Alejandro Durán’s “Washed Up.”
Mexican artist Alejandro Durán uses plastic that he finds along the coast of Sian Ka’an, Mexico’s largest federally protected nature reserve, to create outdoors installations in a series he calls “Washed Up” to bring attention to pollution.
Durán, who is now based out of New York City, has identified waste products from over 50 nations from six continents during the course of creating “Washed Up” which finds him arranging the waste by color in either floral or fauna patterns and often as if the pieces of trash had been washed ashore by the waves naturally. Though the installations are colorful and gorgeous they mirror the resulting horrors of the world’s consumer driven mindset. Durán wants viewers of this photographic series to realize that the consequences of pollution reach far beyond what we normally realize.

Known as pacifists, Buddhists violent acts against the Rohingya minority are contradicting their teachings. So, we were wondering, can Buddhism be violent?
A silent protest in Love Park, downtown Philadelphia orchestrated by performance artists protesting the murder of Michael Brown in Ferguson. The onslaught of passerby’s wanting to take photos with the statue exemplifies the disconnect in American society. Simply frame out the dead body, and it doesn’t exist.
Here are some observations by one of the artists involved in the event:
I don’t know who any of these folks are.
They were tourists I presume.
But I heard most of what everything they said. A few lines in particular stood out. There’s one guy not featured in the photos. His friends were trying to get him to join the picture but he couldn’t take his eyes off the body.
“Something about this doesn’t feel right. I’m going to sit this one out, guys.” “Com’on man… he’s already dead.”
(Laughs.)
There were a billion little quips I heard today. Some broke my heart. Some restored my faith in humanity. There was an older white couple who wanted to take a picture under the statue.
The older gentleman: “Why do they have to always have to shove their politics down our throats.” Older woman: “They’re black kids, honey. They don’t have anything better to do.”
One woman even stepped over the body to get her picture. But as luck would have it the wind blew the caution tape and it got tangle around her foot. She had to stop and take the tape off. She still took her photo.
There was a guy who yelled at us… “We need more dead like them. Yay for the white man!”
“One young guy just cried and then gave me a hug and said ‘thank you. It’s nice to know SOMEBODY sees me.’
I’m just gonna keep reblogging this because this is truly how white America works. Like people have their weddings on plantations, Blackface was and still is a major source of entertainment and the biggest movie of all time was Gone With the Wind. White America will kill Black people and then smile and laugh and enjoy their day it sickens me that we’re treated this way.
wow I’m crying

Project of the Day—Compilations can be great. They give you a window into a record label, someone’s personal taste, or just the general tone of a moment in time. Vinyl Moon does just that, and then presses the selections onto vinyl, so you can keep them until you wear down the grooves.

Amazing Transparent Church in Borgloon, Belgium
The architect group, Gijs Van Vaerenbergh, built this church in Borgloon, Belgium. It doesn’t look like anything special… from certain angles. From other angles, the structure reveals itself to be something else entirely. It consists of 100 layers of stacked steel, that are equidistantly staggered in a way that illusively change in appearance based on where the viewer is standing.

Artist Jim Bachor filled Chicago potholes with mosaics of ice cream, in a project called “Treats in the Streets.”
The cool part- the sturdy mosaics provide a legitimate band aid for the cracked asphalt.
By balancing stones, artist finds peace Michael Grab began exploring the ancient discipline of rock balancing in the summer of 2008 while hiking around Boulder Creek in Boulder, Colorado. It has since become a daily meditative practice for him, and it’s not uncommon for him to draw small crowds of spectators as he creates these meticulous, ephemeral installations.
See more of his incredible photos.
