HADESTOWN SENTENCE STARTERS PT. I
taken from the original cast recording, feel free to change pronouns/etc!
part ii || part iii
ROAD TO HELL
‘ don’t ask where. ’ ‘ it was hard times. ’ ‘ it was a world of gods and men. ’ ‘ it’s an old song. ’ ‘ it’s an old tale from way back when. ’ ‘ it’s a sad tale. it’s a tragedy. ’ ‘ it’s a sad song, but we sing it anyway. ’ ‘ it’s a tale of a love that never dies. ’ ‘ it’s a love song about someone who tries. ’
LIVIN’ IT UP ON TOP
‘ i’m an outdoor girl. ’ ‘ i’m trying to enjoy myself. ’ ‘ when the sun is high, so am i. ’ ‘ when my man comes around, i know he’s gonna bring me down. ’ ‘ why would a man of his own free go to work all day in the mine and mill? ’ ‘ you think i give a damn? ’ ‘ why would you trade the sunshine for a couple of nickels and dimes? ’ ‘ no one here’s a millionaire. ’ ‘ we’re living it up. ’ ‘ what we have, we have to share. ’ ‘ give me a lyre, and a campfire, and an open field at night. ’ ‘ give me the sky that you can’t buy or sell at any price, and i’ll give you a song for free. cause that’s how life outta be. ’ ‘ anybody want a drink? ’ ‘ let the poet bless this round! ” ‘ if no one takes to much, there will always be enough. ’ ‘ let the world we dream about be the one we live in now. ’
ALL I’VE EVER KNOWN
‘ i was alone so long. ’ ‘ i was alone so long, i didn’t even know that i was lonely. ’ ‘ this is how it’s always been. ’ ‘ all i’ve ever known is how to hold my own. ’ ‘ all i’ve ever known is how to hold my own, but now i wanna hold you too. ’ ‘ you take me in your arms, and suddenly there’s sunlight all around me. ’ ‘ and for a moment i forget just how dark and cold it gets. ’ ‘ i don’t ever wanna have to let you go. ’ ‘ i don’t wanna go back to the lonely life. ’ ‘ say that you’ll hold me forever. say that the wind won’t change us. say that we’ll stay with each other, and it’ll always be like this. ’ ‘ i’m gonna hold you forever. the wind will never change on us. as long as we stay with each other, then it will always be like this. ’
WAY DOWN HADESTOWN
‘ better go and get your suitcase packed. ’ ‘ i guess it’s time to go. ’ ‘ those who go, they don’t come back. ’ ‘ winter’s nigh and summer’s over. ’ ‘ down there, it’s a bunch of stiffs. i’ll be bored to death. ’ ‘ give me morphine in a tin. give me a crate of the fruit of the vine. ’ ‘ everybody dresses in clothes so fine. ’ ‘ the wage is nothing and the work is hard. ’ ‘ an eye for an eye. ’ ‘ a lie for a lie, and your soul for sale. ’ ‘ you’re early. ’ ‘ i missed you. ’ ‘ seems like you own everything. kinda makes me wonder how it feels. ’
EPIC II
‘ king of diamonds, king of spades. ___ was king of a kingdom of dirt. ’ ‘ the river styx was a river of stones. ’ ‘ ____ laid them high and thick with a million hands that were not their own. ’ ‘ and stone by stone, row by row, the river rose up. ’
CHANT
‘ keep your head low. ’ ‘ if you wanna keep your head, you gotta keep your head low. ’ ‘ in the coldest time of year, why is it so hot down here? ’ ‘ it ain’t right, and it ain’t natural. ’ ‘ lover, you were gone so long. ’ ‘ lover, i was lonely. ’ ‘ lover, when you feel that fire, think of it as my desire for you. ’ ‘ i’ll sing a song of a love gone wrong. ’ ‘ every year, they have this fight. ’ ‘ lover, while you sing your song, winter is coming on. ’ ‘ all the pretty songs you sing ain’t gonna shelter us from the wind. ’ ‘ why is it so bright down here? ’ ‘ when you see that glare, think of it as my despair for you. ’ ‘ when the gods are having a fight, everybody else better hold on tight! ’ ‘ everything i’ve saved is gone. ’ ‘ fire ain’t gonna light itself. ’ ‘ every year, it’s getting worse, hell on earth. ’ ‘ did you think i’d be impressed? ’ ‘ i recall there was a time we were happy, you and i: in there garden where we met. nothing was between us yet. ’ ‘ lover, everything i do i do it for the love of you. ’ ‘ if you don’t even want my love, i’ll give it to someone who does. ’ ‘ harbor me. ’
HEY, LITTLE SONGBIRD
‘ hey, little songbird, give me a song. ’ ‘ i’m a busy man, and i can’t stay long. ’ ‘ cat got your tongue? ’ ‘ always a pity for one so pretty and young when poverty comes to clip your wings and knock the wind right out of your lungs. ’ ‘ i want to fly down and feed at your hand. ’ ‘ i want a nice, soft place to land. i want to lie down forever. ’ ‘ the choice is yours, if you’re willing to choose. ’ ‘ you’ve got nothing to lose. ’ ‘ suddenly, nothing is as it was. ’ ‘ wasn’t it gonna be the two of us? weren’t we birds of a feather? ’ ‘ let me guess: he’s some kind of poet and he’s penniless? give him your hand, he’ll give you his hand-to-mouth. he’ll write you a poem when the power is out… hey, why not fly south for the winter? ’ ‘ look all around you: see how the vipers and vultures surround you. ’ ‘ they’ll take you down, they’ll pick you clean if you stick around such a desperate scene. ’ ‘ people get mean when the chips are down. ’
‘ harbor me. ’ / for am :'''^)
Amelina’s eyes light up in SURPRISE and delight as a hand eagerly juts out for the magician to take. She’s content with being shelter to someone she easily calls home. “Of course, Asra. We harbor each other... Like perfectly balanced scales. One cannot exist without the other.” Honey eyes keep their light as her smile spreads.

sentences from amrit brar’s shitty horoscopes series. you may adjust as needed.
BOOK I: SUCH TERRIBLE THINGS
❛ holy fucking shit. just. holy shit. what the fuck. ❜
❛ nobody really knows the nuances of what you get up to in your spare time, and honestly they’re probably better off that way. ❜
❛ busy yourself with the affairs of the living, for once.. ❜
❛ the answer is no. ❜
❛ ohhh boy. you. fuck you. yes, you specifically. ❜
❛ delete your search history. ❜
❛ please practice blinking as others can be unsettled by your inhuman ability to maintain an unbreakable stare during casual conversation. ❜
❛ what did you ever do to deserve this? in all probability, something terrible. ❜
❛ you are a crayon. get out of the toolbox. ❜
❛ none will love the butcher. don’t take it too personally. ❜
❛ some relationships, like warts, can be handled with the tactful application of liquid nitrogen. ❜
❛ take a long shower. wash your hair. wash the clothes you were wearing. wash the memories from your mind and body. ❜
BOOK II: ANGER
❛ frostbite is considerably difficult to heal from. ❜
❛ there is poetry in brutal efficiency. ❜
❛ HELLFIRE HELLFIRE HELLIRE. ❜
❛ people would take your raging far more seriously if you weren’t crying the entire time. ❜
❛ what made you so vindictive? ❜
❛ some bodies may be temples, but all are ruins at your feet. ❜
❛ your contempt will always taste like grief. ❜
❛ in the process your body is subsumed piece by piece. ❜
❛ you are the bone-deep fury of an abscessed tooth. ❜
❛ you are notorious for rubbing salt in the wound. cheap vodka in the wound. battery acid in the wound! ❜
❛ vehicular arson is not the answer. ❜
❛ hate is a verb. ❜
BOOK III: PETTY EXISTENTIAL CRISES
❛ the sooner you accept your impending expiration, the sooner you can stop trying to swallow the sun. ❜
❛ embrace the inevitable. snuggle with the inevitable. take the inevitable out to a nice, candle-lit dinner. ❜
❛ there are forces outside of your control. most of them don’t care for you. ❜
❛ when it all goes to hell just remember it’s what’s inside that counts (though many would not find you very appetizing). ❜
❛ not all things have significance, which is scary. the things you overlooked tend to have the most, which is scarier. ❜
❛ your teeth are only porcelain, your ribcage simply glass. like all delicate things, they can know no permanence. ❜
❛ in time you’ll learn that “just” and “right” only mean the same thing when they’re coming from very specific people. please don’t cry. ❜
❛ you may not want to change, but the world is unforgiving and will do it for you anyway. ❜
❛ sometimes we put our hearts in the wrong places (what the fuck is it going between your teeth). ❜
❛ nothing can stay. ❜
❛ you can put all the flowers in your mouth that you fucking want, but dying is dying and rot is rot. ❜
❛ loneliness is the fracture that never heals quite right. ❜
BOOK IV: RESOLUTIONS
❛ lay them to rest. ❜
❛ they are there, hovering nervously. you will watch the skies. you will wait. ❜
❛ eat the other. ❜
❛ there will be scrapes and sutures: viciousness and victory. ❜
❛ no loose ends. ❜
❛ a cacophony of awe and joy and terror. ❜
❛ an eye for an eye. a tooth for a tooth. a knife for the ribs. ❜
❛ you will not be swayed by the morally destitute. ❜
❛ decay will feed the bloom. ❜
❛ devour death like crows, for all the feathers between your teeth. ❜
❛ twisting/screaming/uncompromising. every inch. every iota. ❜
❛ once, answers were found in mouths, bathtubs, and bottles. this time around, get inventive. ❜
BOOK VI: AFTER THE FALL
❛ lies you have told yourself: your humanity is the largest burden you will bear. ❜
❛ decorating your meltdowns is all well and good, but a trainwreck is a trainwreck and it might be time to get a paramedic. ❜
❛ they tell you “there i nothing to fear but fear itself,” but you have seen yourself in the mirror. ❜
❛ you may have been gutted but you mouth is soft, your tongue is silver, and your teeth are gemstones cut to size. ❜
❛ it’s less like biting off more than you can chew, and more like dislocating your jaw. ❜
❛ even spectres can tire. ❜
❛ seeing yourself for who you really are would be great if you knew where to start looking. ❜
❛ it pays to kill with kindness when you’re your own worst enemy. ❜
❛ you’re only armed to the teeth because you’re more brittle than you’d care to admit. ❜
❛ your ego cannot afford cremation or caskets. ❜
❛ frequent tastes of your own medicine can get poisonous real quick. ❜
❛ self reflection is important! whether you like what you see is up for debate. whether it can be contained in a dark basement is another matter entirely. ❜
BOOK VII: MAGICK
❛ you are a quiet god, and your hunger is cavernous. ❜
❛ at times your body is simply a prison laid in gold. ❜
❛ death, dust, party, repeat. ❜
❛ devour the monsters and you can call any place home. ❜
❛ you’re only as lucky as your expectations are low. ❜
❛ worse than having too many secrets is having no secrets at all. ❜
❛ if seeing is believing you might be in some trouble. ❜
❛ suspend belief. expel fear. throw reason into a frigid cell, never to be seen again. ❜
❛ killing the monsters is the easy bit. it’s finding them that’s the hard part. ❜
❛ there exists a tipping point between gods and monsters. ❜
❛ a mouthful of ashes bested by a life of smoke and mirrors. ❜
❛ what’s to be gained from the keeping the heaviest of treasures behind your teeth? ❜

She’s Back,
“It isn’t too absurd to believe a bit in the impossible. In fact, it’s absurd to believe that the concept of impossible EXISTS. In this world, anything – and I DO mean anything – is possible. All you have to do is make it so.”
JULIAN.
if adira believes her ‘reason’ will stop julian, then she is wrong. in fact, it only spurs him more into mischief, eyes gleaming as he catches her sharp gaze. oh ! she’s working too hard ! it isn’t as if a moment spared for him will be the end of their practice. a grin pulls wide across his face, as the doctor continues, prodding at the excised kidney, taken from its preservative to study.
❝ — oh, dearest. i’m EVER so lonely. if only you’d join me in poking my… ORGAN, so that i won’t need for any longer. ❞ a sigh, dramatics flowing from him, easy as breathing. lashes are bat, long against pale, worn cheeks, and his eyes shift longingly toward her. when gray eyes peer from beneath his lashes, who can reject him ? surely, if anyone has the power, it is adira. ❝ join me, my apprentice. ❞
She should have expected this. Her resistance only makes him more dedicated to his cause. Normally, she’d find this somewhat endearing; though right now she really DOES want to focus some -- if not all -- of her attention on the work that needs to be done. ( Interesting, how the apprentice currently works harder than the master. )
YES is a powerful word. It has the energy to start combat, to approve of rituals and weddings. YES is a welcoming word, a door to the previously thought of as impossible. It’s a word that should be used sparingly but instead is passed out like flowers, sometimes seen as rare or special but so, so common. Even so, powerful too is the word NO. Men halt in their steps for a no. Rejection is prominent in the word. Flow stops. Both words, both powerful in their own right.
Adira knows the power of words, which is why she doesn’t say either.
“...Perhaps.” She looks over to Julian, ever-dramatic. Her face tries not to show emotion; but she can’t help but smile slightly, even if she KNOWS Julian will exploit it. Her tone is playful now, giving into the dramatics. “I might watch, but you couldn’t pay me to actually poke it.”
“What if there is more that we could be doing? I don’t want to miss any opportunities to grow, but I just keep being told no.”
@hercourtesy call.
“...You know the PUPPY EYES don’t work on me, right Julian?”
