you ask a boy to be your friends on the swings because he’s alone. you fall in love with magic together. as you grow up you get 2 more best friends but he still always looks to you first. they whisper about him around town and kids are mean to him and you don’t really understand why but you swear to always protect him. when you’re 12 he goes missing and you feel like you’re the only one who really cares. magic was real all along but it took him from you. you watch his lifeless body get pulled out of a lake and you insist it’s not him because it just can’t, it can’t be. you look at his drawings that you keep in a binder and try to hold it together. you go to his funeral. he lives and when you visit him in the hospital you put your head on his chest so you can hear his heartbeat. a year later and he’s acting weird and you notice before everyone else. you pull him out of visions and bring him “home” and it’s the basement you’ve been playing games in your whole life. you barge into his house and sleep at his bedside. he gets possessed and the only part of him that isn’t is the hand you held. then you grow up and things get messy and hormonal and you’re mean and angry and you don’t know how to manage your relationships and you hurt people because of it. 4 years later and you watch him unlock the powers you believed he had all along and use them to save you. you don’t know that he thought about that very first day on the swings while he did it.

i feel like an often overlooked downside to 10-episode seasons and the death of the "monster of the week" format is that we get way less whump variety nowadays. used to be that there'd be dozens of opportunities for your fave to get punched or kidnapped or hypnotized or what have you. these days if it doesn't fit into the main plot, it just doesn't happen. this is a tragedy. we should be protesting.
