To fit all the characters in the narrow 3 bank layout, the design incorporates a smart 3 row system where each key can generate 3 different characters: a lower case, an upper case (by holding the “Gross” key), and a symbol (by holding the “Zeichen” key). To keep typing in either caps or symbols, there is a lever on the left side of the machine which can sustain the two shifted positions.

The type slugs have 3 rows of characters, so each key can type lower case, upper case and a symbol.

Despite the intricate engineering, the foldable Erika is this easy to store and get back to action.

In 1910 Seidel & Naumann produced the first Erika portable typewriter. The first design was a foldable 3 bank typewriter inspired by the "Standard Folding" (later named Corona 3). This design was produced up to 1927 in 4 different models (named 1 to 4).

In the 1910s, Seidel & Naumann was producing the Germania bicycles, the Naumann sewing machines, the Ideal standard typewriters and the portable foldable Erika.

The Klein-Alder is one of the few rare typewriter models employing the thrust-action mechanism invented in 1896 by Wellington Parker Kidder, which places the type-bars in parallel to the table, and they slide directly forward to meet the paper on the platen.
