Nuestra Señora de la Santa Muerte (Spanish for Our Lady of Holy Death), often shortened to Santa Muerte, is a female deity or folk saint in Mexican and Mexican-American folk Catholicism. A personification of death, she is associated with healing, protection, and safe delivery to the afterlife by her devotees. Despite condemnation by the Catholic Church, her cult has become increasingly prominent since the 2000s.

The worship of Santa Muerte is condemned by the Catholic Church in Mexico as invalid, but it is increasingly firmly entrenched in Mexican culture.

Santa Muerte is also seen as a protector of homosexual, bisexual, and transgender communities in Mexico, since many are considered to be outcast from society. Many LGBT people ask her for protection from violence, hatred, disease, and to help them in their search for love.

Her intercession is commonly invoked in same-sex marriage ceremonies performed in Mexico. The Iglesia Católica Tradicional México-Estados Unidos, also known as the Church of Santa Muerte, recognizes gay marriage and performs religious wedding ceremonies for homosexual couples.

If there’s currently a heat wave in your country (like in mine), here are just a few reminders because I love you and want you to be safe: 

- Drink lots of water! 

- If you hate plain water and have a hard time drinking enough of it, it’s more than okay to mix it with fruit juice or similar. Being dehydrated will (in most cases) harm you more than drinking a bit of sugar. 

- Avoid going outside during the hottest hours of the day, if possible. 

- Don’t take ice cold showers. I know it sounds tempting but it can be overwhelming for the body and you risk feeling even worse after it. 

- If you bind your chest, try to take a break from it during the hottest hours (or even for a whole day, if possible). Binders trap in heat and can make you overheat quickly! 

- Wear light and loose-fitting clothes whenever possible.

House Bill 4572 would update the Illinois Human Rights Act to fill a loophole in the law allowing businesses which employ less than 15 people to discriminate on the basis of characteristics like race, religion, national origin, military status, marital status, age, sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity.

Currently, Illinois is one of just 20 states (and D.C.) with statewide legislation on the books banning bias on basis of both sexual orientation and gender identity in employment. But supporters of HB 4572 — which passed both houses of the General Assembly in May — say current regulations leave up to a half million workers vulnerable to being fired or denied employment because of who they are.
