Ok so, I just remembered how people in the comments of a tiktok video were being assholes, and I want to rant now :3
The video showed two wheelchair users at a train(?), who had just arrived to their stop to find nobody was there with a ramp so they could leave the train. One of them blocked the door so it wouldn't close, and this lasted for 15 minutes. The train was stopped for said 15 minutes. There was a button by the door, that said that it'd contact the driver when pressed. It didn't. People offered to go find the driver, and they came back with the news that there were no people in the platform to put the ramp. In the end, passengers had to go out, and place the ramp themselves, before the train could carry on. The wheelchair users had warned they were coming, and asked to have the ramp put there so they could get down. The platform turned out to have workers, they all just ran away because they'd never encountered the situation in which they needed to do this simple task.
Because of the workers' negligence, the train was forced to stop for 15 minutes.
Everyone's comments?
"Why did they block the doors and stop the train? So selfish" Selfish were workers who refused to do their job.
"What if someone had needed to get to their stop urgently? They shouldn't have stopped the train" It wasn't the disabled people's fault, it was the workers who were negligent.
"Why didn't they just wheel themselves down those steps?" They shouldn't have to risk their (expensive) chairs just because people didn't do what they were paid to do.
"If I had been in that train I would've been pissed, how dare you stop it" And you probably wouldn't have even thought about fixing the problem yourself, would you?
"Entitled assholes" Ok I'll leave you stranded in a train with everyone who could help you get down outright refusing to. Let's see who's an entitled asshole now.
If someone fights for accessibility, as much as it might be a bother for you, you do not have the right to be mad at them. If someone fights for accessibility, it is exclusively the fault of a world catered exclusively for able-bodied people.
So next time you think, "hey the consequences of these disabled people fighting for their rights bother me", instead of blaming them for this, help them solve the issue. This way, next time they will not have to fight at all.
Able bodied people, go out and fight for a fucking accessible world if you're not an asshole.
[ Able-bodied people are encouraged to reblog this post, but try not to derail ]
āWhat if someone had needed to get to their stop urgently?ā What if the fucking disabled people had needed to get to their stop urgently?????
I did this in a limited way on DC metro back in the day. On crowded days they wouldnt give people enough time to get on and off at a stop. Metro doors dont reopen once they close to a certan point, but if you plant your foot at their base you can hold one side open and they cant move the train until the door closes, so people can get on and off. And if you dont like me doing this, fuck you and metro, your job is to transport humans, not to keep your schedule exactly.
Yesterday my little brother told me something very sweet and touching, that when he was a kid and had nightmares about monsters chasing him or whatever he would be able to end the nightmare by finding me in the dream and I would protect him by fighting off the zombies, or carrying him away. This is adorable, and makes me feel like the greatest older sibling in the world, but the hilarious thing is that when I was a kid I had nightmares of needing to save him from zombies and such. so many dreams where he was in trouble and I needed to save him. Like my nightmares began where his ended. Low key I think he mastered the ability to psychically transfer his nightmare to me as a child and I'm kind of annoyed with him.
You two were having an ongoing portal fantasy adventure together in your dreams and wrote the whole thing off as nightmares
I did this for a friend of mine in college. She was having a reoccurring nightmare about being chased by something or other, and I told her "Look, I'm a big guy and know enough to show up and improvise anything from cannons, to swords, to guns to nukes, and I guarantee the next time this fucking thing shows up in your dream I am coming to kick its ass"
It worked. No more nightmares.
Is there any way you can get your actual exam back and argue for a few points with the professor? š«£
ough. maybe? i would need literally just two more questions right. that concept makes me feel like such a jerk though š
Just saw your other post, you should definitely ask and explain why, a 4.0 is nothing to sneeze at, and professors are humans.
DO NOT SUPPORT SALVATION ARMYĀ
I can back this up. It isnāt only their shelters.
I have a family friend who worked at our local Salvation Army headquarters as a a secretary. This particular office took all the Christmas donations for children in need, put them in a warehouse, and on a designated day the staff and their friends picked through them all, taking whatever they wanted. She saw people hauling away bikes donated for specific families. Some local children had hundreds of dollars of gifts donated in their name, and on Christmas they received three cheap things, items likely not even from the person who sponsored them.
My friend quit, and Iāve not given them a dime of my money since then.
Do not give to the Salvation Army.
Do Not. Give. To. Salvation. Army
My turn.
Iām a wildfire and disaster logistics specialist.
I deal with a lot of agencies who provide disaster relief.
I used to say the Salvation Armyās disaster services were the one (literally the ONE) good thing they did.
They would come in, set up a canteen trailer, make and pass out hot coffee and donated food in a disaster, usually being one of the first agencies to get there and the last to leave.
Then I found out.
Every time they did this, regardless of if they were actually invited or deployed by the agency in charge (usually FEMA, sometimes others) they would SELF-DEPLOY. Meanjng they would just show up. Ok. Thatās not TOO bad, sometimes agencies have to take initiative and get there before the red tape is sorted out. BUT. They, after they left at the end of the incident, they would send FEMA or the host agency a BILL. They used one or two paid employees (usually the driver of the truck and a supervisor); and many VOLUNTEERS, but they would bill for EVERYONEās Labor at standard federal rates. They would bill for the food they distributed even though it was all donated by another agency or private parties. They would bill for the coffee they made and the supplies. Except they would use electricity from the shelter location, water from donations or from the shelter, and in many cases, they would get the coffee and industrial filters DONATED, but bill for them at retail prices.
Donāt FUCKING give to the Salvation Army.
The Salvation Army is also ass to the workers. A good number of people join it, naively thinking that itās doing good, and end up leaving cynical and beaten down. The management is hostile, if not outright abusive, and demand some ridiculous hours of it lower to mid-level staff. Donāt support these people.
Unsettling update
Find better local charities and shelters and give to them instead!
Also just for even more horrific context on the original twitter thread?
Salvation Army reached out to Milknmuffins and asked what shelter sheās at with the promise to address the abuse in it. Sheā¦ended up saying where she was. She was thrown out onto the street. Itās also all on Twitter.
They invited her to a personal talk so she could explain the situation in person.
And then they threatened her with a screenshot of a rape-threat made supposedly by her:
And then threw her out into the street while claiming she broke house rules that
So yeah, the Salvation Army is a bunch of entitled assholes that will treat the most vulnerable like shit if they dare try to do anything that makes them look bad
TheĀ āFuck Salvation Armyā posts are making the rounds again, so conisder this your reminder: Do. Not. Give. These. Assholes. A. Single. Fucking. Penny.
Do not support them in any way, shape, or form.
āTis the season to say FUCK the Salvation Army.
I knew they were horrible but I didnāt realize they were that bad

I have never once wished for Tolkien to still be alive as much as I do in this moment
This is the most amazing thing I've ever seen
Anone know why I cant see the original post?
this 100% could just be because there's so many versions of greek myths and I just heard it different growing up, but tbh I never really understood why the story of icarus is supposed to be about hubris and all that. it didn't seem like he was proud of his (gifted) wings, like he thought he'd be invulnerable like a god. it seemed more like a kid chasing a ball into the street without thinking and getting hit by a car. he didn't REALIZE how high he'd gone and he couldn't hear his father yelling after him. he'd been trapped underground for years, he was just happy and playing around? like, again, if I saw a kid have a lapse in judgment and get hit by a car, I wouldn't blame the kid?? they didn't know that would happen to them. so why blame icarus?
At least the way I always understood it, Icarus was not a 6 year old running into the street. He was a teenager/young adult who was specifically told what would happen. He then decided that he was special and he was going to do it anyways. That's just my personal interpretation of it at least.
but that ignores the context of him being trapped underground for years š he hadn't seen the sun in so long. it doesn't seem like he thinks he's special, or that he's disobeying his father on purpose, it seems like he's caught up in the euphoria of the moment and doesn't notice what's going on until it's too late
Might also b bad way of pointing out that the universe doesn't care about how happy you are or how excited and not paying attention after being freed, it will still kill you dead
Reblog so she lives forever.
I fucking LOVE the way people act when they love a sport and watch a beginner succeed at it. It reminds me of the first time I went surfing, I'd been trying for an hour to get my balance and when I finally managed to stand up and ride a wave in literally every surfer on the beach was like
The first time I managed to get up and stay up on waterskis, my dad (who was driving the boat) was so excited that he forgot to watch where he was going and ran over a buoy.
WEAR A GODDAMN HELMET.
Yeah we once threw a flaming toaster out into the snow.
I am begging yāall to get fire extinguishers in your houses. They make little ones specifically for residential use; cost is like, $30. Please.
https://www.lowes.com/pl/Fire-extinguishers-Fire-safety-Electrical/4294644946
it's important to note that there are 5 types of fire extinguishers & each must be used exclusively for the class of fire they're designed for - using the wrong extinguisher can be dangerous. here's a helpful diagram:
& you might think they look intimidating, but it's very easy to use a fire extinguisher:
pull the safety pin (usually yellow) out of the handle.
aim the hose at the base of the fire.
squeeze the handle to discharge.
do consider acquiring a fire blanket for your kitchen, too! they're (generally) more affordable than extinguishers & again, easy to use: you simply take the blanket out of its case, hold it by the tabs & place it carefully over the flames.
Fire extinguishers can also have letter categorization instead, where they're labeled as A (dry fuels like fabric, paper, wood, etc), B (flammable liquids, like grease and gasoline), C (electrical fires), D (flammable metals, usually only in labs), or K (large kitchen fires, usually only in industrial and commercial kitchens).
Multipurpose fire extinguishers can have multiple labels and are safe to use for all types of fires covered under those categories; I have a dry chemical A-B-C extinguisher so I can use it for any small fire aside from flammable metals. If you have multiple fire extinguishers in your home, you may have a B-C one for your kitchen.
there should be a fire extinguisher that works for everything idc idc whay do you mean i technically need at least 2 fire extinguishers jic????
Technically speaking, that's what a multipurpose ABC extinguisher is for. It covers pretty much any fire that is likely to occur in your home. Some people just have more specialized extinguishers for a lot of reasons (price, availability, whatbwas already in their home, etc) or multiple extinguishers that are better suited to specific things.
Having more than one extinguisher in your home can be really helpful regardless in case a fire actually makes one of them inaccessible, like cutting your access to the room it's in, and having one in the kitchen specifically for kitchen fires can make a huge difference when you don't have to run across the house to put out a growing fire.
Yeah. I have one in the kitchen, one in the bedroom, and one in the car.

Y'all should Google the article, itās actually pretty neat. Basically, the Aldabra Atoll was once inhabited by the Aldabra Rail, a flightless species of bird that had diverged from the flying White-Throated Rail when a section of the population landed there and found they had no natural predators. However, the Atoll occasionally gets completely submerged, and all of the flightless Aldabra rails were wiped out. But then, after the Atoll re-emerged, a bunch of the EXACT SAME species of flying White Throated Rail decided to settle there again, and immediately proceeded to evolve into flightless birds AGAIN.
I'm so enamoured with this man
That's not your man that's the spirit of a Victorian beat cop who was bound to the lantern by dark magic and is now possessing a body to return to life
Godsdamit Vimes, let the girlfriend sleep.
Happy July 4th, everyone, and good luck to the UK voters out there!
Wow it's Year 11 of doing these!! Here's the AO3 link to the past 10 years, and here's the tumblr link.
Reminder that this is a long game -- some of the judges making decisions were appointed back in the 80s. Many of the cases that were decided this round were from Trump's term. So it's going to take long-term, consistent voting over a decade to start tipping things in the other direction. (Which I talked about in 2018 re: Trump shenanigans and 2022 re: Dobbs).
A lot has been done by the Biden administration (I'm assuming most folks have seen this post by boreal-sea with their very helpful sources), and much of that will be overturned by Trump, especially if he gets the Senate, and especially now that he would have a blank check for anything "official". So let's make sure that doesn't happen.
And even if Trump does get elected, your decisions down-ballot might effect control of the House or Senate, or might make it easier to vote next time, plus the whole plethora of state and local issues. It's Republican state attorney generals who are challenging climate regulations, for example.
Plus, when you really get down to it, only one of the candidates plans on pardoning himself and all his friends if he wins, and attacking the government if he loses. Maybe that guy shouldn't be the President.
If you're new to voting, remember to check voter registration deadlines! I'm a permanent vote-by-mail voter and it's so nice. :)
