Schistocyte (a.k.a.Ā āhelmet cellā)Ā
This is a pathologic RBC form that results from shear stress. This is an important one not only to recognize, but to know the DD.Ā
This can be caused by:Ā DIC, TTP/HUS, HELLP syndrome, or mechanical hemolysis (e.g. mechanical value replacement).Ā
Use the symptoms presented in the case to narrow down the cause from this list. In general, each causes the RBC to travel through a region of circulation that creates shear stress on the RBC (a blood clot, or small valve opening, ect.)
