I think you can add me to the list of confused Catholics. I guess I have been looking for love in all the wrong places, or setting my bar up to high. In my latest misadventure, I was turned down because my crush was discerning consecrated life. While I should be happy, I mean she chose God, in reality I feel sad. I feel like I should give up looking in the church and just look at the church. Maybe instead, she (the church) will be my answer. What do you think?
Hey Anon,
I know the feeling. My name is down on the “got left for the seminary” list. I spent a long time kicking myself for that, but really the feeling is only natural. It’s human to be sad after a romantic rejection, no matter the reasons behind it. So don’t feel bad for feeling bad. This will turn out for the best, though it may take a while to see how.
I think you’re on the right track by looking to the Church for your answers here. While romantic love is good, we do need to seek God first. Not that you should give up on finding the right person (though that may seem like a good idea right now) but that you should seek first to love God and follow Him. Trust that He will lead you by the right paths, though you may know nothing about it at the time. As G.K. Chesterton wrote, “the riddles of God are more satisfying than the solutions of man.” We don’t always get the answers that we want, but we can trust God.
