My post yesterday got me thinking about how no one on this site has ever really discussed the repercussions of the transition of the US hotbed of tornadoes from the Great Plains to the Southeast US, often nicknamed "Dixie Alley."

The US Southeast has the highest concentration of pre-fab homes and homes without sturdy walls of anywhere in the nation. Basically, these are some of the poorest communities in the US and climate change is pointing the tornado gun squarely at them. This is a MASSIVE problem for the following reasons:

Weak homes lead to more injuries and deaths.

Low-income communities will have a harder time recovering from disaster.

Less access to community services to help both before and after a disaster.

Potential for less education about what to do during a tornado.

Also, more tornadoes are happening at night when people are sleeping. A weather radio can help, but at $35 a pop (unless on sale), a weather radio can cost as much as a few days of food for a low-income family. As much as I emphasize how important weather radios are, I speak from a place of privilege where I can throw $35 at a weather radio and not think about it.

There's probably a bunch of other issues I haven't even considered here, so if you think of something, go ahead and add it. I just really wanted to point out the alarming change in tornado activity in the Southeast and why it's important that we pay attention to it in climate change conversations and conversations about race and wages.
