It greatly upsets me to see people degrade, dehumanize, belittle, and overly criticize Shuichi.

A lot of the dislike that he gets stems from the hatred people have that Kaede was a fake protagonist. Like almost always when I see someone who dislikes Shuichi they’ve mentioned somewhere on their blog about how Kaede should have been the protagonist.

They blame Shuichi for what Kodaka did to Kaede.

I’ve seen a lot of criticisms over Shuichi which when you stop to think about, are really just… Hyper-magnified issues that comes with all the DR protagonists, or are putting Kodaka’s bad writing onto Shuichi like it’s the characters fault.

Plot armor? Have you seen the other DR games? Makoto is the only DR character that was going to be properly executed and literally from a stroke of “”“luck”“” and that thick Plot Armor did he survive. Hajime I don’t think even ever got anyone trying to single him out and kill him. At least when Shuichi was “executed” with Maki and Himiko it was implied Keebo was the reason they all survived, purposefully making sure the rubble didn’t crush them like it did Tsumugi. Alter Ego was far gone in DR 1, and only showed up when it’s Makoto who’s being executed and not Kyoko. You wanna talk about bullshit plot armor…

People also complain about Shuichi having certain kinds of flaws–you know, character flaws like being extremely doubtful of his abilities, highly dependent on others for moral, emotional and mental support, those kinds of flaws? He’s weak. He’s weak minded and weak willed. That’s why his final stand to offer up his own life at the end of chapter 6 is so impactful. He’s not depending on anyone emotionally or mentally anymore.

And then people blame Shuichi for Kodaka’s shitty writing, like him being unobservant despite being a detective. Which, for one, Shuichi is observant–but only when the plot isn’t inconvenienced by him being observent. Anything to do with Kokichi, for one thing, because had Shuichi been as observent as he is normally with Kokichi’s behavior he would have altered the entire course of the game and how chapters 4 and 5 went. Kokichi unfortunately was the character that Kodaka wrote himself into a corner with because he’s too smart for the plot and thus Every Character (Shuichi included) was made to be stupid and unobservant around Kokichi to make Kodaka’s plot even barely functional. Kodaka had to literally dumb Shuichi down in order for his plot to work.
