It was disappointing, to be very honest that his only response to her proffered information was a shake of the head. Isabella didnât think of him as a man of few words, it wasnât the attitude or persona he seemed to embody, it wasnât the way in which he carried himself and yet⌠she could not seem to get a rise from him, could not seem to get a response. It wasnât as if she expected much, some form of acknowledgement, a promise to do something about it, ANYTHING really would have satisfied so long as it had been verbal. But she would take the cards that she was dealt and work with them, there was no other option.
Brows lifted at his initially terse answer, annoyed and appreciative at once. It was cruel, but then, it wasnât really about that, wasnât meant to be in that fashion. Plus, she could appreciate the lack of taunting that is was issued with. There was something nice in the fact that he sincerely didnât care about her â it worked to her advantage in so far as it made him less cruel, less interested in reminding her of her lost wings and how she should be better than she was simply because she had once had them, as if humanity wasnât a thing that was slowly infecting her from the inside out, making things all the more difficult. At the elaboration that followed, she nodded simply, the implied rebuke well received rather than resented. He was right. Lucifer did have bigger problems that managing her, the trick of the thing was she didnât know where that left her, didnât know whether that meant that what she was doing wasnât enough.
His questions provided her an opportunity, she only had to figure out how best to use it and quick. Between the entirely selfish (and insecure) path her thoughts were upon and the knowledge that Adelaide and Abaddon stood so near by, as well as dear Junia meaning that any of them could tune it at just the wrong moment, the idea of divulging what the hell was happening seemed out of the question, an unnecessary risk in the face of something that could not possibly get so out of hand. Surely, those in the tunnels would be noticed and caught soon enough. So instead, she simply shrugged, playing for nonchalance even though it was honestly far too late for such a thing, as she prepared to let a a half-lie spill from her tongue. âI was simply wondering if it was enough.â
She didnât seem pleased with him, Daniel could tell that much. Likely wanted more of an answer. But the truth was, he didnât have one. Lucifer liked to ramble, liked to show his hand, but only when he wanted. Only when he deemed it advantageous. And he had been honest as much as he had been mocking -- there were larger issues at hand. Lucifer hadnât had time to lay out all the cogs of his plan.
Should Daniel ask, he was sure the Lord would be able to lay out a full scope of expectancy for this little spy. Whether he chose to share it was another issue entirely. While Daniel had much less invested in the answer, he had the same question as Isabella. He knew nothing of what Lucifer thought of him, his work. He knew he was seen as capable -- he still had his job, after all, and he had been called to the Hub of all of it, to Paradise.Â
Wondering if it was enough. Such imprecise language. He rolled his eyes and let himself look back to the other exchange happening. Still bickering with the human. Asmodeus seemed to be growing impatient with the carrying-on, at least. âDo you mean if you are enough?â Daniel corrected, crossing his arms. Little girls and their need for acceptance, for approval. Daniel was going to go mad from it.Â
Huffing out a short breath, Danielâs cold eyes found hers. âI donât know. I donât know how many gold stars Lucifer has given you on the chart in his office. I donât know what heâd like for you to do, or not do. I imagine if you havenât gotten a change in orders, then youâre doing fine.â He spoke in a low rush, head ducking low so that the words stayed between just he and Isabella.
And then, a look to the human and the angel. Back to Isabella, "Is that something I should be concerned with?"
