Krashen’s Input Hypothesis
People learn in only one way, by understanding messages, getting “comprehensible input”
Speaking is a result, not a cause.
If input is understood and there is enough of it, the necessary grammar is automatically provided.
Krashen tried to explain his theory by the “Silent period”
Problems:
No answer to how language is acquired
There may be other explanations for the silent period (anxiety, personality, etc.) How do we learn, if in the beginning we know nothing?
The Input Hypothesis doesn’t explain
- How learners progress form understanding to acquisition
- What is “comprehensible input”, not clear… just beyond the syntactic complexity of what he knows at present… - impossible to define clearly
Conclusion:
Acquisition is caused by understanding the input but internal factors are given little emphasis
The importance of output is de-emphasized
A more balanced view is required

Juncker Plan set to trigger €236.1 billion across the EU
“The Investment Plan for Europe - the so-called Juncker Plan - is now expected to trigger €236.1 billion in investments. Following this month’s meeting of the European Investment Bank’s (EIB) Board of Directors, operations approved under the European Fund for Strategic Investments (EFSI) now represent a total financing volume of €46.5 billion and are located in all 28 Member States. The EIB has approved 312 EFSI-backed operations, supported by €36.1 billion in EFSI financing. The European Investment Fund (EIF) has also approved 306 SME financing agreements, with total financing under the EFSI of €10.4 billion. Around 454,000 small and medium-sized businesses are expected to benefit from improved access to finance as a result of these EIF agreements. The European Commission and the EIB Group estimate that the EFSI has so far supported 300,000 jobs across the EU. By 2020 that figure should be 700,000. On 13 September, the European Parliament and Member States came to an agreement in principle on EFSI 2.0 - the extension and reinforcement of the European Fund for Strategic Investments.”

#SMEInstrument: essential tips for your application
“After the evaluation of the first proposals received in June 2014 we published a list of tips for potential applicants to the SME Instrument. These pointers received such a warm welcome that we decided to work on a new version building on the experience gained during the evaluation of around 2,500 new proposals. Some of the tips below may seem obvious but, believe us, they can make a huge difference to the success of your project!
Is the SME Instrument really for you?
Before you take a strategic decision to apply, look carefully at the objectives of the work programme and assess if your project is in line with them. In a nutshell, you need a disruptive innovation, a clear ambition to grow at EU level, a demonstrated knowledge of your target market and a convincing commercialisation plan. It is crucial that you are ready to convince on each and every one of these aspects.
You should also seek advice from National Contact Points, your local branch of the Enterprise Europe Network or other structures, such as incubators. Before meeting them, prepare a 3 minutes pitch of your project to make sure your ideas are clearly presented. If the SME Instrument is not for you, they will direct you towards other funding available at European, national or regional levels.”
