I was the type of kid who would come back home late, all bruised and with dirt under his nails because he had buried a mouse the other kids killed.

I used to like the mornings

I'd survived another night

I'd walk to breakfast through the garden

see the flowers stretching in the sunlight

now I wake up in the mornings

and all the kindness is drained out of me

I spend hours just wincing

and trying to regain some sense of peace

What if you took one more?

would the metal from the gun feel lighter on my hands if I was sure of my decision? would my aim be less shaky? would it be a single, clean shot? would there be less wailing? would it be easier to carry the carcass home and then skin it?

would it make any difference?

when my fingers stumble upon the bullet hole among the fur, would I hesitate to keep peeling off that coat? it's the same coat I saw squirming through a hole on the chicken's coop. it's the same eyes I saw between the trees, stealing glances at the meat roasting over the fire.
