MANI + TOOTHLESS

she trills affectionately, twining her tail around his own. it's always so amazing to see the difference in their scale coloration. her pale hues like the clouds she hides away in, mingling with glittering silver and bold pinks.

her mate is as black as midnight, but there are swirls and spots of dark hues that utterly entrance her. he is handsome, for sure. but that isn't why she loves him so.

her head turns to gaze at him with nothing short of adoration, exhaling through her nostrils and bumping her head against the side of his neck. she speaks in the tongue of dragons to him, her voice delicate and soft like starlight.

she tells him how she believed his kind to be a myth when she was young. a story of dark twins born in thunder a mere myth told by parents to their hatchlings to fill them with awe and wonder. she thought nothing like that could possibly exist. that an entire species of dragon could be wiped out in an instant.

her father is her greatest hero. it wasn't because he was the king of dragons, though that was an impressive feat. pouncer tended to brag about this all the time to the other dragonets that they played with from time to time.

it was because he was a loving father, one who indulged her curiosities and answered her questions easily. she loved her mother, but her mother was always shy of speaking of the world above the waterfall.

dart would ask about what the skies were like up there. what the world was like when her father was her age- young and brave and fearless.

sometimes he spoke of a creature she didn't know of. a thing called a human. he said that dragons and humans were once enemies, but then became close friends. his best friend was called hiccup.

the one he would draw with the odd leg. the one she had met briefly during a human holiday, and then after when he had come with his family to there home.

she looks up at him now, her blue eyes bright and inquisitive.

she didn't fear him like she had once before. the songs of the light furies always spoke of the beasts called humans in the same way- terrible creatures that were violent and greedy and most of all, dragon killers.

since she had hatched into the hidden world years ago, spread her wings wide and breathed her first breath, this warning had been instilled upon her. within her, even.

humans were dangerous. humans were bad.

that had been proven when she had strayed too far from home. had been captured, restrained, tormented and starved. but then she had met him, the odd black fury that would become her mate. she had never seen a black fury before, but her mother would speak of them often. a breed they once knew well, now lost to the roar of the waterfall and the hands of fearful men.

and through him, her beloved mate, she saw a different side of humanity. she was still wary, pure instinct and past traumas rearing their head, but she did not flinch from his gaze and raise her scaled hackles like she might have done when they first met.

her blue eye regard the human with reluctant warmth, crooning low in the back of her throat while her hatchlings play with the human's own offspring. she doesn't fear for them. there is a trust here now.

he's certain he's been blessed by whatever gods the humans worship at this wonderful gift. the night fury bends down on his front legs, haunches up and waggling like an excited feline before he pounces on his prey.
