“Yeah, I know…” Carson sighed, preparing to voice the inevitable. She dropped her hands from her hair, fingers fiddling in her lap. Their food wouldn’t last forever, and obviously a decision had to be made at some point. Apparently that point must be now. She was anxious and worried about what the future holds for them in times like this. “What’s going to happen when our supplies run low? I mean…should we consider getting the mark?”
Seeing Carson look a little distressed, Tyler scooted a little closer to her on the bed to take one of her hands in his. He gave it a reassuring squeeze as he listened. “You’re not going to have to get the mark, Carson,” that much Tyler was sure of. The mark was bad news and he wasn’t subjecting the woman he loved to that. “When we have to get it--if we have to get it--I will.”
“Okay?”
“I know you just wanna do the right thing, but we have to find out the best way to do the right thing for as long as possible.”

“Ty?” Carson called out to him from their bedroom. They were getting ready to go out, and of course Tyler was ready and she, fashionably late. Her distracted mood was owed to the topic weighing heavily on her mind– the demon recruit system. Carson had been avoiding the topic, however the lower their supplies got and with the limited access to more, a decision had to be made. “Why don’t we stay in? I can fix us a meal here instead. Suppose we go to the restaurant and get denied?” It was only a matter of time before effects of the new system trickled down to eateries and the like.
It had been Tyler’s idea to go out. He was surprised that it took this long until she was asking about the chance of getting denied. It was something he had been mulling over for a while. There was a chance that they were going to get denied any point now coming up and they would have to make a decision. “If we get denied, then we can come back here and make something,” Tyler answered, moving to sit on the bed with her. “We might need the food here later.”
“Sometimes you can’t ration things.”
“You say that now, and it’ll go good until someone’s real sick and we’ve used everything.”

“That’s really nice of you. Have we met?”
“Maybe. Do you ever come to A Latté Fun for more than the sick tea?”
“We’ll run out either way.”
“But if we ration, it’ll make our medicine last longer and be able to help people longer.”
“Okay, that sounds nice.”
“Here you are. Hot tea with honey and lemon. It’ll help your throat and the sweetness isn’t bad either.”
“So, we should try to put together something for people that need medications. But aren’t on the bad team. I got extra Tylenol and stuff if anyone needs it.”
“Yeah? And what happens when we run out?”
“I think I’m coming down with something.”
“Let’s get you a hot tea.”

By now her tears had not only stained her cheeks but dampen his shirt as well. Sniffling, louder now she fought to reign in her emotions if only to speak. Admittedly Carson didn’t think this day would ever come. Her arms loosened their grip as she raised her head from Tyler’s chest to look up at him. She had found the fountain of youth while he looked different, but still felt the same in her arms.
“I thought you were– Ruby, um, she never got the chance to let you know I returned, and when your letters stopped…I assumed the worst.” She had never felt more alone. It even got to the point where Carson wished that she had not been sent back, to only suffer this way. Things had been hard enough as is. “You’re here now,–” Carson smiled, determined to live in the moment. “–that’s all that matters.”
When Carson pulled back, Tyler moved a bit as well, allowing enough space between them for him to get a real look at her. Taking her cheeks in his hands he ran his thumbs across them, wiping some tears that his shirt hadn’t caught. With all the time apart, he hated to see her cry.
“I was sailing. I needed to get away.” With Carson here in front of him, Tyler felt differently. “I should have stayed. I would have been here for you and Ruby and been here longer for Finn.” Saying it all aloud weighted down on him. Made it more real. Even though Finn was still here, Tyler knew that his cousin’s days were numbered. He didn’t want to think about it. Instead he nodded, pulling Carson close once more press a kiss to her forehead before pulling back. “We’re both here now.”
“I just… I’m confused on what I’m going to do. Do I raise her with Diederich?”
“That’s an option. It sounds like he’s going to support you.”
“I just… I’m confused on what I’m going to do. Do I raise her with Diederich?”
“You could. It could be good, Kelly. You don’t have to but you could.”
“Right.”
“I only wanted it to try to win back Jorge.”
“Jorge should have been trying to win you back, not the other way around.”

“I don’t want it.”
“I don’t want this kid. Diederich has been excited for her, but I just… I can’t imagine raising a child.”
“You not obligated to want it, Kelly.”
“You’ve been through a lot. This is a lot on top of that.”
If this were a dream, now would be the perfect time for her to wake up. It seemed like the only choice when it came to saving her from the pain of having this fantasy play out. Alas, the down-side to her thinking was that this time around, Tyler was real. This was not part of her wild imagination.
Tentative steps of her own matched his, her eyes never leaving him for fear that if she even blinked Tyler would vanish. Emotion clogged her throat at his confirmation. It was all Carson needed to send her running to him. In her haste, Carson dropped the saucepan onto the armchair as she passed. Her arms wrapped around Tyler’s neck, face burying in his chest. Tightly she gripped onto him unwilling to let go. “You’re he– really here.” A mixture of joy and sadness overwhelmed Carson then, she sniffled, tears sliding down her cheeks.
It didn’t feel real. Tyler couldn’t put his finger on it but it felt impossible that Carson was there. He couldn’t help but doubt it and yet here she was. Looking the exact same as when she Departed. Tyler had grown--gotten older. But Carson? She was the same. She even smelled the same. Tyler had almost forgotten how she smelled. For that he felt guilty. Here she was again and she had been fading from his mind.
Tyler could feel tears burning at the corner of his eyes and he pressed his face against her neck. “It’s me. I’m so glad you’re here. Everything--Everything has fallen apart. I thought I lost everyone.”
