“Hi umm….” Bailey said looking at Dara. She was unaware that Dara knew who she was. “Is Nate here…sorry. Dr. Kerrigan?” She asked dropping a hand over her swollen belly.
Dara smiles at bailey "yes he is and if he hears you call him Dr.Kerrigan he might freak" she laughs. "Yes Dear hes in Exam Room 1" she peaks in "he has the medial students but he should be done in a few. Are you okay?" She glanced at Bailey, shes been a nurse long enough that when a pregnant woman comes in to always ask if shes okay and if they baby is okay to gauge the protocols needed to take.
Bailey smiled softly. “Honey. Let the kids learn. “ she said shaking her head. “I ate breakfast a little after you left for work. I couldn’t sleep and A was all riled up. So I tried to eat to get them back to sleep.” She explained.
“Young adult female. 22 weeks pregnant with twins. Presenting with tremors and dizziness. Complained of light headed was and slight confusion. I recommend a blood glucose test.”
He rolls his eyes but lets the students present and learn. "Good good" hes glad shes eating he knew how her morning sickness at the start was awful so any food she ate was a step in the right direction, he is surprised with his students. "Good thought, but it's a bit early. What are her risk factors? If she's high-risk examples are BMI >30, previous GDM, PCOS, make sure you ask these questions okay"
, we can do an early screen now, but we will have to repeat it at 24-28 weeks regardless."
“No history of GDM or PCOS in her chart but in general women carrying twins are more likely to have blood sugar imbalances.” Another student piped up. “Her blood sugar came back incredibly low. So we should add some meds to bring it up.” The student said looking at Nate and Bailey shook her head.
“Honey can’t I just have juice or something?”
"Medications to 'bring up' blood sugar aren't standard for acute hypoglycemia. Unless she’s comatose and needs Glucagon or an IV D50 push, we don't 'add meds' to raise sugar. We use the 15-15 Rule: 15 grams of fast-acting carbs (like juice), then recheck in 15 minutes." He looks at bailey and nods "which kind would you like i know the twins are picky about foods and such" he holds her hand
The students all nodded just hanging on every one of his words. Bailey smiled taking his hand. “I want apple juice please.” She grinned. “Oh the babies like that idea too.” She giggled putting his hand on her belly.
"So if a paitent wants a certain juice you'd ask the nurses to get it okay but remember your Etiquette when speaking to the nursing staff and sometimes If the request is for a specific, unusual item, the nurse might ask you as the medical student to explain the rationale, creating a learning opportunity about the patient's condition or treatment plan" he seemed relaxed now which was a difference than when he was dealing with a trauma earlier in his shift. "They're much more active right now huh" he rubs her belly. "Are you behaving for your mother" he talks to her bump
