sad post, just wanted to put my thoughts somewhere people can see them [tw: animal death]
a month ago, on july 30th, a cat showed up on our porch
this happens a lot, there's been about 4/5 generations of cats in our neighborhood - she was different though, she was really trusting of us. we thought she was about one year old, since she wasn't as big as a full grown cat but she definitely wasn't a kitten. we named her basil
she didn't show back up for a while, but around mid august (about the 13th I think) she came back, this time on our backyard
since then she's always been there, only disappearing for at most a day or two - she brought a friend too, we called them sage. sage was a lot shyer, they stayed towards the back on some lawnmowers usually. sometimes they were in the middle of the backyard but they always ran behind the fence when we got close
yesterday, when basil came by, she layed down in our garage, and didn't move. didn't eat, didn't drink
today, she did the same, but this time she had flies all around her
two hours ago (8pm my time), we found her next to the gate motionless but breathing just the slightest bit. according to my mom (I went back inside to get my sibling and stayed inside the rest of the time) she had blood coming out of her nose and mouth
they put her in a big circular container we had shaped like a frog on a towel so she wouldn't be in the dirt
I wanted to do something, I really did. but im only a kid — we don't have enough money to spend on whatever vet care she would've needed and. I think by the time she came yesterday it was already too late
this is. my first direct experience with death, of losing someone I care about
last year my great grandmother died, but I never met her so. I was pretty neutral about it
but. I knew basil. even if only for a month- I knew her. and. now she's gone. and I can't change that.
it's. a lot to deal with. so. typing it out helped a little. not much, I mean- im crying right now but hey it's something
