So, what we knew about doppelgängers pre season five was that they were created by nature as a way to right the wrongs, the wrong in this case being Esther using Tatia’s blood to create vampires, which goes against nature’s laws. So a doppelgänger would be born every 500 years so someone who knew about the doppelgänger thing could try to set things straight by eliminating vampires from their existence (something Esther tried to do in season three, if I remember correctly). It’s a plotline that has flaws, but overall it makes sense. The biggest flaw I can come up with was the 500 years thing: in 1492, Katherine was about 17 years old, whereas Elena was born around 1992 (give or take a few years) so she was born more than 500 years later than Katherine. But that’s the only thing that’s actually a pretty big plothole and it’s not something that actually affected the plot so I’m willing to overlook it.

But then along came CD and JP, combining their tremendous lack of talent and transforming the show into The DE Diaries, so suddenly everything had to become about DE and everything had to become an obstacle for them to overcome except not really because a real obstacle would be too huge for them to overcome, so everything they came up with was half-assed to make sure DE could “beat” it. Here are my biggest issues with the doppelgänger prophecy as it was introduced in season five (in no particular order):

- In season one, they made Katherine and Elena being related into a really big deal but in season five, they introduced Nadia (which was like so pointless) and made Nadia have all of these mommy issues about Katherine abandoning her. Except that if Katherine and Elena are supposed to be related, Nadia would have had to have a child as well, which she then abandoned to become a vampire and chase after Katherine. That would make Nadia a gigantic hypocrite.

- Klaus is more than a thousand years old. Are they seriously expecting me to believe he ran into three different female doppelgängers, but never knew Stefan was supposedly a doppelgänger as well? Especially considering the doppelgängers were supposed to be drawn together?

- If a doppelgänger was supposed to appear every 500 years as an attempt to restore nature’s balance, and Amara was the first one 2000 years ago, that means a total of four doppelgängers could have existed: one 1500 years ago we never met, then Tatia, then Katherine, then Elena. That would be four times Tessa could’ve witnessed “the doppelgängers falling in love, conquering all” which would make her saying “century after century, I watched versions of Stefan and Elena find each other like magnets, always the same story” kind of… ridiculous, lol. Because watching it happen four times in 2000 years is hardly torture, especially considering Tatia was torn between two brothers, neither of which were a male doppelgänger, and killed by them, Katherine never even met her doppelgänger as a human and she and Stefan didn’t exactly conquer all, and Elena and Stefan were broken up by the time Tessa was introduced, that just leaves us with one possible love story, that of the doppelgänger who was never introduced to us.

- The sole reason why Klaus hunted Katherine down for 500 years (and don’t get me started on how he couldn’t find her for 500 years when Elena and Rebekah tracked her down in a matter of days) was because she made the ritual impossible by becoming a vampire, the whole point of a doppelgänger was that she had to be human. Yet the Travelers didn’t have any problem using Stefan and Elena’s vampire blood in season five.

- If he doppelgängers were supposed to be born 500 years apart and find each other like magnets, it would make sense that they would be born within a few years from each other. Yet, like I mentioned before, Tatia didn’t find her doppelgänger even though she had already been married (I believe so? I never watched that TO episode but I think she was married and her husband died or something? It could be that her husband was the doppelgänger but if he was then why did he die at such a young age? That’s not a love story Tessa’d be better about). If the doppelgängers were supposed to have this magical recreation of Silas and Amara’s love story then wouldn’t you think she’d live a long and happy life married to her version of Silas? But that’s not what happened. And then Katherine was born and she had a child out of wedlock so again, it’s entirely possible that the father of that child was her doppelgänger but than a. again that’s nothing to be jealous of since she was banished from her family with her child ripped from her arms and the father was not around and b. she would’ve recognized Stefan when she saw him but she didn’t so it’s safe to assume she never met her doppelgänger when she was human. And then Stefan was randomly born around 1848 and he just happened to be there when Katherine passed him by in her carriage except how did nature know Katherine’d become a vampire and survive for so long and why was Stefan born in the USA and not in England where Katherine resided? Like that seems like an awful lot of coincidence when this spell was supposed to be so crafty and the universe was supposed to be so hellbent on bringing the doppelgängers together. And last but not least, Elena and Tom Avery were born around the same time but they literally never even met, so… yeah.

Nina Dobrev said it best: “With Stefan, whenever he’s around she’s just—it’s almost like she melts into his arms and she feels somewhat relieved.”

And you can literally see that she can breathe again when she sees him. And Stefan, ‘who doesn’t hug’, is so happy to embrace her.

And then the last one is actually heartbreaking to me because it’s different, she pulls him in so close and she tilts her head because she knows it’s the last time but she doesn’t wanna let go.

Damon is a man who tells a woman that she cannot make her own decisions, he is a man that rapes women, he is a man that takes away their free will, he is a man who threatens physical violence on women, he is a man who harasses women, he is a man who harasses women while they are in a happy and loving relationship with someone else, he is a man who threatens/harms the supposed “love of his life’s” loved ones, he is a man who blames his significant other and others for his actions and refuses to take responsibility for his actions. He is also a man who believes that all of his horrible abuse is the result of a woman not returning his feelings.

PEOPLE, THIS IS ABUSE!!!!

It’s abuse, doesn’t matter if they are fictional characters in a show about vampires. It doesn’t matter how fictional the show is. There are people out there who believe that a man like Damon is the perfect man and that is scary, and I pray that these people never ever fall into a toxic and abusive relationship with a man, or woman, like this.

I cannot believe Julie and Kevin showed people all over the world that this abusive asshole is someone who deserved to get a happy ending without any consequences for his actions. I cannot believe that Julie, a woman who is so against Donald Trump, allowed Damon Salvatore, an abusive man, to never once be held accountable for his actions.
