The ballroom shimmered gold beneath cascading chandeliers, all polished marble and quiet orchestral music. Wealthy politicians, executives, and foreign diplomats drifted across the dance floor in glittering clusters while a couple of G.U.N. agents hid behind practiced smiles and champagne glasses. Shadow stood near the edge of the room, posture stiff despite the tailored black suit hugging against his frame. His crimson tie matched the glow of the wine in nearby glasses. “You should fix that frown, Agent Shadow,” Syrene's voice purred softly through the comm device hidden in her earring. Shadow glanced sideways at her from across the ballroom. “I’m surveying the room.” “Mhm.” She leaned against one of the pillars, violet dress flowing around her legs like silk smoke. Gold jewelry gleamed at her wrists and ears, but the ruby set into her bracelet caught his attention most. Deep red. His red. “…The target still hasn’t arrived,” Shadow muttered as he tugged on the knot in his tie. “Then we have time.” The orchestra shifted songs into a slower softer tune. Couples immediately began drifting toward the center floor. Syrene tilted her head, eyes glittering knowingly. “Dance with me.” Shadow raised a brow. “That isn’t necessary.” “No,” she said lightly, “but it’ll make us look less suspicious.” Then her smile turned foxy. “Unless you’re scared.” Shadow scoffed under his breath. “Of dancing?” “Of me.” For half a second, silence sat between them. The music wrapped around the room in warm strings and piano. Then Shadow crossed the floor toward her. Syrene tried not to look too pleased when he stopped directly in front of her. He raised a gloved hand. Stiff as ever. Professional. But his gaze betrayed him. It lingered on the red against her lips. The way his own colors seemed woven into her entire appearance tonight. Like she had dressed with him in mind. “…You’re staring,” Syrene whispered, coy, as she adjusted the side of her tufts. Shadow immediately looked away. “You’re imagining things.” A quiet chuckle escaped her as she slipped her hand into his. His grip tightened instinctively, careful but firm, and for once Shadow almost wished the mission would take longer. Just so he could hold her without having to call it strategy.
