i have a headcanon where sonic basically raised tails (which is canon as far as iâm aware) but temporarily tried to give him up to vanilla after realizing how dangerous it would be to have a kid as young as tails in life-or-death situations, and believing that vanilla could provide the stability sonic just couldnât given that heâs a teenager and constantly a target for villains (eggman mostly). it didnât last long as tails and sonic were both miserable at being separated and tails came back to be under sonicâs wing, but sonic still feels guilty over not being able to give tails the childhood he deserves. he still lets tails sleep over at vanilla and creamâs though whenever heâs going somewhere he deems too dangerous for tails. sonic sometimes stays at vanillaâs too after being away from home for a while.
another headcanon i have is that tails and sonic have a mix of a brotherly and parent-child relationship due to the parentification of sonic, what with how he raised tails despite having been a child himself, but they donât often acknowledge it. sonic will call tails âlittle buddyâ and rarely âkit/kidâ, and tails mostly refers to sonic by name. when referring to each other though theyâll sometimes say âmy brotherâ, but thatâs the furthest theyâll really get. i think theyâd be too worried about overstepping.
but i also imagine itâs only in highly emotional and distressing moments involving tails that sonic will refer to him as âmy kidââŚ
