The Secret in the Diner

Disclaimer: English is not my native language, so I apologize in advance for any grammar and/or spelling mistakes. The main love interest has a name, but I try not to be too descriptive. Thank you!
The chilly winds welcomed Joan with caresses on her flushed face as she strolled to her favorite diner on a quiet and late morning. What an agonizingly long morning! The dreadful crows of her roosters woke her from her deep slumber. Her house cats, who scratched her bedroom door, collided with the loud squeaks and playful nature of her little piglets outside her room. This morning was rougher than usual. The only thing pushing her through was her morning prayer. She prayed for a break from her mundane, soul-sucking life. In a rare turn of events, her neighbor offered to look after her animals for a day. After years of being trapped in her barn, she felt blessed by her neighborâs offer. There is so much freedom, yet so little time. So little that she didnât bother to change her disheveled clothes as she traveled deep into the city, away from her lonesome little town.
As Joan entered the diner, she greeted the friendly waitress, who ran up to Joan, surprised by Joanâs rare visits.
âGood morning, Joan; itâs been a while. I assume business is booming, right?â The waitress asked.
Joan chuckled at the question. âWell, I wouldnât say itâs booming, but itâs doing decent. Same customers and all, maâam,â Joan said as her southern accent blossomed.
âMaâam? Oh, please. You make me sound like Iâm your grandmother. Just call me by my name,â the waitress said.
âSorry, maâam.â Joan snickered as she heard the waitress groan.
During their conversation, Joan couldnât help but let her eyes roam around the diner. Architecture-wise, everything had remained unchanged since her last visit. The same old, yet beautiful, paintings of previous owners adorn the walls. The sound of jazz music from the record player was soothing the worries Joan carries in her heart. Itâs the same genre her mother adored listening to and dancing to with Joanâs father. She couldnât help but clutch onto her cross necklace as she looked around.

Warning(s): Slightly suggestive in the beginning
To my one true love,
I waited for your return, night and day, to confess a terrifying secret. Iâm certain you figured out what my secret isâknowing your gifted mind. However, I have to get it out of my system. Iâm sorry; I never confessed while you were still alive. But this is my opportunity, and I wonât let it go to waste.
âElizabeth, itâs been a while,â Louis said before he choked on his saliva. He opened the door to reveal a beautiful woman in a revealing nightgown, resembling close to a porcelain doll. But not just any woman; itâs Elizabeth, his Elizabeth. âI apologize. I shouldâve been more cautious,â Louis stuttered as he covered his eyes and his cheeks produced a hot pink blush.
Elizabeth giggled at his reaction. Despite his involvement with his brothersâ crimes, he still clings to his humanity, and part of his humanity is his innocence. It was captivating to see him diminish into a bashful, stumbling individual.
âIt has been a while, Louis. Youâve changed quite a bit since we last spoke. Iâm happy youâre no longer wearing your spectacles,â Elizabeth said as she crossed her legs and exposed her ankle to her upper thigh.
âWere you not fond of them?â Louis asked.
âMy problem was that they hid your magnificent eyes. Although, they did make you look more serious. I liked it,â Elizabeth said as she caressed the scar on his right cheek.
âIâm flattered, Elizabeth,â Louis said, clearing his throat. âSo, did you need to speak to me about something? When I received your telegram, I rushed over here because I thought it was an emergency,â Louis explained while trying to remain confident. However, it was difficult to concentrate on their conversation when Elizabeth was leaving gentle touches on his sensitive scar.
âIn a sense, this meeting is an emergency. I need something from you, Louis,â Elizabeth said as she stood up from her chair and walked towards him. She cradled his head as her thumbs caressed his cheeks.
âYou know Iâm always here for you, Elizabeth. What do you need?â Louis asked.
Elizabeth embraced Louis as she laid her head on his shoulder. She later pressed her hand against his stomach before slipping up to his chest, as if she were trying to reach his heart. But his heart wasnât enough to exorcise this lonesome feeling Elizabeth kept all these years. She knew, but she needed a distraction. Her head tilted to glance at Louis before she leaned closer to his ear.
âLouis, indulge me. Just tonight or many nights if you enjoyed our time.â Elizabeth whispered. Her hot breath sent shivers down Louisâ spine. âLet our worries and stress go, and be free,â Elizabeth said before kissing his scar. âWould you like that?â
What a tempting offer! To lie in bed with the woman Louis had been eyeing for years. From feeling and tasting her warm and soft skin, to decorating her body with his marks, to smelling her vanilla perfume that once suffocated him but now comforts Louis. And as she said it, letting out their frustrations, and deepened their relationship. His soul can calm hers down. Itâs his chance to express his profound love for Elizabeth.
Alas, he couldnât accept her offer. Elizabethâs heart went away with William.
Her demeanor changed when William disappeared. It was like someone had possessed Elizabeth. Every day, she wore long black dresses with a matching fascinator hat and gloves. Even with the harsh, strong winds or the heaviest rain, her clothes remained the same. Because of her attire, she was easy to spot in a crowd, and Elizabeth became a target for relentless harassment. Rumors spread throughout the country, from Elizabeth being involved with the crimes committed by the Moriarty family to her having an affair with William while knowing he was the Lord of Crime. Because of the speculations, people sent hundreds of letters to her mailbox, with many containing death threats, causing her to be paranoid. Unfortunately, her explanations have fallen on deaf ears. So, she always asked Louis to accompany her wherever she went on the off chance someone would attack her. Her eye bags enlarge, her lively and long hair turned brittle, and her skin turn pale as she copes with the passing of William with cigarettes and alcohol. She resembled more like a living, dead girl.
It wasnât until now that she was back to her old self. Thanks to Louisâ intervention, she developed healthier coping mechanisms. However, her grief never went away, and she had moments of relapse, like right now.
âElizabeth,â Louis said, gently pushing her away. âI am flattered by your offer. But Iâm afraid I must decline. I believe the incident is still haunting you.â
Despite her tainted reputation, she courted other gentlemen. Though some gentlemen offered marriage, Elizabeth was not interested. Instead, she escaped by having multiple one-night stands. So Louis, who was an important figure and friend in her life, rejecting her offer, was a blow to her ego and frail heart. She couldnât help but tear up at his rejection.
âElizabeth, please understand,â Louis said as he kneeled in front of her while holding both of her hands.
âBut youâve fallen for me, no?â Elizabeth asked between sniffles. âSurely you want to do this with me?â
Louis gasped at her comment. He intended to never reveal his feelings until the timing was right. In the three years since the final act, he remained quiet about his romantic attraction to Elizabeth. Especially when she went through a downward spiral. It still isnât. However, he didnât have a choice, she wasnât the same naive little girl. So he finally let his secret out of his chest.
âI must confess, Elizabeth, I love you. Iâve loved you since childhood. Admittedly, it upset me that you longed for my brother. However, you truly brought color into his life. That beautiful smile you showed my brother made me happy. But I never wanted to step in the way of my brotherâs happiness.â
A loud, wet cough echoed as Louis lay on his bed. His health has deteriorated, not with his coughs increasing but with the unsuspecting muscle spasms, an annoying chill despite his battle with the burning fever, and his inability to breathe. Fortunately, someone made a prayer, and an angel appeared. Elizabeth rushed towards his side with a tray full of food, making footsteps that sounded like stomps, not wanting to waste any time to help Louis.
âLou-Lou, everything will be alright. I made you some lunch. Itâs not much, just fish and chips with your afternoon tea and a cup of fruit,â Elizabeth said as she laid the tray on his night table.
Louis blushed at the nickname, but before he could protest, he had another coughing session.
âLou-Lou!â Elizabeth rushed to his side before she lifted him and patted his back. âEverything will be alright. Youâll recover from this illness soon. Iâve been praying for a miracle, and itâs here. Youâre scheduled for surgery soon, and youâll be free,â Elizabeth said as she continued her light patting.
âElizabeth?â Louis called in a groggy voice. âWhy are you here? Arenât you supposed to visit the orphanage with Albert soon?â He asked.
âI am, but I noticed you were running a fever, so I told Albert that I would stay and help take care of you. Itâs alright; the children will understand, and Albert isnât upset,â Elizabeth said as she rubbed his back.
âThank you. Iâm grateful for your support,â Louis said.
âIâll be here for you, Lou-Lou, always,â Elizabeth said. âIf I have your attention, Lou-Lou, thereâs something Iâve been meaning to ask you. I was speaking to William, and I mentioned that youâre more quiet around me. Why is that? Have I done something wrong?â Elizabeth asked as she took the plate of fish and chips. She sat down on a chair near Louisâ bed.
His heart was running a marathon. The sweat pouring down his face was more noticeable. His body felt heavy. At this moment, he would rather drop dead than confess.
âWell, you see, Elizabeth,â Before he could explain, he had another coughing fit.
âNever mind all that nonsense, Lou-Lou. You should rest. Iâm sorry I put you through stress. Please forgive me,â Elizabeth said in a panic. âLet me hand you your tea. Be careful; itâs hot! Oh, let me get you another blanket. Iâll be right back,â Elizabeth said before kissing his forehead without thinking.
As she hurried out of his room, Louis stared at the ceiling and became lost in his train of thought. At the start, he thought of her as a sister figure. Thatâs how he initially rationalized his feelings. A kind-hearted yet naive girl who always looked after him and William. Who also likes to give kisses to him? He always had to remind himself that they were platonic kisses. A rather perky and polite girl, almost to an annoying level. A girl with a big complexion. She comes from a lower class, however; she doesnât resent the noble people. Not even to the Moriarty family, who practically took turns to antagonize her. Instead, she looks at the bright side of things. Even when her body is decorated with black and blue bruises, she maintains the same shining smile. Speaking of which, the sun always brightens her eyes, and when itâs night, she shines brighter than any candle. She was his angel.
It wasnât until he heard Elizabeth scream Williamâs name in joy that his dream bubble popped. William has returned home. Louis slowly gets up from his bed and looks through the window, only to be crushed by the sight of Elizabeth hugging William.
He knew he had zero chances with Elizabeth. He could never bring out the same smile, sparkling eyes, and flushed cheeks as his brother did. Theyâre dedicated to one another; theyâre perfect for each other. But he understood that it was not about him; it was about them.
âAs long as sheâs happy, Iâll be alright,â Louis said as Elizabeth and William walked back inside the mansion.
âMaybe one day Iâd like to court you or spend the night together. But only once you direct your life in the right direction. Youâre still in a vulnerable place, and I donât want to take advantage of you,â Louis said.
Thatâs not what she wantedânot another lecture.
âLouis, Iâm sorry,â she whispered as she kneeled and covered her head. âI donât know what Iâm doing. Iâm so sorry. Please donât leave me. I promise to clean up my act. Please donât leave. You can hate me all you want, but donât go. Itâs bad enough that I hardly see Albert since he is imprisoned. I donât want you to leave me, too.â Elizabeth begged as she clung to his suit.
âElizabeth, I could never hate you. Like I said before, Iâm not saying no because I donât want you. I do, but I want you to desire me. A genuine desire. My heart aches knowing you only desire me because I remind you of William,â Louis said.
She gasped at his last statement. She understood his reasoning. Even if they spend the night together, William will still plague her mind. How exhausting everything was! Even in recovery, she canât forget or forgive William. But more importantly, she was using Louis for some sick pleasure. He was right. Sometimes Elizabeth looks at Louis, and she sees William. The same hair color, similar scarlet eyes, similar mannerismsâeverything. This madness needs to end. She couldâve hurt Louis. No, she was hurting him. Throughout the years, he was essentially her caretaker. He made sure she was safe, eating nutritious meals, and convinced her to stop abusing drugs. He saved her life, yet this is how she thanked him.
âIâm sorry, Louis. Iâve become so selfish. Iâve been a horrible person.â Elizabeth said in between sniffles. âYou essentially gave up your life to take care of me. Look what I succumbed toâa pathetic woman who is still in mourning for someone who would never reciprocate her love. Iâm so sorry.â Her bloodshot eyes, her ghostly skin stained with her makeup mixed with her tears, and her sobbing clouded Louisâ mind. He took out his handkerchief to wipe the makeup off.
âThereâs no need to apologize, Elizabeth. He was my brother. I was in an agonizing mourning period as well. You just needed more time and support than others. And thatâs nothing to be ashamed of.â Then a lightbulb lit up above his head. âI have an idea,â Louis said with much enthusiasm in his voice. âItâs rather simple, but I think it can help.â
By your side, I am comforted by our silence. But it was frightening to know the reason for your silence. Itâs because youâre no longer here with me. But I know when I look up, you are looking down, watching over me. I know Iâve made many mistakes in my life, some ridiculous, some risky. I suppose you were trying to protect me, but I ignored you. I started smoking because it reminded me of you. How ridiculous. But the biggest mistake was falling in love with you, William James Moriarty. Loving you has consumed my life. But I held so much hatred because of the secret life you kept. Sometimes I blame you for the harassment Iâve received because of my association with you. Yet, I held so much hope for your return. However, itâs been three years now, and my patience is running thin. I have to set myself free because this sick love has imprisoned me for too long. Maybe if we met in different circumstances, we wouldâve been married with children. Maybe I couldâve cured that ache in your sensitive heart. Iâm sorry. I must cut my sunflowers to make room for new flowers. Until we meet again, William.
âIs that all you want to say?â Louis asked with a gentle tone after he finished reading her letter.
âThatâs all, yes,â Elizabeth said.
âWell, what would you like to do with this letter?â Louis asked.
There was a pregnant pause before she stared back at Louis, hoping he would give her the answer. But that wonât help. This was something she had to do herself. She took the letter and a match, setting the letter on fire. This moment dumbfounded Louis as she stomped on the burned letter. She took a shaky, deep breath before a small smile appeared.
âThat was ecstatic,â she said before she embraced Louis. âThank you. Iâve never felt this magnificent in a long time. I owe you my life, Lou-Lou.â She said as she glanced at her night table, which had a picture of William and a dead sunflower near the picture.
The once lively sunflower, with petals as soft as Williamâs hands, has a gentle stem that reminds her of Williamâs delicate heart. The color was almost the same shade as Williamâs hair. Her sunshine boy is gone, but she lived through the tragedy, and she is ready to move on.
Â
âI need to organize my room,â she said with a chuckle. âThank you for everything, Lou-Lou.â

âWhat do you want to be when you grow up, Elizabeth?â
âMe? Oh, I donât know if I can get a profession, William.â Elizabeth said as she focused back on her drawing. It was a chilly evening, and both were in Elizabethâs room as they returned from their classes. The homework they received from their last class is a breeze, yet crucial. They have to answer that question and report their answer to their teacher. A simple question, yet Elizabeth didnât have hope for her future.
âWhy is that?â William asked.
Elizabeth ignored his question and continued her drawing.
âIs it because you donât have a clue what you want to study?â William asked, although he noticed the pencil Elizabeth was drawing with was louder. He figured out what the issue was. âOr are you still anxious about what the future may hold?â The pencil snapped.
Elizabeth mockingly chuckled. âWhatâs the point of asking me questions if you know the answer?â
âItâs best to ask someone either way,â William said as he shrugged his shoulders. âSo, youâre afraid of the future?â
âItâs not only that. I mean, what professional field can I study? Iâm nowhere near as intelligent as you or your brothers,â Elizabeth said as she turned her chair around to face him.
âYou are already intelligent, Elizabeth. Quite talented as well.â He added as he pointed towards the drawing of sunflowers. âYou add so much detail and beautiful shading.â
She squealed as she attempted to explain how the drawing was a present for him and Louis, but ended up spewing nonsense.
âIâm flattered by your drawing, and Iâm certain Louis will be, too.â William chuckled softly. âNo worries, Elizabeth. We can all teach you everything you need to become a successful individual. We will continue our reading and writing lessons until youâre at a proficient level. Albert can train you to fight, if you like. Louis can help you with the housework. Weâre here to support you, Elizabeth. Always.â He declared this as he held her hand, squeezing it gently with a warm smile.
âThatâs comforting to hear, William. Thank you. Wait, Louis likes me?â Elizabeth asked in shock.
âOf course he does. Why do you believe he doesnât?â William asked as his eyes widened by her question.
âWell, Louis has been quiet around me. Granted, heâs always been quiet and reserved. However, when Iâm around him, heâs almost silent. I didnât say anything wrong, did I?â
âNo need to worry, Elizabeth. He likes you just as much as I do, maybe more,â William said with a wink.
âMore than you do? What do you mean by that?â Elizabeth asked. Unfortunately, Albert knocked on the door to announce that dinner was ready. âWe can discuss this matter later. Right now, Iâm starving.â Elizabeth said as she gently dragged William down to the dinner table. Before they sat at the table, William pulled her into a hug. In a tight and close embrace, Elizabeth heard his quiet heartbeat and felt his warm skin.
âThank you, Elizabeth.â
âYou are an idiot, William,â Elizabeth said as she held on to her love with all her might. If she wasnât careful, the sun would rise, but with grim, dull lights.
âLiam, take my hand. Everything will be alright. Youâll find another way to repent your sins, and we will do it together,â Sherlock said with much anticipation.
Elizabeth can only pray William takes his friendâs hand. Unfortunately, her prayers went unanswered. Despite the hopeful look in Williamâs eyes, he only stared at his friends as their pleadings increased.
âForgive me, my dear, but this needs to be done,â William said as he took his hidden sword from his coat and slashed Elizabethâs arm. A loud hiss from her lips made William drown in guilt. He hurt her. A promise he has kept to himself since childhood. His hands were now the deepest shade of scarlet red. Despite the sharp pain, she never loosened her grip on him. The cut can heal, even if it develops into a scar â anything to prevent the death of her precious sunshine boy.
âI admire your strength, Elizabeth, but Iâm not worthy of your tears. I must repent for my sins, dear. Please, promise me one thing, Elizabeth. Find happiness with someone else,â William said as he graced her with his smile.
âWhat the devil are you talking about, William?â She asked as she took everything to not tear up.
William chuckled. He knew; he always knew. She loved him, and he loved her. Despite reciprocating her feelings, it wasnât the right thing to do. His plan for starting a revolution always ends with him dying. He canât give her the life she deserves. They wasnât meant to be. He would never provide for them, as he would burden them both with his title as the Lord of Crime. A plague on the Moriarty family.
âPromise me you will grow old with someone who will love you. For your gentle heart, for your intelligence and your love of learning, and for your empathy. Do whatever brings you the most joy. Have a beautiful wedding, surrounded by your loved ones. Have as many beautiful and adorable children as you want. Go to university like you always wanted. Become a successful woman. Away from the simple, everyday household chores, and welcome exciting opportunities. Whatever you want, you deserve happiness, my dear. You are an angel, Elizabeth, and I am forever grateful. Goodbye.â William said his farewell with a bright smile before letting go of Elizabethâs hand.
In a panic, she leans forward to grab his arm with both of Elizabethâs hands. Her worries faded away as she felt Sherlockâs arms wrapped around Elizabethâs waist, making them stay in place. Despite their differences, Sherlock and Elizabeth share a mutual respect for one another. For Elizabeth, it was his intelligence and humorous wits. For Sherlock, it was her kindness and hard-working attitude. Mere differences settled aside to save William. This is their last chance.
âDonât say such words, William. Do you think I will be happy with some other gentleman? You make me laugh,â Elizabeth said mockingly as her tears dripped down his face, surprising William as he faced a new side of Elizabeth. âYou are foolish if you believe I will be happy with another man. My heart skips only for you. William, you have blessed me with your mere existence, and youâre just going to throw away everything weâve been through? William, you will never be alone hereâyour brothers, your little organization, and me. Weâre all guilty. We all have blood on our hands. If you feel guilty, then please live. Live, and we can repent. I will be by your side, no matter what happens. Please live; I canât hold on much longer,â Elizabeth begged as her cheeks stained a fiery red blush and her tears dripped down and hit Williamsâs face and hair. Time was running out.
Her words blessed Williamâs heart. However, it wonât be fair to her. Even if William is safe, the awful guilt of his crimes will haunt him and Elizabeth. If he wanted to caress her soft cheeks, heâd stain them with his victimâs blood, no matter how many times he washed his hands. He ruined her innocence and her purity. His guilt would worsen as he witnessed Elizabethâs blood staining her dress at an alarming time. Her tears, her blood, and the frightened expression on her face. It was all too much for him.
âIâm sorry, Elizabeth.â The sound of a large bell ringing blurred his soft whisper. And he slipped away.
As she watched William fall from the bridge, her heart stung. She failed him; she failed William. She couldnât do anything but watch him fall into what her clouded mind sawâthe fiery pits of hell. Adding insult to injury, William smiled back at her and his dear friend, Sherlock.
âWilliam,â Elizabeth whimpered.
âAs if that would stop me!â Sherlock said this before jumping off the bridge to catch William. The sight of Sherlock falling left Elizabeth breathless. How can a man have the courage to jump after William despite the fatal end of their fall? How did he jump without any hesitation? Was she not good enough for him?
As they both fell, she felt her soul ripped off of her body. The cold shivered as the sun rose, and the bile built up in her throat. She cried for Sherlock; she sobbed for William until she screamed Williamâs name. Her scream penetrated the ears of millions and echoed across the country. Rumors spread that the Queen heard Elizabethâs scream as well. The Lord of Crime is gone; her sunshine boy is dead.
Time skip
If William broke his promise, then Elizabeth was a hypocrite for calling him out. Itâs been three years since the disappearance of William and Sherlock. Itâs safe to assume they both perished and their bodies were lost. Or perhaps they ran away. Elizabeth wasnât sure which one was worse. In the years since their disappearance, vast changes have occurred for everyone, especially Elizabeth. The most important thing was her relationship with another man. She tried to find someone else, but every date she attended felt sour. However, being pressured by society to get married made her conflicted. On the one hand, she doesnât want society to pressure her into an arranged marriage. On the other hand, sheâs already the victim of harassment thanks to her affiliation with the Lord of Crime, despite the court finding her innocent. She supposes that finding a husband will inspire the public to leave her alone. Or maybe thatâs her naivety shining through. Either way, she wants to settle down and have a simple life again. She needs something to take her mind off of William once and for all.
Some say that people can hear Elizabethâs shouts and cries on every anniversary of Williamâs passing all across the country. As if her tortured and lonesome soul haunted the people the night of his death, still looking for William.
However, tonight was the night Elizabeth would break the hidden promise she made that night. As she put on her make-up, she heard a light knock on her bedroom door.
âThe door is open, Louis.â She said this as she fixed her nightgown and make-up and waited for Louis to enter her bedroom.

If only she had stopped him. If she did, William wouldnât have perished with his friend at the bottom of the bridge. Maybe if she were intelligent enough to figure out his plan. Was she not enough for him to stay alive?
Tonight was the night of the ultimate act. Despite her many protests before, Elizabeth accepted that her love wanted to die.
Oh, such precious memories between the two. Elizabeth was a small child when she met the infamous William James Moriarty. She visited her friend, Albert, around the time Albertâs father wanted to adopt a child. Such a horrid familyâan unfortunate circumstance Albert was living in. Elizabeth was not aware of his familyâs hatred of the lower class until she visited Albertâs manor for the first time. The glares, the snide comments during dinnerâthey even poked fun at her ripped clothing. However, Albert was different. Overwhelmed with compassion for the oppressed and the kindness of Elizabeth, he eagerly offered her a job, forging an unbreakable connection.
Knowing her gentle nature and heart, Albert invited Elizabeth to visit the orphanage he attends. Though she hesitated at first, but once she started attending, she never wanted to leave. She loved the enthusiasm of children and their love of learning. The staff was sweet. She met some nuns that occasionally visited the orphanage, which Elizabeth considers the highlight of her visits. However, one day, Albert had fallen ill. Despite her shy demeanor, she wanted to visit the children and help the staff like always. In a way, they are her second family. It wouldnât take long before she entered the orphanage and greeted the children, who were surrounding the new boys in the orphanage. It was if Cupid aimed at her the moment she glanced towards the bench, surrounded by small children, and saw him. A young child with sunflower hair and scarlet eyes is reading to the orphans. The pale, soft-looking skin and long lashes. Who wouldâve thought that he would be the one to destroy her world? It was worse since Albert was the talkative one. As if the devil had hatched his plan, the blonde boy stopped reading as he noticed a young girl watching him from a distance. Elizabeth stopped her breathing the moment their eyes met. She knew he was different; he was special. Dear Lord.
âI donât believe weâve met before. I just moved here a few days ago with my brother. Mind introducing yourself?â The young boy asked with a gentle smile that set her heart and face inflamed.
Elizabeth couldnât take it anymore. Before she responded, she ran back inside the orphanage. Her occupied mind led her to bump into two nuns.
âAh, my deepest apologies, sisters. I wasnât watching where I was going. I didnât hurt you two?â Elizabeth asked in a gentle tone.
âMy dear, thereâs no need to apologize. We understand it was an accident. If you donât mind sharing, why were you running, little missy?â Sister Agatha asked before she giggled.
âOh, well, there is a new child in the orphanage. Itâs the blond boy reading to the other children.â Elizabeth asked as she glanced at him. âWhen he asked me to introduce myself, I panicked, and I ran back inside. Sisters, what is this agonizingly pleasant feeling? My heart is pounding, and itâs hard for me to breathe. I donât understand why, sisters. This has never happened before. It was humiliating.â Elizabeth said as she fidgets with her fingers and bows her head to hide her face.
Sister Jane chuckled at her confession. âOh, my dear. You will understand once youâre older. Once you learn, it will change your life in the most enthralling way. Donât stress about it for too long. Focus on being a child for now. Focus on becoming his friend. He is new here, and his brother is quite ill. The poor boy needs all the support he can get,â Sister Jane explained as she caressed Elizabethâs hair.
Elizabeth lifts her head to look back at the young boy, who stared back at her. Though instead of hiding behind the sisters, Elizabeth waved at him. To his surprise, he didnât scare her away. The blond boy chuckled and waved back, which put Elizabeth at ease. She bows down and thanked the sisters for their time before she takes a deep breath and approaches the boy again. This time, with much success, she charmed her way into his heart and became his first friend.
It was a wonderful first meeting. She learned so much about the boy and his brother in a brief span of time. He was knowledgeable about a variety of subjects, especially mathematics and chemistry. What surprised her was his knowledge and love for the arts. From the plays of Shakespeare to the paintings of Da Vinci, they spend hours discussing and sharing their love for certain artists. Unfortunately, the boy figured out she couldnât read when he asked about her favorite authors and didnât respond to his questions. Instead, she mumbled an apology.
âThere is nothing to be ashamed of, Elizabeth. I understand you didnât have the opportunity growing up. I would be more than happy to teach you how to read,â the sweet boy said as he pulled out a copy of Romeo and Juliet.
âIâm flattered, but you donât have to. I donât want to burden you,â Elizabeth said with a flustered expression.
âI donât mind at all. Besides, itâs a gift to read and share your knowledge with the world. Why donât we get started? Iâm confident youâll learn in no time.â He said with his charming smile and hopeful attitude. She agreed.
Later on, Albert felt better and visited the orphanage with Elizabeth. However, Albert neglected to interact with the children. He was observing them to find the perfect child for his father. As if she read his mind, Elizabeth suggested that Albertâs father adopt her sunshine boy, and his younger brother, Louis. It sparked something inside him.
One morning, she woke up bright and early because she had the task of cleaning Williamâs (a.k.a. Albertâs biological brother) room before a few guests arrived. She didnât realize the guests were the two boys from the orphanage and were part of the Moriarty family. The guests were the young boy she befriended and his younger brother. Out of sheer fear, she ran back to her room. They kept her in the dark about their arrival ahead of time. If she were aware, she wouldâve dressed up nicer instead of her worn-out maid uniform. However, as if luck were not on her side, her sunshine boy noticed her and her uniform.
After a long while, the young blond to become her bodyguard, especially when the real William was around Elizabeth. Once the boys were adopted, she shifted her focus to them. Any time they were hungry, she cooked them nutritious meals. When they had an altercation with the real William, she treated their wounds. Anything they want, she gets it for them. Elizabeth does them, despite the consequences she faces for treating the boys with respect.
In the face of verbal threats and intimidation from the Moriarty family, her sunshine boy brought light and peace. When the teasing becomes too much for her, he comes to her rescue. From the late-night conversations in his room, from reading together (well, more of him teaching her how to read), and from taking care of each other, they were inseparable.
Here comes the fire. The smell of smoke woke Elizabeth up as she coughed uncontrollably, looking for anyoneâs help. As she ran towards the front door, she tripped. In this agonizing moment, she tried calling out for help. But heavy coughing accompanied every shout as the smoke consumed her body. Every second felt like a minute, and every minute felt like an hour. It was her time to go. UnlessâŠ
âI found her, brother,â someone from a distance shouted. However, she couldnât tell who was shouting. Her eyes were giving out, but hope was here again to guide her to safety and comfort. Before she passed out, she got to see her sunshine boy.
Eventually, she figured out his plan: bring down the corrupt noble class and make a revolution. His desire to help the lower class and give them a voice was admirable. Despite her initial hesitation about joining his organization, Williamâs persuasive conversation convinced her. Not only with his compassionate heart but with his intelligent plans. She believed that a revolution was comingâa world where the lower class finally attained equal rights, where they were treated fairly, and no longer struggled to gain necessities. A fairer and cleaner world. The aftermath is something she craved for so long.
So Elizabeth stayed through thick and thin. For every corrupt noble killed, it was her turn to comfort William. She knew his gentle heart broke every time he had to kill. But for a revolution to occur, they had to make sacrifices. Even if it meant permanently staining their hands with blood. However, it wasnât long before her heart broke.
This leads to right now. William was good at keeping secrets from Elizabeth, though he was a hypocrite for his actions. Both preached about honesty and trust in one another, though that was the least of Elizabethâs worries. Her biggest worry is his safety. At the bottom of the bridge, everyone waits for the death of The Lord of Crime, and at the top, she waits for William to embrace her. Safe in her arms was her sunshine boy. If onlyâŠ

âSebastian, care to explain why Charlotte has the dreaded Faustian mark on her hand?â
Oh, how Charlotte messed up!
Ciel was furious when he accidentally entered Charlotteâs room and saw her ungloved hand. So, he called a private meeting with Charlotte and Sebastian in his office. But instead of answering Cielâs questions, Sebastian remained quiet and displayed a smirking smile. âOr perhaps you can explain the mark, Charlotte? Is that why you started wearing gloves?â Ciel asked with a smile on his face as he held Charlotteâs hand. He figured if he put on a nice persona, sheâd reveal her explanation. However, Charlotte recognized the inauthenticity behind his expression. Cielâs eyes burn with anger as he struggles to contain his frustration. She could sense the intense anger radiating from Ciel, directed more at her than at Sebastian. However, Cielâs eyes concealed pain.
Charlotte felt disappointed in herself. She made a promise to Ciel to never be intimate with Sebastian, yet she broke it. It has been almost a month since Charlotte made the contract, and it has changed her. For one thing, she seemed more cheerful. No longer was her face covered in her salty tears, nor was her mouth formed into a frown. The pale skin that once resembled a vampire now has a shiny, bright glow. The usual banter between her and Sebastian was going strong and made her fall more in love with him.
âCiel, please, you seeâŠâ
âIâm not in the mood for my time to be wasted. Do speak clearly and get to the point,â Ciel snapped.
His comment startled Charlotte. She often endured his rudeness, understanding that his youth and trauma were contributing factors. Whether it was intentional or unintentional, she would move on from his moments. However, something within her snapped, as well.
Charlotte slammed her hands onto his desk, frightening Ciel.
âCiel, would it be alright if we talk privately? Iâm sure youâll find the answers you need if itâs just the two of us,â Charlotte said as she held back her tears.
âMy ladyship?â Sebastian called to her as he approached closer to Charlotte.
âIâll be fine, Sebastian. Please donât trouble yourself. I need to speak with Ciel for a moment. Why donât you turn to your chores for now?â Charlotte asked.
Sebastian hesitated, torn between his duty as a butler and the distress of leaving his ladyship in tears. Lucky for him, Ciel decided what Sebastian would do.
âItâs fine, Sebastian. I will call you once we have finished our conversation. I will need to talk to you as well. In the meantime, I am dismissing you,â Ciel said.
âAs you wish, my lord. I wonât be too far from your office,â Sebastian said, but not before he winked at Charlotte, flustering the poor dear.
After Sebastian left, both remained silent. Both were desperate to say something about the incident. Both wanted to shout their frustrations at each other. However, nothing occurred until Charlotte timidly mumbled something. âIâm sorry, Ciel.â
âApologizing for what exactly?â Ciel asked.
âFor everything, I suppose. I broke my promise, I lied to you, I made a contract with Sebastian,â she stuttered as she remained strong enough to not let her voice crack and let her tears run down her cheeks. âI hurt you, didnât I? I saw your face when you came into my room. Itâs the same expression you made when a storm frightened you,â Charlotte said.
âWhat are you going on about?â Ciel asked as his cheeks blushed a soft pink rose color.
âRemember that time you visited for my seventeenth birthday and it was storming out? You were around five. You made the same expression as if youâd seen a tremendous storm when you saw my mark,â Charlotte explained.
âCharlotte, you didnât upset me with your broken promise. People break them all the time. Iâm used to it,â Ciel explained before he sighed. âThe problem is that you made a contract with Sebastian. Youâre in danger now. Honestly, why did you do it?â He said.
âSimple, Sebastian stitched my heart before it could break fully.â She explained with a gentle smile.
âI beg your pardon?â Ciel asked with disgust.

She knew this was all a game, a losing game. However, despite everything, she loved Sebastian. What a cruel punishment. She should be relieved. Once Sebastian and Ciel fulfill their contract, the demon will leave. Her heart cracking, though it's not broken. In the short time spent together, they became friendly with each other. Friends turned into a complex relationship. A relationship with kisses and affection without being intimate. A relationship without love. The demon with his human companion. The predator with his prey.
It was a cloudy afternoon, which meant it was time for Charlotteâs afternoon tea at Cielâs garden. What she didnât realize was that Ciel wasnât feeling well until Sebastian informed her before she got out of her carriage. In a panic, she rushed towards his room to take care of Ciel.
âYou donât have to worry about me, Charlotte,â Ciel said before he started a coughing fit.âSebastian has been taking care of me. I apologize for not informing you in advance about my illness. If you want, you may spend your afternoon tea with Sebastian instead,â Ciel said as his dry voice became more pronounced.
His room was spotless before Charlotte barged in with her bag full of medical supplies she had on her carriage. On Cielâs night table were her first aid kit, Cielâs asthma medication, an ice pack, and much more that cluttered his table. There was also clutter on his bed. She laid an extra blanket on the edge of the bed. A stethoscope, an inhaler, and a small bell for him to ring for help.
âI understand, Ciel, but you shouldnât. Sebastian is busy with his chores and all. I donât want to be a burden to both of you,â Charlotte said as she laid a wet, cold washcloth on his forehead. She sighs out loud. âHe didnât even bother to change this washcloth. You were burning up.â
âI insist. You traveled all this way to visit me. Besides, Iâm sure he wonât mind. He seems quite fond of you.â Ciel said.
âFond of me?â
Ciel replied, âI was surprised as well.â
âAnd when you say he is fond of me, what do you mean by that?â Charlotte asked.
âWhat do I mean? He seems to tolerate you. Granted, youâre a more competent person to help around. Though, you overdo it,â Ciel explained before he paused. âWhy are you interested in knowing his opinion about you?â Ciel asked.
Charlotte panicked inside. Ciel suspected her relationship with Sebastian for a while now. If Ciel were to find outâŠ
âI know Sebastian is fond of you, and youâre fond of him. I donât understand why you tried hiding when you knew I would find out eventually,â Ciel interrupted before he sighed out loud. âHowever, thatâs beside the point,â he tried speaking before having another coughing fit.
Charlotte laid him down on his bed as Ciel gently grabbed her wrist. Despite his illness, her eyes widened at his tight grip.
âCharlotte, I want you to listen to me. Listen good. Donât get close to Sebastian. Donât be friendly with him, donât be affectionate with him, donât do anything with him. I understand youâre being nice to him for my sake, but donât do anything beyond being polite to him. He has no interest in you beyond consuming your soul. Besides, once I fulfill our contract, Sebastian will leave. He will not love you, he never will. Promise me you wonât become intimate with him,â Ciel said with a scowl.
Charlotte stayed quiet before she reluctantly responded. âI promise, Ciel.â She said with a fake smile on her face. âBesides, Iâm not interested in mingling with demons,â
Ciel hums before he closes his eyes. âEnjoy your afternoon, Charlotte.â
âFeel better soon, Ciel.â
And with that out of the way, he was fast asleep.
Time skip
Charlotte felt bored. As she sat on her chair and looked around Cielâs garden, she couldnât help but want to sleep. She couldnât speak with the other servants, as they were busy with their chores, and didnât want to be a burden on them. Nothing to do but drink and nibble on her biscuits. She stared at her empty tea cup until she felt goosebumps in her body and a scowl appeared on her face. Only one person has that effect on her.
âAlready finished, my ladyship? Are you perhaps dehydrated?â Sebastian asked.
âWhy canât you open the door like a normal person?â She asked with an annoyed expression.
âI suppose I should, but I donât see the point since you know my secret. Is something troubling you, my lady? Youâve been quiet for a while now. If this is about Cielâs health, I assure you he will live through.â Sebastian said.
âNo, itâs not that. Well, thatâs part of whatâs troubling me, but not the whole reason.â Charlotte said before she let out a huge sigh. âThereâs been something plaguing my mind and I need to get it out of my system.â
âIâm listening, my ladyship. Although, I do advise you to make it quick. I am quite busy today.â Sebastian said as he sat across from the table.
Charlotte gets up from her chair and walks towards him. She embraced him as her tears landed on his tailcoat.
âMy lady? Whatâs the matter?â Sebastian asked as he caressed her hair.
âWhy? Why does it have to be you?â Charlotte asked with a cracked voice.
âI beg your pardon, my lady?â Sebastian asked.
âWhy is it that whenever you speak to me, your voice replaces the one of the Lord? That your mere presence makes my heart flutter? And that your touch makes me feel more calm. Iâm supposed to be revolted by your existence. I should despise you.â Charlotte cried louder as she buckled her knees and laid her head on his lap. âBut with you, itâs the complete opposite. Youâve stolen my heart, Sebastian. I hate you for that.â
Sebastian took a step back from her confession but couldnât help but smirk. âMy ladyship, please sit back down. Iâm sure your knees are hurting right now. Besides, no gentleman wants to respond to a confession when the lady is full of tears and snot.â With the gentle touch of his fingertips wiping her tears, she sits on her chair.
âMy lady, I appreciate your honesty and your bravery. Now that you confessed, what do you intend to do with your feelings?â Sebastian asked.
âI understand that you donât feel the same, Sebastian. I do. However, I am aware that once you fulfill your contract with Ciel, you will leave. Am I right?â She asked as she tugged her clothing.
âThat is correct.â He responded.
âWith that information, all I ask for you to stay.â She said.
Sebastian chuckled at her silly suggestion. âAnd how do you intend to make me stay, my lady? Iâm quite sure a leach wonât be enough to trap me with you.â
âLetâs form a contract, Sebastian.â Charlotte declared.
âMy lady, I donât believe you understand how serious of a situation this is. You shouldâŠâ
âI understand what I am saying, Sebastian.â Charlotte interrupted him. âA fruitful life is being in your arms, and if I am a fool to desire that, then let me be your fool to toy with. Iâll keep you in my heart and mind until you consume my soul. I will remain faithful to you. No other man will come between us. By the time I die, you may have my soul. No one has made me feel this way before. I donât care about the consequences, Sebastian,â Charlotte declared. âSo, please, letâs make a contract. I donât want to be away from you. Never.â She said as she extended her arm to him.
Sebastian smiled before he shook her hand. âCertainly, my dear. I must inform you, however, you wonât get into heaven after this andâŠâ
âI am well aware, Sebastian,â Charlotte interrupted. âLike I said, I donât care. May the devilâs hand strike me down and caress me so. Fulfill my desires, Sebastian. Donât leave me,â Charlotte ordered him.
Sebastian, ecstatic with her response, extended his hand for Charlotte to hold.
âVery well, my ladyship, we shall shake hands and I will brand you as mine, and I shall be yours. I shall serve you, as well. I will protect you from any danger, I will be an affectionate being, and I will heal you from sickness. Anything my ladyship wants, she will receive,â Sebastian declared their contract.
With that, they made the contract official with the burning, stinging sensation of Charlotteâs skin in her hand. She hisses throughout the process until she sighs in relief once she survived this torturous moment. She pauses for a moment before taking a glimpse at her mark. Their Faustian contract symbol imprinted onto her skin glows a soft purple light.
âNow, my dear, give me an order,â Sebastian said.
Charlotte stared at her mark and later into Sebastianâs eyes. âSebastian,â she spoke in a soft tone. âClean up the mess.â She said with an angry tone as she showed her bloody hand. âYou shouldâve warned me ahead of time about the pain? So much for a gentleman, so much for a butler.â
Sebastian smirked before placing his hand on his heart and bows. âMy apologies, my dear. It slipped out of my mind.â
âHmph.â She glared at him. âWell? What are you waiting for? For me to bleed out? Take care of the injury you caused. Thatâs an order, Sebastian,â Charlotte demanded as her mark glowed.
âYes, my ladyship, I shall take care of you,â Sebastian said. However, before he walked away from her room, he felt Charlottes tugging on his tailcoat. âMy lady? Is something bothering you?â he asked.
Charlotte stayed quiet as her cheeks flushed red. âCan we make this more affectionate?â she asked. Though her question was vague, Sebastian knew what she was asking. He laughed, which humiliated Charlotte. She felt like a child asking their family to take care of them after a nightmare.
âMy dear, I should teach you more manners. Itâs quite a nuisance to have other people guess what youâre asking. However, just this onceâŠâ He leaned in and kissed her lips. He trapped her. Itâs only a matter of time before he will consume her being.

Today is the day. It's the most important day of any womanâs life. More important than her wedding or the birth of her child. Her funeral.
The leaves danced in the air, and the sun peered through the cloudy sky. It was beautiful, just like her auntie. Especially when the sunshine makes Madam Red's skin glow. Charlotte was in the middle of her speech when the front door burst open. It was Ciel. Although she remained brave at the ceremony, she broke when Ciel brought a stunning red dress and placed it on her body. Her loud cry echoed throughout the building.
âAuntie,â she called out, but nothing occurred. Her brief prayer went unanswered. Auntie remained âasleep.â Her tears continued to pour down until Sebastian walked towards her and kissed them away. The light gasp heard between the two encouraged him to continue to kiss her tears away. At that moment, she wanted to scold him for his affectionate behavior. However, she kept her lips closed and embraced him with all her might while he caressed her back. As much as she hated to admit it, her desire for his affection remained.
Following Madam Redâs funeral, Charlotte went into a state of depression. Her once soft skin turned dry and flakey; her once glowing hair turned a dull color; and her heart was locked away. Gone were the days of the usual back-and-forth between her and Sebastian. The awkward yet sweet moments with Ciel amplified as his immense guilt encouraged him to become closer to Charlotte. However, everything remained the same. Her aunt is gone forever. She remained chained to her bed despite Ciel and his household servantsâ attempts to cheer her up. Ciel, at one point, spent an entire afternoon with her and made her laugh once. Not on purpose, though.
Another day, another mission. The mission? Making sure Ciel impresses Aunt Francis and Elizabeth. But she knows they are visiting for Cielâs birthday. However, instead of joining her family, Charlotte remained in the same dark, graying, cold bedroom. It wasnât until it was late at night when she heard a door knock. She groans to herself. Ciel mustâve asked Sebastian to visit her.
âMy ladyship, is everything all right here?â Sebastian said as he waited for a response. He let out a loud sigh when he hadnât heard a sound. âYou shouldnât neglect your health, my ladyship. I have yet to see you eat anything since the ceremony. I apologize in advance, butâŠâ he said as he opened her bedroom door with a table full of various teas and biscuits.
âDid you have to barge into my room like that, Sebastian?â She asked in an annoyed tone as she dug deeper into her duvet.
âOh, please. I donât call that barging in. I warned you. Besides, I doubt youâd open the door if I were to ask you to. Now, letâs have you sit up. It would be best if you weren't choking on your tea. It will be a burden to wash your bedsheets,â Sebastian said as he helped Charlotte sit in bed and prepared her favotite tea. âGo ahead, my dear. Have some biscuits."
She remained silent as she glanced down at her plate.
âHaving trouble eating as well? Have no fear. I will assist you. Say, ahh.â He said with the same playful expression on his face as he tried to spoon-feed her.
Her face flustered a pretty rose shade, and he placed a biscuit in her mouth before she could say anything. She scowled before she immediately spat it out.
âWhat the devil are you doing? If this is some sick joke, then get out.â She demanded.
âNow, now, my lady. I was merelyâŠâ
âJust get out!â She shouted, interrupting him. âI wish to be alone, so pleaseâŠâ her voice cracked as Charlotteâs tears landed on her hands. Her once delicate hands are now dry and pale, as if sheâs turned into her auntie, as she clutches her duvet. âPlease, just get out.â She mumbled. She waits for him to leave her room, as she requested. But instead of hearing his footsteps from a distance, she heard them closely and clearly. Sebastian then held her hands and held them both in his.
âI apologize, my dear. I acted brutishly when you sought comfort. As a butler, I shouldâve looked after my masterâs guest in her dire need,â he said before pecking her knuckles. âIn that case, I shall take my leave. Have a good nightâs rest, my lady.â
âWait!â she shouted as she grabbed his wrist, preventing him from leaving. âStay, Sebastian,â she said. âStay here with me until I fall asleep, please,â she said as she tried to prevent the tears from rolling down her cheeks.
Sebastian, perplexed by the situation, couldnât hold back his laughter anymore. âOh, dear. How intriguing,â he said in between laughter. Charlotte glared at him as he laughed. Eventually, he pulls out a chair but gets interrupted before he can sit.
âDonât sit on that chair. Itâs uncomfortable,â Charlotte said before her face reddened. She clears her throat before mumbling, âWhy donât you lie down next to me? Iâm certain it will be much more comfortable for you if you plan to watch over me and all.â
Her request dumbfounded Sebastian before he chuckled out loud.
âAnd when will this laughing end?â She attempts to sound tough as she blushes and hides underneath her duvet.
Instead of his usual comeback, she felt a sudden dip beside her. She removes the duvet from her head and gasps at the sight. Sebastian was lying down next to her.
âWhatever makes my lady happy,â he smirked.
She slowly scoots over him and lets the silence comfort them. It was a few moments of silence before she spoke up. âIâve been meaning to ask you. Has Ciel made his final decision? What does he plan on doing with my discovery?â She asked as she held his hand and put her head on his chest.
âMy master would like to speak with you about your discovery. However, my master will take care of everything. You have to promise my master and me you wonât say a word about me,â Sebastian explained as he stroked her hair. His minimum amount of attention sent shivers down Charlotteâs spine.
âYou have my word, Sebastian. No one will know about this secret as long as no one knows what we do behind this bedroom door. You will keep this secret?â She stuttered. She gasped once she remembered the crucial information. âI havenât been able to find Ciel a present. Oh, no. Iâm a horrible person.â She pouts.
Sebastian chuckled at her trivial worries. âAre you aware my master has little care for his birthday?â
âI am aware; however, that doesnât stop me from caring about his special day. I should give him something special tomorrow morning,â she said.
âIâm certain spending time with him will be enough of a gift. Despite his demeanor, my master respects you, my lady.â He said with confidence. âNow, letâs worry about these things in the morning. You should sleep now,â he said before he planted a kiss on her forehead.
With these tragedies comes the warmth and comfort of lying with the demon, her demon. He unlocked her heart, unfortunately. The predator has cornered his prey and is waiting for him to pounce.

With any encounter with a demon, one must be on edge. Demons are sneaky creatures, manipulative, dangerous, untrustworthy, and much more. Charlotte remained cautious until she formed a contract.
Charlotte encountered the demon when Ciel started working on the Jack the Ripper case. They were never that close. Even with his return from his kidnappers, he was distant with her. His behavior led her to become distant. So, it was shocking when she received a letter from Madam Red requesting she join her to surprise Ciel and help him with his case. She hesitated at first, but she caved in. He was family, after all. Besides, Auntie would still have ways to convince her to help.
When she arrived at Cielâs London Townhouse, she was taken aback by an unfamiliar figure. It's a new butler. Though staff members come and go, there was something different about him. On the outside, the butler was just a competent and hard-working person. He was rather kind and helpful to her and her family. However, there is an unusual and unsettling aura around him. He completed his duties with no mistakes. Not to mention, at lightning speed. He was intriguing. She must get to know him.
Sebastian Michaelis introduced himself, and thus the nightmare began.
The red flags appeared almost immediately. Ciel had everyone in the carriage and requested that Sebastian compile a list of Jack the Ripper suspects. Upon accepting his masterâs request, Sebastian went to work by jumping from the carriage while it was still moving. Worried about his well-being, she looks out the window and doesnât see him anywhere. âWhere did he go?â, she thought to herself.
The next thing was when he returned to the townhouse with tea ready. All before everyone else came home. She looked perplexed by him. âHe pulled out of a long list of suspects with no injuries to his body? And he has tea ready?â, she thought to herself. Even when Madam Red questioned him, Sebastian avoided answering them with a logical explanation. It was also frustrating that Auntie didn't push for answers from the butler. But she also doesnât push for further answers since her focus is on capturing the killer and helping Ciel.
However, despite how uneasy she felt around Sebastian, she grew to have a soft spot for him. For one thing, he amuses her. Itâs entertaining to see Sebastian using his wits to tease other people besides her. Especially when the victim is Ciel or his coworkers. Ciel explained his plan to infiltrate the Viscount Druittâs mansion and arrest him. Although she volunteered to be the one to seduce the Viscount, Ciel immediately shut the idea down. The immense guilt she felt melted away once she saw Cielâs disguise. The huge, puffy pink dress with a million frills only made it worse when Sebastian opened his mouth. She never could contain her laughter around him.
Despite her denial, her heart flutters whenever Sebastian shows physical affection. Especially during at night when she has trouble sleeping. He walked into her room to comfort her. Not to baby her like her Auntie does, not to degrade her, but to comfort her. The gentle caresses that she requested from him. She knows deep down he doesnât care for her. But even then, it didnât matter. As long as she has a companion at night, it wonât matter. Even if she wonât hear the end of it.
It was just a fun game for both.
Failing to capture the killer, Charlotte experienced feelings of anxiety and devastation. She couldnât help but cling more to Madam Red to feel protected. Her warm body and reassuring and kind words always comforted her. Her Auntie was always a strong woman during difficult situations. With her clinging on to her aunt, Charlotte had to watch her least favorite sport, chess. However, after watching Ciel and Auntie play chess, she knew he was up to something and followed him (and his butler). Whether this was an excellent decision was up for debate.
It wasnât until the Jack the Ripper case was over that she received the answers.
Madame Red. She was Jack the Ripper. She killed all those innocent women and ruined their familiesâ lives. It was all too much. The shocking revelation, the blood, the fight between Sebastian and Grelle. It wasnât until she saw her auntie strangling Ciel that Charlotte knew she had to get involved. However, despite saving Cielâs life, her auntie stabbed her. The ultimate betrayal. Before she passes out, she looks back at Ciel. A sigh of relief once she realizes he is safe and uninjured. The darkness consumed her, and she slipped into unconsciousness.
Later that night, the rain drowned out the singing of crickets that once echoed throughout the evening. Though it usually lulls her to sleep, the events of earlier in the night plagued her mind. Not to mention the pain remains to plague her. Eventually, she fell asleep, but not before she woke up screaming before quickly covering her mouth. As she catches her breath, the dream plays out in her head. The same warm blood staining her skin, the loud cries of her family members, and the revelation of her dear aunt being a serial killer. She couldnât hold it in much longer. In the middle of her breakdown, Charlotte failed to realize someone was in her room.
âHaving trouble staying asleep, my ladyship? How troublesome. Would you like me to assist you? A soothing lullaby perhaps?â Sebastian asked with the same playful voice sheâs used to hearing. She glared at his question.
âHush you. I have never asked you to do something so childish as singing me a lullaby,â Charlotte said with a slight annoyance as she wiped her tears away.
âOh, no? I canât quite remember. You cling to your family members like a little child. Even to my Lord, you cling tightly.â Sebastian replied with a smirk.
âHmph. It was a moment of weakness, but thatâs just it. It was one moment. Say, how did you get into my room? I didnât hear the door open,â Charlotte said.
âNever mind that, my lady. You have trouble staying asleep, so I made you some hot chamomile tea. My lord has informed me you are quite picky, especially with tea. He told me you like your tea plain. So, I hope you enjoy your cup.â
âCiel told you?â Charlotte stammered as she gazed at the cup. âI didnât think he would remember something as simple as that,â she let out a small smile. âI will have to thank him for that some other time.â She hesitated before drinking her tea. âThis is quite adequate. Thank you, Sebastian,â Charlotte said as she tried not to gag. Any praise Sebastian gets from her, he becomes a cheeky bastard. What an annoyance!
âHowever, that doesnât answer my question, Sebastian. I knew you were watching me. The moment I started following you both, I saw your eyes on me. So, I ask again, how did you get into my room without making a sound?â
âNow, now, my lady,â Sebastian said as he tugged her hair behind her ears. Itâs been like a cycle between the two. Whenever she has suspicions about Sebastian, he uses physical affection to keep her mind occupied. Such as when she questioned how he got her afternoon tea and cake ready in a blink of an eye, a soft caress of her cheek and a compliment made her forget about her question. Often, her cheeks would turn rosy, and she would respond with a shy smile. A little touch goes a long way. However,
âStop that immediately.â Charlotte raised her voice and scooted away from Sebastian. âEnough of your affections for now. I know you and Ciel are hiding something here. You made that long list of suspects in a short amount of time. You absolute maniac, why did you jump out of the carriage? I didnât even hear a groan from your lips. And I swear you have super strength and speed. How?â She takes a moment to take a deep breath. âYou know I saw everything, Sebastian,â she starts. âThat fight with Grelle was the final nail in the coffin. Youâve been suspicious since the very beginning. So admit it, Sebastian. Youâre a demon, arenât you?â she said with a scowl.
Sebastian smirked at her revelation and chuckled. âMy lady, youâve had quite an unfortunate night,â Sebastian interrupted her. âItâs best to get some rest now. I promise you will find the answers to your questions soon enough. Iâm sure your auntie doesnât want you to stress out,â he said with a light chuckle at the end. Her eyes widened. Thatâs right, Auntie is no longer here.
In pure rage, she lifted her hand out to slap Sebastian, only to be stopped. A tight grip was on her wrist as Sebastianâs smirk only grew.
âMy lady, how cruel. Here I thought we were getting along swimmingly.â Sebastian squeezes her hand small, delicate hand as he presses his lips on her knuckles.
âAuntie.,â she mumbled, as if it were a brief prayer. As if she called out her name, Madam Red would appear. Unfortunately, that will never be the case. Instead, she faces Sebastian, the demon butler. âSo you are a demon,â she mumbled again to herself. âWhat are your intentions with Ciel?â she raised her voice. âAre you after his soul, perhaps? Or are youâŠâ
âIâm only going to say this once more. Rest now, dear. You have a long day ahead of you. I need to report your discovery to my master first thing in the morning. We shall see what we will do with you soon. Enjoy your night,â he whispered in her ear as he caressed her cheek. She gasps softly at his touch. Normally, she would feel his glove touching her cheek. She glanced at his hand, and her stomach dropped as she saw his mark. The Faustian contract mark.
âGood night, my lady. I hope you sleep well. I can't wait to see you in the morning,â he said before he planted a soft peck on her cheek. A goodnight kiss, a kiss goodbye to a normal life.
âGood night, Sebastian.â
