not me
y'know, in a season that heavily revolves around the theme of lestat being abused, assaulted, raped, exploited, sexualized, and objectified by everyone β and not only in explicit, textual ways like with gabriella and magnus but in subtle, minute background details such as the fang gang making a glory hole out of lestat's poster β maybe other characters' assumptions and accusations about whom lestat's slept with β while lestat himself never even confirms any of this, if not denies it β falls within the venn diagram of all of that.
AND the complaints about βLouis was such a better narratorβ or βI miss Louis narratingβ is UGH.
Louis is poetic, introspective, and romanticizes a lot. Thatβs who he is. Lestat isnβt going to tell the story the same way because heβs not Louis.
The entire point of The Vampire Chronicles is that youβre not supposed to get one objective version of events. Youβre supposed to see how each characterβs personality, ego, trauma, and perspective changes the story. Louis tells you how everything felt. Lestat tells you why he did what he did. Neither one is the complete picture on their own.
The whole appeal is finally getting inside Lestatβs head after years of only hearing everyone elseβs opinions about him.
Different doesnβt mean worse. It means weβre finally getting the other side of the story.
I genuinely donβt understand how people can watch Interview with the Vampire and come away acting like Louis is some completely objective narrator. The entire premise is that heβs telling his version of events decades later through the lens of his own trauma, guilt, shame, grief, and resentment. That doesnβt mean heβs lying about everything, it means his perspective is subjective, incomplete, and emotionally filtered.
Thatβs literally what an unreliable narrator is. Itβs someone whose personal biases, emotions, memory, or limited perspective shape the story theyβre telling. Louis himself admits there are things he misremembered, left out, or interpreted differently over time. Heβs revisiting events after years of self-reflection, and even then, heβs still telling his truth, not necessarily the truth.
Thatβs why The Vampire Lestat is so important. It isnβt βretconningβ Louis. Itβs showing the exact same world from Lestatβs perspective. Suddenly you realize there are motives, emotions, and events Louis either couldnβt see or didnβt fully understand because he wasnβt inside Lestatβs head. Thatβs the whole point of having multiple narrators.
And honestly, peopleβs obsession with making Louis a perfect victim and Lestat the literal devil completely misses the complexity of these characters. Lestat did terrible things. Louis did terrible things too. Louis manipulates, withholds, lashes out, and makes choices that hurt people. Heβs not an innocent bystander any more than Lestat is a one-dimensional monster.
These characters are vampires. Theyβre messy, selfish, loving, cruel, traumatized, and capable of incredible tenderness and incredible violence at the same time. Reducing one to βevilβ and the other to βgoodβ strips away everything that makes this story interesting.
You donβt have to excuse Lestatβs actions to acknowledge that Louis is an unreliable narrator. Those two things can be true at the same time.
