But Max doesn't know that. There are enough surface similarities for her to be wary of him. Eddie on the other hand sees how she acts around him and thinks she's wary of him bc he is a nerd and a freak, and thinks that means she is a bad friend to the other boys bc they're also nerds and freaks and she's never around anyway. So, and because he's a bit of an inconsiderate asshole, he ramps up his loudness and weirdness and general Eddie-ness around her to be petty and/or teach her a lesson, but not to cause her any actual harm.
