, resolve itself.
