Canadian-born artist Jean Paul Riopelle was a member of the Automatistes, a movement founded by his mentor Paul-Émile Borduas, who were known for their spontaneous method of painting which drew heavily on the subconscious as a source. His painting ‘Baubesse’ is an prime example of the thick layers of pigment, applied with a trowel, that became a hallmark of his work.

Belfast-born, Brooklyn-based artist Oliver Jeffers is best known by many as the author / illustrator of his beloved series of children’s picture books, but his artwork ranges broadly across many mediums and interests  His ‘dipped’ series explores the effect that time has on memory, with portraits of subjects that have experienced death at close hand that are ‘completed’ only when they have been partially submerged in enamel in front of a select group of witnesses, who become the only people to ever see the actual image.  At the same time, hand-written transcripts of conversations held with the subjects are placed on floor to catch the drips from the painting, obscuring the text and becoming part of the finished piece:  www.oliverjeffers.com

The Hoppa! Bar in Amsterdam, which serves 45 locally brewed beers, was commissioned by IQ Creative to fit within a small 460sf space within the historic Odeon building, which was itself once a brewery.  Original details such as the painted ceiling panels are complimented by a newly installed back bar wall tiled in authentic Dutch tile, featuring traditional integrated beer taps and 28 personalized 64oz. growlers that represent short-term memberships that come with 12 free refills for a 750 euro fee.  Dutch design practice Concrete added thoughtful, sophisticated elements throughout, and then enlivened the experience by covering the lower walls with a shock of color:  www.concreteamsterdam.nl

Amateur photographer Arlin Goss captures the essence of the 14th century castle village of Mesta, one of the best preserved on the Greek island of Chios. Japanese-born, New York-based Katsumi Hayakawa's 'Reflective Element 1', from the exhibit entitled 'Void and Solid: a new way of worldmaking' at the Yusto/Giner Gallery in Màlaga, Spain. The artist presented a series of floating paper sculptures that preserved the delicacy of the medium while exploring the impact of architectural density in modern cities.
