( ♔ ) ____ There was a long stretch of silence among the patter of droplets, as if every part of him tuned out the world around him. There was almost a eerie calm about it, being away from his group, like how it was before there were scrapes on his palms and crusted blood around his heart. He didn’t mind the water seeping through his clothes, drenching him mindlessly. Besides—
The last time he was in the rain, he was running away.
With rapid blinking of coal lashes to filter his vision through the rain, sneakers loudly squelched, as if breaking the noise barricade, filtering all the sound through. Even then it was quiet. He hated it as much as he needed it. Pushing soaking hair from damp skin, trained eyes zoned in on the only moving object within the radius of the park he could see. A boy? No. A man. A stranger all alone in the rain, dripping wet. So much like himself.
Whatever compelled him to stop only feet away needed explanation.
But, Cayden really never could form the words for anything he had done—none of the decisions he’s made up until now. But he did open his mouth, tongue momentarily sticking to the roof, before uttering,
"Do you need an umbrella, or somethin’?"
However refreshing he liked to assume the rain to be for him, there was always something off, something explainable. He hated that sensation deeply because of how lost and unbalanced it made him feel ;;;; but he knew not how to dispel such a burden. The distant rumble of thunder caused Charlie to open his eyes, arms lowering until wet hands settled back into his lap. He remained there for a good while, stationary and silent like a despondent statue. His chest felt empty and cold, though Charlie is sure it has nothing to do with the weather. His wandering thoughts are scattered like billiard balls when the presence of another is suddenly known ;;;; Charlie drags his hooded gaze away from the heavens and directs it upon the stranger standing next to him, who just so happens to be just as water-logged as him. Blinking slowly, Charlie shakes his head at the suggestion, wet lashes fluttering shut momentarily. "No, I'm fine. Thanks, though."
