My (SUPER late) application for @patinoszine!
Pelourinho is the oldest historic neighborhood in Salvador.Â
It was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1985. The name Pelourinho was given to the location of the sugar mill that was reserved for the punishment of slaves. It was founded with direct orders from the king of Portugal to build a "fortress city". In a few years, TomĂ© de Souza (founder of the city) built a series of mansions and townhouses, on the top of this wall, all inspired, of course, in Portuguese Baroque architecture and built with native and black slave labor.Â
Today Pelourinho is known as the place that houses the richest Baroque architectural complex in Salvador, it houses more than eight hundred mansions that are transformed into bars, restaurants and inns.Â
Here we find the mixture of races, music and religions, and it has become one of the clearest examples of the cultural mix between Europeans (Portuguese), Africans and Brazilian Natives, a concrete visualization of what Brazilian culture really is. So, if you've never been to (Salvador) Bahia, when you do, you should absolutely visit this wonderful center.Â
Cause when you go to Pelourinho, my friend, you never return ;)
So sorry for not posting earlier, these weeks were kinda weird for me, but I hope you guys still like it!
It was an amazing experience being part of it, along with all those amazing people who got to collaborate as well. It took me about 2 weeks or so to do this one, and it was an amazing way to improve my techniques, as well as giving me the possibility to learn so much about so many wonderful cultures, and a little bit of my own, as well.
Happy Hispanic Heritage Month, yâall!
