i'm not gonna post this on the tag bc it feels performative (for me personally, but no hate to ppl who do otherwise). however, i'd like to make my opinion known to anyone who cares enough to open my blog. think of it as a disclaimer or a warning
i tried to give noah the benefit of the doubt, but at last his behavior has disgusted me to the point of no return. i don't support his actions, nor do i share his values. mocking genocide victims is a new low

can you speak more on your experience becoming a byler cos this always fascinates me, especially when it's people who were once milevens thanks!
absolutely, i love talking about this lol
so i watched stranger things 1 when it came out in 2016 & i was 12. my media literacy wasn't great at the time, and like most people i liked mike and el's little romance. but i did think their kiss came way too fast and kind of out of nowhere. wasn't a fan of that. i thought it would've been better if they didn't get to kiss and made both the audience and mike and el wait. and i was like "uhhh how does she even know what a kiss is" but whatever
then s2 came out, i was 13. i LOVED mike and will's relationship, maybe even more than i liked mike and el's. when mike grabbed wills hand i VIVIDLY remember thinking "they would be such a good couple, but they'd never do that. oh well!". at this point in my life i was realizing my sexuality and was super into queer media. i say that just so you know i was receptive to queer representation and enjoyed it. but to me at that time, i saw stranger things for the massive success it was, famous enough that they'd never have a main character be queer. it just wasn't a thought in my mind that it could ever happen.
i loved the snowball scene and thought mike and el were super cute. i remember thinking "wow their bond must be so deep and they take each other very seriously. it's them against the world"
i was 15 and BEYOND pissed when s3 came out and it was clear mike and el were reduced to comedly relief. i wanted their relationship to be lovable like it was in s2. i hated how mike became so unlikable when he was with el when he was previously shown to be so loyal and caring. and above all, i hated how it was like mike and will's relationship in 2 never happened. i remember thinking "wtf mike?? do you not remember how protective you were of him before?? how close you were??" at the time i thought it was bad writing and it honestly turned me off of s3 and i didn't finish it for like 2 years.
when i finally did i was a bit confused. i remember watching the rain fight and thinking "wow that felt more like a breakup than mike and el's actual breakup" it just struck me how sad it was compared to the breakup. but my heteronormativity towards stranger things was so strong that i didn't even clock will being gay until someone pointed it out for me. and i definitely didn't clock that will was in love with mike. i remember noticing how mike and will were always together and positioned next to each other like jancy and lumax were. but for some reason, and i really don't know why, i just didn't really absorb it.
what really surprised me was the s3 finale, like the final goodbye scenes. during mike and will's i saw mikes reaction to will saying "not possible" and i was like.....hm. he sure seems happy. but whatever
mike and el's goodbye scene just confused me. i didn't understand why mike acted like he didn't know what she was talking about when he spent all season trying to say i love you, i didn't understand why mike didn't close his eyes or kiss her back when he spent all season trying to say i love you, i didn't understand why el walked away and winced, i didn't understand why mike looked like that when she walked away AFTER HE SPENT ALL SEASON TRYING TO SAY I LOVE YOU, and i didn't understand why the music sounded so happy as if NONE OF IT HAPPENED. and when mike hugged karen i was like, why does he look like he just realized something??? wtf is happening???
i didn't realize there was any romance between mike and will until s4. actually, i heard people saying will was gay and in love with mike and i was like "pshh no way". then i saw the trailer where el says will likes someone and i was like "oh my god they did make him in love with mike". but again, for some strange reason, i felt like it was a decision made solely for s4. VERY stupid of me.
here i go more in depth about my specific reactions to s4 scenes but theres one i didn't mention and it's the way mike looks will up and down when he says "cool". i was like "uhh that was kinda flirty..."
but i finished vol 1 thinking about byler a little more. i heard there was a masterdoc about them so i read it, and for the first bit of it i didn't really believe any of it. then i saw the eyewitness parallel and i was like HHHHWHAAAAAAAT???????????????????? i VIVIDLY remember thinking "how is this possible?? didn't this come out of nowh--" and then it ALL hit me in the face. my jaw literally dropped. it's like i rewatched all of st in 3 seconds and everything made sense. the eyewitness parallel finally made me accept the writers would have gay characters and romance, and that was all it took. i never went back. mike and will's bond in s2, the decline of mike and el's relationship, mike and will's tension in s3, mikes reaction to not possible, mike reaction to el saying i love you, all of it made sense. at that point i was like 17 and my media literacy and love/skill for writing had grown a lot. the very first tiktok i made about byler was about how it doesn't make sense for the writers to build this up for so long just for it not to go anywhere, because it doesn't at all. and things just grew from there. i bled blue and yellow and i still do!
it was almost entirely heteronormativity keeping me from seeing byler earlier, so i talk about that a lot. because once you remove that, EVERYTHING makes perfect sense
MIKE AND EL'S RELATIONSHIP IN SEASON 3 WAS COMIC RELIEF. It was not taken seriously AT ALL.
"blank makes you crazy" was silly. "They should take it more seriously" and they said "okay": "i say it this is ridiculous what is this you know what i think of you" because the situation doesn't change if the tone does, and that was them calling that they told the story in a silly way but it wasn't "nervous boy with his crush" funny it was "can't say i love you" funny, which is not actually the same.
They were comic relief. Fight? "Give him the medicine." Breakup? "I dump your ass". Get back together? "Wait so something that literally says I'm sorry?" Don't get back together? "I should be with my species more." Tell her you love her "blank makes you crazy. old people say it to each other sometimes."
There was no payoff even then because we weren't INTENDED to be invested. They did the same in season 3 and tried to trick us into thinking a plotline was wrapped up that was never the focus of the season. They placed it in the final episode to make it feel like the climax but it wasn't. Whenever I see the fight in season 4, I don't watch him telling her he loves her to calm down and I never did. I watch her reuniting with Hopper. Or maybe her leaving Brenner. Because that is the ACTUAL bookend. They pretend it's literal to distract you. They say "he couldn't tell her he loved her then he could" but it was actually "she didn't believe that she was lovable and then she left her abuser even when he told her he loved her because she doesn't need it anymore". It wasn't "he couldn't tell her he loved her then he could". It was "he didn't know why he was acting the way he was and now he does. He knows himself."
Something something Finn something something "he's figuring out how he views himself and his relationships"
this should have been it's own post not a rb atp but it's whatever.

The fact that Jonathan is involved/will be in the scene is whatβs getting me the most. Itβs the fact that the writers/creators have decided and are showing us that itβs important we view the evolution of Byler through the lens of an outside observer aka Jonathan. A Miwi flashback in and of itself wouldnβt be too threatening to Milkvans and the homophobic GA, bc they could just say βOh itβs a flashback of Mike and Willβs friendship, overly romanticized bc itβs from Willβs POV.β But the fact that Jonathan is there tells us that we are meant to be watching some kind of change occur between Byler from an outside and objective perspective. A change in friendship dynamic doesnβt seem like enough of a reason to warrant needing to give us an outsiderβs view, but you know what does? The evolution of friendship slowly turning into romance.
or, the post where I speculate about Finn's playlist STurn being a series of hints for Mike's arc in season 5 and how this brings us to Byler endgame in the finale!! This is all speculation for fun, I don't know if it was intended to be a playlist about byler but there are so many things that make me think so and we have too much free time before season 5 so why not talk about it....
WARNING: It's gonna be long lol
Reasons why I think this playlist is about st5:
The name, obviously with ST in it but it also can be used as a play of words with '' turn around look at what you see '' or ST urn which is pretty clever if it's intentional, and I think Finn writes songs pretty often so he would play with words like this IMO
The third song is called '' After the Earthquake '' and the s4 earthquake was pretty important - I also have a theory that there are going to be other earthquakes in season 5 because the two worlds are merging with each other
It seems Finn has a habit of making playlists for the characters he plays and leaving them public
The songs were added 2 weeks ago and this means he was actively filming when he decided to make that
Reasons why I think this playlist is related to Will specifically:
Many of the songs and their meanings make more sense for a queer storyline, and Mike can only have that with Will
The cover of the Beatles song has them all with the same haircut as Will that everybody makes fun of online and I think he may have put it because of that also, I would tbh
The possible ''Turn around and look at what you see'' was sung before the scene in season 3 where Mike and Will are sharing a sweet moment about d&d and there were already plenty of speculations in the byler fandom about how that song was choosen for them... - Rhymes that keep their secrets / Will unfold behind the clouds / And there upon a rainbow / Is the answer to a neverending story
The last song is the same last song in the playlist that was made for Will by the writers during season 2 ... so many ''coincidences''
Now let's start to see what I can theorize from the lyrics of some of these songs...
I already made posts about some of the songs, and it's pretty clear that some of the songs have an obvious queer meaning like the song number 7 :
"Don't ask me to explain" by Of Montreal was written by a bisexual person and has clear hints about sexuality and I quote from that site
Β« The lyrics of "Don't Ask Me to Explain" by of Montreal present a complex and multilayered exploration of identity, sexuality, and social norms. The singer of the song struggles to connect with others and feel authentic in their own skin. They question whether it's possible to truly know someone else and love them when they are hiding parts of themselves. The line "Who are you hiding you from, across the table with a penny in each eye?" suggests that the person they are speaking to is not being truthful or open with them, and they are struggling to understand why. The singer also shares their own desires and fears, confessing that they would like to marry all of their close friends and live in a big house by the sea. This unconventional desire goes against societal norms and expectations, which is reinforced by the line "I'd really like to, but I'm just too shy". The singer is torn between their desires and the fear of social rejection and judgment. The line "Who will be watching my body when I sleep? Who will I believe in?" indicates a sense of vulnerability and a lack of trust towards others. The chorus repeats throughout the song, serving as a refrain and emphasizing the singer's refusal to explain or justify themselves to others. They feel that they should not be forced to explain or apologize for their desires, beliefs, or identity. Overall, "Don't Ask Me to Explain" is a powerful and introspective song that invites the listener to reflect on their own struggles with authenticity, identity, and societal expectations. Β»
I think this song fits perfectly for my interpretation of Mike as he doesn't yet know that Will is not being honest with him, and he doesn't get why Will is lying, he can't fully fall for him before he knows the secrets Will is hiding, he's also afraid of going against social norms, but the song to me seems to talk about someone that fights against it and overcomes these fears and wants to be authentic to themselves and that's why they are asking the other person to do the same, I think it conveys a longing feeling like the person wants to let themselves fall for this other person, but the other person is hiding themselves, and they want both of them to be honest about their feelings. In my opinion this song is about Mike wanting to love Will but waiting for him to be honest before that can happen, because he can't fall in love consciously if he doesn't even know it's a possibility- that's why he needs to discover the lie about the painting, but most of all Will must confess his feelings!!!
Here's the line to line meaning, and I'll add byler context lol obviously you have to adapt to the situation, there is not a literal correspondence like I said for the other analysis of the playlists, it's just the general meaning because the songs were not made for byler but in another context, so the details can't be perfect - you just adapt the general meaning with what fits when you choose songs for it:
How will I ever know you enough to love you
If you're hiding who you are?
Don't ask me to explain.
Who are you hiding you from,
Across the table with a penny in each eye?
Don't ask me to explain.
Will must be honest with Mike about who he is and his feelings so that byler can happen, the line about someone hiding from them when they are sitting across the table from them so they can look at them face to face makes me think about the fact that Will in the van lied to Mike to his face directly.
I'd like to marry all of my close friends,
And live in a big house together by an angry sea
in the context of byler this can be interpreted as in Mike's desire to live with Will that's one of his closest friends and live together even if outside the sea of ''normal'' people are angry at them, they are sheltered in the house
Am I the devil's marbles, don't move on without me
Who will be watching my body when I sleep? Who will I believe in? How am I supposed to let it show when I don't even know?
I think in this part the singer is showing that even if they want this person and love them, they are disrupting the peace with their request to be honest and even if they don't want them to move on they are saying that they can't show their love when they don't even know how they feel themselves, could be applied to both Mike & Will
Besides, I don't want to be the one whose coming out first,
I'd really like to, but I'm just too shy
Don't ask me to explain
The singer is asking the other person to ''come out first'' because they are too shy/scared to do it first, obviously it's about asking the other person to come out with their real feelings, but it's clearly a queer phrasing about the ''coming out'' because the song if talking about a queer relationship since the person that wrote it is bi I think we can say that with 97% of probability lol
It's so easy to lie to myself
And pretend that I could love you, but I can't
I think this part is about how the singer wants in part to just love them and let go of the need to make the other person be honest, but they can't be truly themselves and be in real love unless both of them are honest, so ''they can't'' just let go of this need, and they keep asking the other person to take that step with them!
But let's go back, the first song in the playlist is Ballad of a Texas King by Cut Worms and this song fits Mike's fear of the unknown and the changes he will go through in season 5 - his personal arc even not counting Will in the equation, Mike is scared of things changing around him... (this song also briefly mentions California)
As the writer of the song said in his personal site:
On βBallad of a Texas Kingβ Clarke sings, βHey kid come alongβ¦ something is wrongβ¦ I believe you knowβ¦ All this to say, only one way that this can goβ¦β Itβs as if heβs reaching out to his younger self, letting him know the changes are inevitable. How do we hang on to a dream? How do we not lose ourselves in a world that is lost? The only way out of a nightmare is to keep going.
The second song is the one with the cover that reminds us of Will lmao - '' What you're doing to me'' by the Beatles
This song is in the same context as the others about asking your lover to stop lying so you can be with them - Mike asking Will in this context, Mike is his true love
Song number 3 is "After the earthquake" by Alvvays and I found this online that it's interesting not only for the references to someone in a coma and the earthquake but metaphorically it could be applied to Mike finding out about the painting lie and his world being turned upside down, maybe by a fight with Will that doesn't get resolved because something happens before it can be...
Song number 4 is Promises I've Made by Emitt Rhodes and I think this could be Mike still pining after Will even after they have their fight, if the fight happens before the time jump maybe he spends one year with Will trying to distance himself/or just not trying anything because he thinks there's no point and Mike trying to repress all his feelings for Will, or alternatively we can say he already started this process after season 3, and he's trying to just repress it but can't
pretty self explanatory, Mike is trying to repress his sexual feelings for Will and trying to convince himself ''it's just a phase'' and he's not queer... personally I feel like the song IS about queerness because it's from 1982 and there's a literal man dressed as a woman, like.... pls
Song number 6 is ''The Better side'' by Audiotree and The Slaps and I couldn't find the text online so I have transcribed it myself but if there's some lyric wrong let me know because I wasn't sure for some words:
You're never gonna see the sun
you're never gonna see me run
and I say oh baby don't make me stay out too late
imma go into sleep I know you'd cry
and I'm trying to keep you by my warmth
You're never gonna see my eyes
You're coloring other skies you want to
and I say Oh baby don't make me do the falling when I'm drinking of you
you're on the better side
you're always the better one for me
I'm trying staying alive, keep my head on the better side when you're far away and you're horny as hell
and you're all that I need
I'm not gonna miss you anymore
I interpret this as Mike pining for Will again and how Will is the better choice for him and the one that he truly needs
Song number 8 is ''What do you want me to do?'' by Pointed Sticks
This song makes me think about Mike & El and I think it could be sort of a break up song between them although I don't think it's literal but more ''angry after a break up scene - vibes''
Another song that I think is about Mike x El is ''Substitute'' by The Who, song number 9 :
I interpret this song as a guy that tried to change himself for the girl he likes but he's never enough for her even changing everything about himself - so not a real relationship based on knowing each other deeply and he's tired of pretending to be someone else
Song number 10 is ''The Rebel Kind'' by Modernettes
I think this song is about someone embracing ''being different'' and wanting to stick with the ''rebel'' kind, the people that rebel to society's standards and expectations, Mike wants to be part of that no matter what happens
Song number 11 '' Block Rockin' Beats'' by The Chemical brothers... is almost without words but it's funny to me how you could put duffers instead of chemical there lol anyway it could be just a vibe song to prepare for the finale, maybe something action packed happens and this song is good for a fight scene...
right before the ending that as we said before is the same song that Will's playlist had at the end... song number 12 is a love song, a winning the love of your life song!!!
''Just what I needed'' by The Cars has the vibe of a song you would hear at the end of the movie right after the main couple finally gets together and they are happy!

I want to start this post by making it clear that I do NOT approve of any kind of harassment towards ANY of these people, I will be blocking and calling out anybody that I see doing that
I do not want you to flood them with hateful anons, doxx or threaten their lives - that is not ok and it shouldn't be the norm in any case, in dyersfilms case specifically she is a lesbian which means all of this comes probably from internalized homophobia that she has gathered on her growing up which doesn't excuse these things but it's something that has to be kept in mind too -
I'm posting these after thinking about it for two reasons:
first of all I'm tired of people using homophobic slurs against characters trying to justify it with the idea that "they aren't real so it's ok" and second because I've got TONS of anons with byler doubt these days because of the things she posts on her cc and I want y'all to know that she has an enormous bias against Will as a character and Bylers, she adds her own narrative to the leaks she gets to spite us and go against Will in any case
you should take everything she says with doubt
and also just BLOCK her if you don't like her - again, do not make accounts to target her, do not dox or harass. That is foul to me and I do not approve no matter all of the shit she did and said.
As I was saying I think people in fandom spaces are becoming too comfortable calling gay characters homophobic slurs just because they hate them - and we know these people are not joking about him in a positive way like one of us may do if we queer people reclaim the terms and joke around in our own fandom, they are using the slurs with negative connotations to hate on him and I think that's not okay and that's something they should think about and change about how they approach fandoms and characters because the people reading these things are real queer people, often even very young.
Also shipping two young boys in a TV SHOW is inherently sexual only because they would be gay in her mind and to me this is a sign of internalized homophobia that she hasn't unpacked yet, gay kids exist and are valid.
