Off to England for masters frisbee worlds!!
I’ve checked everything off my list and checked it twice but I still feel so unprepared. Probably because I did everything today before the flight.
I want be so excited but mostly feeling like something is going to wrong. I’m sure it doesn’t help that the last time I went to England it was with my dad. That was last time he traveled internationally and probably one of his last plane trips. There is a cute little bookshop street in London I want to go to but I’m also worried it’s going to make me cry
I've recently learned that escaping enshitification is actually really easy. When I was younger I would use FOSS (free and open source software) because I usually couldn't afford anything else. Back then the paid options were usually significantly better than the unpaid options so when I finally got money I started using the paid stuff and completely forgot that Foss existed.
If you don't know why Foss is awesome its not just that its free. Open source software has a huge set of advantages. Most software is proprietary meaning that its code cannot be viewed by other people. Open source softwares code can be viewed by everyone and people can contribute their own code to make it better. Open source is often more secure than proprietary because more people have more eyes on it and more people have contributed to it's security. Its also easy to know how much privacy you have with every software because you can read the code. No more "trust me bro I'm not harvesting and selling your data" you know if they are collecting and selling because the code is publicly available.
In the last two months I have been switching almost completely to Foss. I was worried at first because when I stopped using Foss over 10 years ago the average Foss software was genuinely worse than the paid proprietary alternative. Thankfully things have really come full circle. 90℅ of the software I have tried in the last 2 months works better than the proprietary alternative and is 100℅ less obnoxious.
So here is a list of every Foss software I have tried and recommend. There is way more than this available. This list is just what I have used and like personally. Anyone can feel free to add and we can turn it into a master list. Please just take these as a place to start and do your own research to see if these softwares will work for your use case before you fully ditch your proprietary software.
Operating systems
Graphene os: android alt. Security and privacy focused. The most secure and private smartphone currently available.
Linux mint: easy to use linux, 100℅ better than windows.
Pop!: The Linux distro you should use if you have nividia hardware and want to play games using said hardware. Very intuitive and easy to use.
Kubuntu: Ubuntu Linux with KDE desktop. This is the linux distro one I am currently using and I don't have any plans to jump ship again. Better than windows and better than Mac. The companion app for your phone makes life soooo easy. Its pretty and easy to customize to a ridiculously granular level. No fucking notes.
Kindle jailbreak- ko reader: use jailbreak to free your kindle from the tyranny of the bezos. It will download ko reader which is a Foss OS that has every fucking feature you always wished kindle had and let's you read whatever the fuck you want, and have whatever the screensaver you want (no more ads!). Soooo fuck amazon and use this. I genuinely cannot recommend it enough.
Linux FOSS: (some available on windows and android as well)
Calibre: Foss desktop eBook library. Packed with features. You will want to use this with koreader to make managing your kindle easy.
Manuscript: skrivner alt. Does absolutely everything I need.
Bitwarden: password manager (use a keepass fork if you want self hosted)
Next cloud: private google drive and cloud alternative that you can self host if you want but it's not required. App available
Proton VPN: to the best of my knowledge it is the only Foss no log VPN you can get. You can pay for higher speeds. App available
Quad9dns: free encrypted DNS provider. App available.
News software:
Use any Foss RSS reader and for the love of god stop getting news from social media. Take control of your feed!
Apps (I only know for android)
Fdroid: great app store to find Foss android apps and download them.
Antennapod: you can get all of your podcasts fetched to one feature rich app via RSS feed. No need to rely on spotify or music steaming services.
Openreads: it's good reads but private and 100℅ stored locally. No amazon, no social media aspect, it just tracks your reading, you can import your good reads but if you want to import from storygraph you have to make a good reads burner account, import to good reads, then import to openreads. The menus Navigation on this one is a bit cumbersome but honestly good reads app is worse.
Newpipe: YouTube frontend that let's you have YouTube subscriptions, watch YouTube in the background, and blocks all ads, without logging in to YouTube. You will want to use this one with a VPN set to Canada (or any other country) so YouTube doesn't keep blocking it in order to force you to sign in. But even with that extra step its worth it for the privacy and the lack of ads.
Proton mail: one of 2 more private gmail alts. But you should note that email cannot be 100℅ anonymous or private.
I think that's it. There are still a lot software varieties I am slowly finding.
LibreOffice is a FOSS Office suite that can handle word docs, spreadsheets, presentations and databases.
I know people get mad at the name, and I understand why, but straight-up I've been using GIMP for 15 years and it's a good solid art program made under the GNU program. It's worth a look.
To add:
Blender is an amazing FOSS suite for 3D modeling and animation, as well as digital sculpting and motion tracking. Pros use it. It’s a staple in game development. It’s what the Academy Award winning film “Flow” was made on. It’s not the bland name alternative to an industry standard; it is an industry standard.
Krita is a fantastic FOSS application for digital painting. Everyone I’ve ever talked to who uses it has loved it to death.
OBS is the absolute go-to choice for screen recording and live streaming. You can use it to record your entire desktop or a specific window, capture audio from multiple sources, and even add overlays, webcam feeds, or transitions to your videos.
VLC Media Player is the best media player, hands down. It’s lightweight, it’s reliable, it supports virtually every audio and video format known to man, and it has built in media conversion and even basic editing. I truly can’t imagine why anyone would use a media player that isn’t this one. It’s just the best there is, easily, no contest.
Audacity is a fantastic multi-track audio editor and recorder. It’s free and it’s good, and podcasters love it for a reason.
And believe it or not, Thunderbird is a really good email client now. I’m not even joking. If you used it back in the day and hated it, please give it another chance, because the glow up is unreal.
Just tacking on that while FOSS is usually free as in costless the term "free" in open-source spaces typically means "non-proprietary". It isn't a bad idea to look into which of these projects accept donations and to donate if you can. Blender is an amazing program. Genuinely I like it better than Maya or 3DSMax and it is struggling to maintain its project because it has gotten so large in its pursuit of giving artists things that are actually needed but very few of those artists are donating on download.
Other projects (LibreWolf browser comes to mind) reject donations specifically because they don't want to be in Blender's position (often these have an ideological pursuit, like LibreWolf and privacy).
If you see a Donate option when you go to download an open-source project please consider giving them something. Anything you can afford. The non-proprietary (i.e. "free") nature of these projects is so important but I'd hate to see the best of them tank because "free" isn't actually "free".

I feel like I took the cowards way out by choosing just roster with kelp instead of practice playing with Molly. There are lots of good reasons for doing so but I’ve been trying to make Molly brown for so long and had kind of given up on making it and turned it down so I wouldn’t have to spend the whole season trying to squeeze my way into the bottom of a team to maybe play a couple of points. It also felt risky to sort of invest in the two year plan when I’m already 32, have started getting more injuries including pulling my hamstring at Molly brown tryouts two years in a row.
But it makes me feel like I gave up on myself. Like oh I’ll just play with the easier team instead of trying to push myself all season. And take the guaranteed small win of getting to play at the us open instead of reaching for the top.
And so I feel bad and like I listened to the pro cons list (that I even missed several important things on, all in favor of Molly brown) instead of going with my gut and betting on myself.
But I’ve already committed to kelp and now it’s too late to do anything else. So now I’m trying to just lean all the way into kelp in an attempt to salvage my own poor decision making. I just really really hate feeling like I made the wrong decision for myself. I can deal with bad things happening to me pretty well, but it’s so so so much worse when it feels like it’s my own fault.
I feel like I need to use my partner as a sounding board less, because he’s less of sounding board and more just tells me what he would do in the situation, which is fine most of the time but not all of the time. He’s like not great in general at recognizing that people making different decisions than he would do are not always making the wrong decision. Like sometimes people value different things so will make different decisions and that will be correct for them
How insane is it to change my flight to go to a frisbee tournament?
I’m currently coming back from Europe on July 12 and stopping in Michigan to visit my mom for two days because my boyfriend has a work conference there. But I would rather fly from Europe to a frisbee tournament in Oregon on Friday July 10th and then fly straight back home from there. If it was just me that’s what I would do.
But then I wouldn’t get to see my mom for those two days and would be leaving my boyfriend for those last two days in Copenhagen. But I’ll still be there for five days and he likes solo travel. I’d also rather go visit my mom for longer later in the summer or early fall and try to coordinate with my brother to go at the same time.
It’s a bit more money to change my flight. But then I get home two and half days earlier, which at the end of a two and a half week long trips is preferred. I do trade two days in Copenhagen for two days of frisbee in Oregon, which I think is what I’d rather do crazy as it sounds. I am then leaving my boyfriend for two days but he will be fine. I will miss seeing his parents during our layover to Michigan and obviously miss out on seeing my mom in Michigan. Plus it feels weird for my boyfriend to be in my hometown without me.
If I was just making solo travel plans I’d just switch and go see my mom for longer later. But there’s other people involved so it’s hard. It’s like fine if I miss the frisbee tournament but also it’s the first competitive one and I want to play and am worried if I don’t play they’ll establish systems without me and then I won’t get to play as much at the next two. And it’s also hard because I turned down a practice player spot on a better team to play for this one so it feels like I really ought to try and maximize my tournament play to make that decision worthwhile
Should I change it?
Change my flight, go to PEC, visit mom later, get home sooner
Keep flight, miss tourney, two more days in CPH, two days in MI, gone for longer

Grief is so weird. I just found myself sobbing because a pen ran low on ink.
It wasn’t working so I open it up and saw that it was low and went oh that’s okay I’m sure my Dad will send me some new ones for my birthday or Christmas. And then I remembered that he was never going to do that again. And most of my presents as a kid were from both parents but you knew which ones actually were from which my parent. And my dad was a big writer, always had a notebook and a pen on him at all times just in case he got a good idea, and he he always encouraged my writing so wanted to make sure I could do the same. And they were some of his favorite pens, but he would get his in black or blue ink but he would always get mine in purple. And he would just get them for me every couple years so I would never run out. But now if want purple pens I will have to get them myself because he’s no longer around to gift them to me and that just makes me sad and just really drives home that he’s not actually here anymore

I speak to you on the phone and will call you tomorrow. 🤦♀️😆
I reevaluate the whole situation.
♑(sun) I avoid the fact that you are going to be able to get the car seat.
♏(rising) I transform you for your time in my mind
I deserve a hug and kiss for my life right here and I will be forever thankful to have it all back and that you can have a wonderful time together and be together forever I will always love and be there to you my dear
I have pulled my hamstring again 😭😭😭😭
I pulled it last year at Molly browns final closed tryouts and again at this years final closed tryouts so maybe I should just stop going to their tryouts (they always end up cutting me anyway).
It was my last tryout at least so now I just have to try and get my hamstring to heal up before masters regionals in four weeks while anxiously awaiting the results of the final tryout.
Molly brown has basically said they don’t have any roster spots but they are looking to take practice players and I don’t know if I would want to do that. They’re one of the top five women’s teams in the country, their coach is basically the best coach in the country and I’ve been trying to make this team on and off for the past ten years and I don’t know if I can turn it down. It would be so fun to get practice at such a high level against that caliber of player all summer. On the other would I even survive that? My hamstring can’t make it through tryouts and my cold briefly came back Saturday after tryouts too.
I also have a roster off from the second team in Denver kelp. Last year they were one spot away from earning a bid to nationals (top 16 teams in the country) but they’re loosing a handful of their top players so idk if they’ll be quite as good this year. They’re should still be pretty good, are going to a couple good tournaments (including the us open which I’ve low-key been dying to play at), and their top seven is pretty on par with Molly (drops off from there) that have coaches but not the caliber of mollys coach.
So I don’t know what I want to do. Molly brown does practice a good bit more, but both teams have the same amount of free weekends.
On the one hand I do want to be the best I can be and I think practicing Molly could help me get there, but tournament experience is also really valuable. And I’m not sure if kelp would ever off me a roster spot if I turn it down this year and idk if even playing with Molly all summer would get me on the team next year. I’m also 32 and idk how much longer I can play super high level frisbee for (see pulled hamstring for exhibit a).
And all this stress may be for naught because they may end up just cutting me outright still
Baby pony!
Mom said my baby pony and you no touchy but we just looked as we walked by. What a cutie pie
I just need MB to tell me if I made their closed tryouts or not so I can then tell KP whether I need another week or can accept their offer right now and then tell all the other teams I’m playing for KP. I just want to have summer schedule known alreadyyyyyy. I hate this waiting game

Expanding my crafting repertoire by learning some darning. Or at least making a little patch with my new mini darning loom.
These pants were in my rag pile as goners and this isn’t really the patch type to fix them but they came out better than anticipated! Truly I wanted to practice the pattern before attempting a repair on the elbow of a sweater that I do like.
Delicious food weekend 😋
Another neighborhood local ice cream place has an “ube-b-baby” with white chocolate Friday night. And then brunch this morning with churro beignets and breakfast Mac and cheese 😋😋😋
