Why people should take up blogging and journaling
A couple of differences between tumblr and twitter, for me:
Your tweets are displayed using twitterâs website, and although they have a permalink, you donât have control over appearance and loading speed.
Tumblr is an actual website, your own, and so it feels more permanent. Search bar localised and feels personal
Twitter is great for going through, say, lists with 2000 people in a jiffy, and they can all share their news, papers etc. so really great for text based news
Tumblr really enjoyable with photos gifs illustrations and quotes. And canât really imagine what following 2k people would feel like. Guess is itâs untenable.
So tumblr feels like a visit to a museum for me. Twitter a walk around an academic poster session. Former a pleasant break, with nostalgia and clever retro art and memes. Latter intellectually stimulating but can be exhausting too.
The word character limit on twitter is nonsense, however. perhaps thatâs what makes twitter timeline readable, but donât agree with philosophy of threads etc. Just really irritating for paying attention and reading through ideas and insights.
One of the reasons I dislike non blogging platforms like twitter and Instagram is that they control how your content is displayed. An actual blog like Wordpress or tumblr or whatever letâs you decide how much of your work youâd like people to see and how it shows up. I noticed another annoying thing about Instagram-as of Dec 2022, when you use the embed post link from Instagram, it displays an image also a clickable video, which is unnecessary and ugly because it makes the picture grainy. I understand the ease of using these platforms and how they donât put too much pressure on people to get started, but these platforms are really rubbish.

Iâve been playing with this the last couple of days, itâs very clever and fun. Iâm still getting on well with my markdown set up (see previous post on medium) and with obsidianâs citation package and the markdown package in latex, things are a breeze. (Iâll expand at some other point.) But this is a serious contender.
As much as I love my iPhone for listening to audiobooks, look up papers and journal, ever so often I get my carpal tunnel back, painful. Now Iâm using my forefinger to write out things, likely making things worse. Is there anyway out? Perhaps dictation, but once it accommodates non native accents.
