The willful ignorance surrounding what âSympathy is a Knifeâ is about is genuinely heart breaking because itâs SO clearly not about Taylor personally. Charli is expressing her insecurity, her self-loathing, and her feelings of inadequacy next to a star with as much power, privilege, and influence as Taylor.
Charli is EXTREMELY clear in the song that these are deeply personal issues she is struggling with and the song never once puts blame on Taylorâitâs about Charli trying to cope with these complicated and deeply upsetting feelings. Charli is not blaming Taylor (it seems obvious that Sympathy is a Knife is HIGHLY LIKELY to be about Swift, but the way the song is written you can honestly fill in any woman or person you compare yourself to negatively).
