The Back Counter Triple Axel - A Trademark of Yuzuru Hanyu

The counter is a difficult turn in figure skating. In order to perform this turn the skater must change direction from backward to forward or vice versa, switch from a clockwise curve on entry to counterclockwise curve on exit or vice versa, by rotating their body in a direction counter to the entry curve, while maintaining their edge (inside or outside) before and after the rotation. Yuzuru Hanyu’s trademark triple Axel is entered using a left back outside counter, in which he would skate along a deep clockwise curve - opposite the rotational direction of the jump, make the turn to follow a counterclockwise exit curve, and take off directly from his left forward outside edge without any assistance from the right foot. It is currently the most difficult entry to a triple Axel in the field.
