Summary: Toby and Cody are sent out on a recruiting mission. ‘Find the girl and bring her back here’ The Operator said. It was simple. Finding themselves now enrolled as college students as a cover up they find the girl. But, little do they know there’s so much more then meets the eye.
Warnings: mentions of drugs (Dilaudid), medical malpractice, implied dubcon (not reader or the boys), implied self harm, implied abuse, reader dissociates, my headcannons of Toby and Cody being neurodivergent, Cody’s still a jealous dick, Toby and reader are both attention starved and feeding off each other, not proof read per usual, i think that’s it?
Part 1, Part 2 Part 3 (you are here)
The two boys spent the rest of their evening unpacking and ‘decorating’ their shared dorm—if it could even be called that. Toby’s idea of ‘decorating’ was having all his belongings scattered about his half of the dorm. Clothes in piles on the floor. His hatches thrown haphazardly in a corner.
Toby’s side of the room constantly looks like a bomb dropped. There’s trash strewn about, dirty laundry that smells like it hasn’t been washed in months. Odd looking stains on the carpet that could be blood, soda or some other mysterious substance. To make a long story short—it’s disgusting.
Meanwhile on Cody’s side of the room it’s methodically clean. As sterile as a laboratory of course, what else would you expect? In Codys room everything has a home and if you disrupt his organization he will come for you. The other creeps are pretty sure the poor boy is autistic with some of his habits.
Not only does he have melt downs when his space is messed with but he has this odd fascination with patterns and sequences. He lines his tools out in alphabetical order according to their name. When making viruses he has a specific routine in which he conducts his experiments.
I think it’s pretty clear the boys are both a little neurodivergent, but that’s okay. They balance each other out. With Toby’s chaotic scatter brain and executive dysfunction Cody’s the one who can actually help him complete a task for once. And, when Cody has a meltdown over things being thrown off course—Toby’s always the first one to try and help him get back on track. They’re brothers after all.
The following morning the boys get ready for class. Cody being Cody meticulously prepared an outfit the night before as well as set up all the things he’d need in the morning. All the while Tobias spent that time throwing darts at a board while thinking about the cute theatre nerd with kind eyes and a pretty smile.
Cody wore an off-white button up shirt with a dark green sweater vest over top. He wore black slacks with black loafers and a few simple bracelets which he kept tucked under his sleeves. Cody looked mature. Put together in a way that seemed effortless. He always looked his best without having to put in much effort.
Toby on the other hand, looked a hot mess. Baggy denim jeans that he couldn’t keep up without a belt. An old black t-shirt with an even older red flannel covered his chest. He wore his scuffed up timberland boots with a dark red beanie to cover his wreck of a head. Toby looked like he just rolled out of bed, which to be fair—he did.
First period was as boring as could be—for Toby atleast. Cody loves math, after all—it goes hand and hand with science. Toby fiddle with his pencil, doodled in the margins of his notebook, did almost everything but pay attention. He even fell asleep for a few minutes.
Cody payed close attention to every the professor said. He jotted down notes that were organized and highlighted in a color coordinated fashion. Each page looked aesthetic and professional. When the lecture was finally over the two boys made their way over to their second period—language arts.
When they entered the lecture hall Tobias immediately perked up. Shaking Cody’s shoulder as he spotted you sitting alone in the back corner. “C-Cmon, let’s go s-sit down.” He insists, beginning to drag Cody along. “Why’re we sitting next to her?” Cody scoffs, rolling his eyes.
“H-Have you forgotten th-the entire p-p-point of the m-mission? Sh-She’s the reason wh-why we’re here!” Tobias whisper shouts, meanwhile Cody looks more annoyed by the minute. Cody finally sighs and gives in. Allowing Tobias to pull him along to where you’re sitting.
Tobias plops down beside you, giving a small wave. You look up from your book when you feel the vibrations of someone sitting next to you. Your eyes widening ever so slightly when you see Tobias sitting there with his brother Cody. You smile sheepishly, looking back down at your book.
The lecture starts a few minutes later, the teacher drones on about some dead poet. Something that bores Tobias to no end—however, you seem very intrigued. Which makes sense of course, you’re in theater. Plays and shows written by dead guys is kinda your whole thing.
Toby can’t help but find the small smile on your face cute. He watches a faint pattern form. The teacher asks a question, you mumble the answer under your breath but don’t raise your hand. Then your eyes light up when the teacher says the answer and you see you got it right. He can’t help but frown at the way you doubt your intelligence.
“Wh-Why d-don’t you speak up? You obvi-vi-viously know th-the answers?” Tobias asks, nudging your shoulder kindly. Your expression turns sheepish, looking down as you fiddle with the ends of your hair. “I don’t know..I just get nervous that I’ll be wrong.” Tobias frowns once more.
“You sh-shouldn’t be scared to get th-things wrong. Th-That’s normal. Everyo-one fucks up.” He says bluntly but not unkindly. His gaze almost tender as he looks at you. Tobias watches as you pull your sleeves down. Almost like you were hiding something.
“I-It’s ninety d-degrees out y-y’know?” He says, his eyebrows furrowing. “I run cold.” “I-I can see y-you sweating.” Something flickers in your eyes, something close to fear. “Can you just drop it?” You quickly say, your tone suddenly devoid of any emotion. Toby’s expression falters, feeling like a kicked puppy.
On one hand he knows what you’re going through—he went through the same. Yet, it hurts his heart to see you suffer like this. Should he say something? Tell you he’s been through the same things? Would you even believe him?
Toby see your leg starting to bounce. It makes his chest ache seeing you in such a vulnerable state. “H-Hey,” he begins his tone gentle. “I’m so-orry. I d-didn’t m-mean to push.” He watches as embarrassed flickers in your eyes. He notices how you refuse to look at him.
Tobias watches you chew on your bottom lip, a nervous habit you must have. “I-I’m serious. It’s o-okay.” He reassures, giving you a small smile. “I’m sorry..” Is all you can say, not really having an explanation for your sudden outburst. Well, you do—it’s just better not to say.
“Th-There’s no n-need to be sorry.” Tobias reassures once more. He gives you a small smile, the dimples on his cheeks adding to his boyish charm. It’s almost embarrassing how easily it makes your heart flutter. Although I suppose that’s what happens when you crave human connection.
Growing up in your family was a challenge to say the least. Your father was addicted to Dilaudid. The opioid gave him a euphoric feeling that nothing else could. He’d first gotten a taste when he rushed to the emergency room after being in a fatal car accident. Funny enough, that’s how he met your mother.
She was his nurse—and although she was only an intern at the time—she always made sure he was pain free. The car accident severely injured his left leg. So badly infact the doctor had to amputate the appendage. The phantom pains were intense. A trick of the mind that made his entire body ache.
For your father, being on Dilauded was like being on cloud nine. He had no worries, no problems, no pain. He began to rely on it. Begging and pleading your mother to just give him a little more each and every time.
He started to get mean. He threatened your mother’s career. Told her if she didn’t stay be with him and supply him with Dilauded he would get her medical license revoked. She pled for mercy but it was to no avail. Your father had become a mean, mean man.
Your poor mother was forced into a marriage, then parenthood. And although she says she loves you more than anything—you know deep down she wishes things were different. And honestly? So do you.
Maybe if your father simply walked that day, or maybe took a different route. Maybe if your mother interned at a different hospital, or maybe chose a different career all together. Maybe, just maybe, things would be different. For you, for your mother, for everyone.
But alas, you’re stuck where you are. With a sheepish mother who’s forced to comply to an addict. With a father who’s either in a state of euphoria or bitter rage. With bruises that litter your skin, scars on your wrists, and a heart full of hurt.
Your dissociative episode is cut off by the feeling of a cold palm on your back. You gasp lightly at the ice cold sensation on your skin. “Sorry, I-I saw you w-were zo-zoning out. Class i-is alm-most over.” Tobias sheepishly smiles. “Your hands are so cold.. how are they so cold? I-It’s like ninety degrees in here?!” Your eyebrows furrow in confusion as you take his hand in between yours. Seemingly studying his hand.
You take notice of the medical tape around his middle, pointer and pinky finger. The skin around his nails have obviously been chewed on, a nervous habit perhaps? His palm is freezing compared to your warm skin. Tobias wishes he could feel more than just the pressure of your hand in his. Damn you CIPA.
“O-Oh, it’s a me-medical thing.” Tobias explains, looking down at where your hands still hold his. “Is it bad..?” You ask, your voice softening as you look up at him. Toby could feel his heart thumping in his chest. God, you were so cute and you didn’t even realize it. “D-Don’t worry, I-I’ll be o-okay.” He reassures, smiling softly.
It takes your brain a few seconds to realize you’ve taken his hand hostage. Once you finally do, you quickly let go and place your hands in your lap. “Sorry..” you embarrassedly mumble. Toby’s smile falters as you let go of his hand. Although he couldn’t feel it just knowing you were touching him was enough to make his heart skip a beat.
“It’s alr-right, I-I didn’t m-mind.” He shyly smiles. The entire time Cody has been secretly judging the two of you. Rolling his eyes and turning up his nose at the sight of you two being so friendly. Cody’s not one to let jealous get the best of him—however—he just couldn’t stand you getting between him and his brother.
Finally, the professor dismisses the class. All of the students gathering their things and filing out into the halls. Cody gathers his things, preparing to walk with Tobias down to their next class when suddenly Tobias turns to you and asks “C-Could I w-walk you to your ne-next class?” Cody’s eyebrows furrow in frustration.
“O-Oh! Uhm, sure..” you bashfully smile. Gathering your all your books you sling your bag over your shoulder while Tobias turns to Cody. “I-I’m gonna—” “I heard.” Cody snaps, a little harsher than he meant. Toby’s eyes widen slightly at his tone. “O-Okay..guess I’ll see y-you in class..” Toby scoffs, grabbing his own bag and beginning to walk down the stairs with you.
“I don’t think your brother likes me very much..” you sheepishly say. Toby grimaces slightly at your words, knowing your right. “Cody’s just n-not a pe-people per-erson.” He explains, walking side by side with you down the halls. “He can be k-kinda of a-a douche some t-times, but he m-means well.” Toby tries to reassure.
“I don’t know..he always seems a little tense around me, and he’s always rushing to get rid of me..” You pout. You’ve always hated being unliked. You always did your best to make others like you. Even going out of your way to do things for them just to maybe get on their good side. So, Cody not being fond of you only made you want to try harder to get him to like you.
“Well, I-I’m not.” Tobias says, feeling a rush of confidence flow through him now that the two of you were alone. “I th-think you’re pre-pretty cool..” Toby cranes his head down slightly to make eye contact. Only for you to immediately look away, biting your lower lip to hide a smile. “Thanks..” A comfortable silence falls around you as you continue your way down the hall.
A few moments later the two of you reach your third period. You turn to Tobias, fidgeting with the straps of your bag. “Thanks for walking me to class..” You softly smile. “Y-Yeah, no pro-oblem.” Toby responds, rubbing the back of his neck sheepishly. “W-Would you wanna ha-hang out after school? M-Maybe show me aro-ound the t-town?”
Your eyes light up..and then immediately die down once you remember. “I would love to, but I can’t. Auditions for the show are tonight and I can’t miss them..” You almost pout. Tobias can’t help but find the sight incredibly cute. It helps dampen his disappointment. “N-No, it’s alright. I-I hope it goes w-well!” He says, giving a gentle smile.
“M-Maybe i could co-ome to the au-au-auditions? I could ch-cheer you o-on?” He asks, clearly desperate to see you more. Although, you’re completely fine with that. “Yeah! They’re being held in the auditorium at five—thirty. I hope you can make it.” The air tension between you is thick but sweet, nothing overly charged. But sadly the moment is cut off by other students budding in between you to attend the lecture on time.
The two of you say your goodbyes. You head into the classroom while Toby books it to the other side of the hall to get to his third period in time. Although, even if he’s late it’ll be worth it. Tobias can’t wait to see you later. He just hopes he’ll be able to find the auditorium in time.
Part 3 is here!! I wanna make something clear: reader is NOT meant to be like typical 2020 y/n where she’s all giggly and bashful and all that. She’s the way she is because of the lack of attention and affection she has in her childhood. She’s was left alone with her drug addict father while her mother worked long hours as a nurse. She’s easily embarrassed by the attention Tobias gives her because she’s never received anything like that and she doesn’t know how to react. I just wanted to clear that up so you guys didn’t think I was making reader all cringe and shit
