I dunno why it took me so long to draw Izumi. I love big hair. Hahahaha!

“He did tell me about the terrible things he did trying to catch Uncle Aang, yeah… he’s admitted it and it’s not some secret.” 

His father had always been open about his mistakes, as had his great uncle. They didn’t shame from them. Plus, his mother loved to tease him about some of the stuff he did as a teenager, which made the boy gag a little bit. But, at least his parents weren’t like his grandparents. They sounded like a worse mess than his father’s stories could do justice. 

“He doesn’t talk about Grandma Ursa’s sad stuff that much. Really, Dad only shares happy memories about her. Well, he didn’t tell me any sad stuff until I was like fifteen. I had to figure some stuff out by reading about it because he didn’t want me to be upset, but… when I ask him, he tells me stuff. He never goes into details about… how stuff made him feel or whatever. He just says stuff like ‘it was a different time, even though it wasn’t that long ago’ or stuff like ‘it was hard, but it put me on the right path’ and those kinds of things, pretty vague.”

Kya always told him it was because he was trying to protect us from having to worry about stuff that he used to have to. Tukkuttok was never fully sure other than it was painful for him to talk about. His dad always seemed stressed out, but at the same time he seemed happy. He wasn’t… sulking about the way Ozai seemed to think. His father laughed a lot and smiled frequently. He told jokes and took them for ice cream, or to the beach, or to the theater. He’d cry sometimes watching the shows, but that was one thing his dad would lie about. Tukkuttok was not supposed to bring those kinds of things up. 

“I did ask him once if you loved Grandma Ursa, and he told me he didn’t think so because of how you treated her. My sister said maybe you just never knew how to treat people you love or show people you love them. We never knew because well, we never met you. Kya still won’t meet you.”

“I think sometimes lies to protect people aren’t bad. Like when Uncle Iroh lied about the dragons… we have a pet dragon now, Druk. I don’t know if you ever saw him before. But, I’m glad we have Druk. I’m glad Uncle Iroh lied about that.”

“I don’t know why Grandma Ursa would lie about heritage though… just to make you mad? That seems odd. I guess she wanted to get back at you if you upset her.”

“Of course I loved her.”

He spat the words before he could even think of them–Zuko was still spreading such lies?

It made him sick.

“The only reason that woman is alive is because I loved her.  I gave her everything.  I treated her the way a princess should be treated.  I dedicated years of my life to her.

“And people still want to believe that I wronged her?”

He laughed.

“Iroh didn’t lie to protect the dragons, child.  Don’t let Zuko’s biased view of his Uncle tell you that.  He lied because he saw a chance to seize power from them, and you can’t seize power from something that’s dead.

“Let me guess.  They told you that stupid worthiness spiel that Zuko’s so fond of?  

“Sure.  Fine.  Original firebenders, they can decide who firebends or not.

“Except Iroh found them before his attack on Ba Sing Se.  Certainly sounds worthy to me.  He found them and he forced their secrets out of them on threat of death.

“And do you still? Do you still love her, I mean? My grandma.”

Tukkuttok didn’t know what to make of his grandfather. He was by far the most conflicting person he had ever spoken to. He seemed so… broken. It admittedly made the young man sad.

“And, what about my dad or Aunt Azula? Did you ever love them?”

Zuko would say no. His aunt would laugh at the mere notion. She would tell her nephew he was being ridiculous. She would say that her father was incapable of love.

Tukkuttok looked at his grandfather as if he had five heads. After a moment, the young man simply laughed. It must be a joke, right? Surely, his grandfather was messing with him? He sounded so serious and stern about it and it was just… nonsense.

“Well, Grandpa, if it looks turtle duck, swims like a turtle duck, and quacks like a turtle duck… then, it probably is a turtle duck.” 

Tukkuttok shook his head, folding his arms then over his chest. 

“Plus, if you’re my dad’s father, then you must be a person. Women don’t just have babies out of nowhere, you know.”

Ozai rolled his eyes.

Though, somewhat, he appreciated the bullheaded disregard for philosophy.  Maybe this one was more like him.

“Who says I deserve what you’re trying to give me?

“No one else does.

Voice wavered with despair, disgust, and hatred.

Sure, they had covered it already–but Ozai felt the need to hamner in just how long it’s been. To try to force the boy to understand that seemingly impossible length of time.

He scoffed, looking away in an attempt to cover the vulnerability.

“If I knew why they felt the need to throw the accusations, I’d at least have some way of combating it. Personally? I feel they’re both liars and it’s easier to tell themselves I’m a liar too than to think about what I have to say.

"I’m sure Zuko told you all about how he stood up to me, did the right thing–which is called betrayal, by the way, regardless of whether or not you’re doing the right thing, turning against your people is still betrayal–helped take down his evil father.

"Did he tell you about how his single mission in banishment was to kill the Avatar? Did he tell you how he lied to me about achieving that goal? And how I upheld what I said and welcomed him back?

"Or Iroh. Do you have any idea how many times he’s promised me that he’d train with me? Or be there? And simply didn’t? Or how he obtained the title the Dragon of the West by slaying a dragon–which he lied about doing.

He spoke as if he wasn’t bothered by the facts because, quite frankly, he wasn’t. The idea that Zuko still obsessed over something that happened twenty years ago was frankly ridiculous to him. If anything, his expression went forcibly blank as Azulon continued prattling on in the background.

But he could tell pressing the topic wasn’t wise.

“Of course.”

His expression flickered again with irritation.

“Not one of them listen to a word I say. And I’m down here, they can put whatever they want in the history books.”

A heavy huff.

He should probably be thankful that they’d only twisted the story that much.

But, when he moved on to address the supposed-lies, Tukkuttok became interested again. 

“What else do you think they lied about?” 

Tukkuttok was not naive. He didn’t suddenly believe that his great uncle and father were both liars and that Fire Lord Ozai was a beacon of truth. Though, it was worth hearing out the other perspective. It was worth it to know how his mind worked. It was worth it to hear his grandfather out. That was Tukkuttok’s thinking anyway.

"I wasn’t trying to be a father. I was being a royal and teaching him how to be a ruler.

"And if you’re talking about the Agni Kai. Zuko attended a meeting he wasn’t meant to be in, completely disregarded protocol, accepted the Agni Kai, and then refused to fight it despite me warning him to do so several times.

"He broke the rules and was punished.

"Was it cruel? Yes. Was it wrong? The way I was raised? No. But Zuko needs to stop framing it as if I was simply a megalomanic bastard who had entirely arranged the situation solely with the intent to hurt him.”

Annoyance flickered on his face.

“I had no intention of murdering the entire city of Ba Sing Se. It was literally under my control. Why would I kill them. The Fire Nation wanted to unite the world under them, not destroy it.

The prince never thought that his father would lie a hand on him. The young man had not once been scared of his own dad or even entertained the thought of being thrown from his home, no matter how badly he messed up. The thought of his dad being so little, as old as Tukkuttok’s youngest siblings, and his father burning them was incomprehensible. 

A bit of guilt crossed Tukkuttok then, thinking of his father. No wonder he was so wary of this man. Tukkuttok figured he’d be unnerved by a man who had done something like that to him, even if said-man was stripped of power. 

“I mean, you raised my dad that way and if he burned me like that I think I’d still be pretty upset with him. I don’t know how you did that to a kid, even if he broke some rule or whatever. Kids do stupid stuff because they’re kids. When I was thirteen, I tried to run away to Republic City. My uncle sent me back though.” 

Tukkuttok pouted then, thinking about Ba Sing Se. The stories relayed to the prince painted a very different picture.

There was somewhere, a spark of life in him.

He didn’t give up easily.

“Let’s talk history, shall we? I was Firelord for five years. I’ve been in this cell for over twenty.

"I participated in a single military assault, on the day of the Comet, during which I attacked an unpopulated part of the earth kingdom.

”Iroh participated in dozens, if not hundreds, killed by his own hand a similar number of people.

“My daughter took over Ba Sing Se. First with a failed assault with perhaps a handful of casualties. Then? Took over the city without violence. Compared to Iroh’s assault on the city that lasted over a year in which he actively worked to starve and cut the supplies off from the city.

"The Avatar’s forces invaded my capital on the Day of the Black Sun with intent to take my life during my weakest moment. I spared their lives. Every last one of them.

"The people we attacked? The benders were captured and neutralized. The civilians left alive under our rule.

"And how about the seize on the North, hm? In which the Avatar launched a retaliatory attack that caused the death of 26 captain class warships? Does he still claim he’s never took a life, by the way?

"I’ve done terrible things. I acknowledge this. I’ve done them in the name of my country and in the name of war.

“No… Uncle Aang still never says anything about… he says air nomads are never to take a life, even of the smallest ant.” 

The teenager stared at the cracks between the stones on the floor, watching insects crawl there. He thought of the avatar’s words on how every life was sacred, even the bugs’ lives. Then, if what Ozai said was true, Uncle Aang took people’s lives too? 

“I didn’t know you spared people. I mean… no one said you killed citizens like that, but… I just heard that you wanted to kill everyone in the whole city of Ba Sing Se. I never understood that. It seems not just violently cruel, but… unnecessary. I didn’t know a lot of these things, really, or if I did… I never thought about what they meant or the details of them.”

History was open in the Fire Nation. It was a mandate his father had passed to ensure transparency and to promote peace, but Tukkuttok never thought about what some of the history truly implied-- the bloodshed implied.

Iroh always was the better son. Just think, if you weren’t around, he wouldn’t have had a chance to leave us.

Now, Ozai’s gaze shot to give the phantom standing over him a heavy glare.

“Don’t blame Iroh’s actions on me, on my mere existence!” he snapped, baring his teeth at what he logically knew was a wall.

Gaze lowered once more and lips pressed into a thin line.

“After all, Iroh’s the king of taking responsibility of his own actions… except when it comes to how he neglected his younger brother.”

A scoff before he finally lifted his gaze back up the boy, even if it was debatable if he actually saw anything.

“I wasn’t blaming it on you. I was just saying that might be why he got to not be prosecuted. Plus, lots of people in the war who worked under you got pardoned or got short sentence or had to be educated and stuff. You’re in the most trouble because you did cause a lot of trouble, not that you probably want to rehash that.” 

The prince sighed then, finishing the apple and putting its core into his bag too before leaning back on both hands.

Expression clouded, “How old are you? And you have an older sister?”

Expression fell into one that looked dead, eyes empty, mouth telling no emotion.

“Since the war ended,” he stated, a more simple metric of how long his torture had gone on, even if it told him nothing.

Where you belong. Really, death is too merciful for a teacherous rat like you.

Ozai’s head drifted.

“You know, Iroh’s crimes far outnumber mine. Except he gets off because he, what, feels bad about it?

Tukkuttok replied, though he knew Ozai was only asking to gauge the passage of time. It was sad to Tukkuttok to think that things were so meaningless and redundant that Ozai could not even keep tab of the days, weeks, months, or even years. It was haunting, in a way. 

“I know that Uncle was a general in the Hundred Year War.” 

Tukkuttok paused then, sighing, before continuing. 

“For the bad side, too, I know he conquered Ba Sing Se for Azulon before he reconquered it for the Earth Kingdom. I don’t know what else bad things he’s done. I mean, to be fair, Grandpa, I think he also gets away with it because he reconquered the city and gave it back to the Earth King after Aunt Azula stole it.” 

The prince leaned his chin on his hand and then pulled his bag over. He took two apples from it and offered one out to his grandfather. 

“Want one?” 

Tukkuttok kept his hand extended as the other he used to bring the apple to his lips as he took a bite from it.

Something like amusement sparkled in sunken eyes that had seen too much and nothing all at the same time.

“You’re probably the first to tell me that, you know.”

Eyes drifted halfway shut as he heard words that didn’t exist, conversations that replayed themselves and twisted.

“Let me guess, Iroh treats you like the most precious thing he’s ever seen. He speaks of wisdom and kindness and reaching out a helping hand.

"You know he’s never given me any of those things? You know he’s never even visited me here?

"Why?

His great uncle was very worried about what might happen to his grandnephew under his brother’s influence. Any time Ozai was brought up, Uncle Iroh would get quiet and tell Tukkuttok that Ozai was a very bad man who hurt people deeply. 

“I didn’t know he never visited you… I mean, I figured he didn’t really since I was born. He seems to think you’re going to make me cry or something, but I’m not that much of a baby, plus you aren’t all that scary, no offense.”

Tukkuttok then took a seat in front of his grandfather, folding his legs on the prison floor.

Tukkuttok rolled his eyes before moving his hands to stuff back into his jacket’s pockets. 

“I think you deserve it because everyone does. I don’t think there has to be some big, grandiose, profound reason for why another human being deserves some basic compassion just because they did some crappy stuff. It’s not like I’m trying to put you back on the throne, just… make your life less miserable. I don’t see why that has to be an… ordeal with anyone.”

Tukkuttok really did not understand his family on that one. They spoke like he was so impressionable or foolish that he would try to put his grandfather on the throne. He knew of what Ozai had done. He wasn’t stupid. He just wanted to talk to the man. 

“Well, I’m dating Katsumi and she’s the head guard. She already promised that me coming here was a secret, so I don’t see why she couldn’t keep this secret too.” 

The eighteen-year-old flashed his grandfather a grin and leaned forward on the balls of his feet and rocked back and forth. He had the same lopsided grin that his father had and had Zuko’s amber eyes. His skin was dark and his hair was brown and curly and his excitement came clear-as-day from his uncle.

“Why? Well, my dad, my great uncle, my mom– you don’t know my mom, do you? Well, her too, and my sister, who I don’t think you know either, she’s older than me– they’re all always telling me I should never even go meet you. Even my Uncle Sokka tells me it’s the worst idea I ever had.” 

Tukkuttok rolled his eyes and let out an irritated huff. 

“You’re still my grandfather. You’re still a person. I don’t know… it made me sad to think that anyone would be all by themselves all the time and it’s not like you can do any harm. I don’t know why they freak out so much. You’re stuck in there, not to rub it in, but… I don’t know what their big concern is if someone just goes to see you.” 

“I just don’t think anyone should be alone and… no one else would come and you are my granddad, so… I just… I want to, really, is what it boils down to. I’d like to visit and make you a little less miserable. I don’t like anyone to be miserable.”

He laughed.

It was a rough noise, clearly not one of amusement, and not one commonly made, either.

He thinks you’re a person.  Isn’t that cute.

For now, Ozai ignored the ghostly words of Azulon as he felt cloth brush his back.  

“Well, Grandpa, if it looks turtle duck, swims like a turtle duck, and quacks like a turtle duck… then, it probably is a turtle duck.” 

Tukkuttok shook his head, folding his arms then over his chest. 

“Jeez, I’m just trying to help, no need to get all pissy about it.” 

Tukkuttok picked up his jacket and irritably put it back on before stuffing his hands back in his pockets with a sulk. 

“I know that Unc– Avatar Aang took your bending. I… I can’t imagine what that feels like… I’m a firebender, too.”

The older teenager sprouted a flame in his hand then to demonstrate to his grandfather his abilities. 

“I know I can’t fix that. Nothing could replace your bending, but I can still try to make things better without Dad knowing. He doesn’t come in here, really, does he? So, there’s a lot of things I could do.” 

“I could bring you books, maybe? I’d be bored out of my mind in here if I were you. I’d probably smash my head against the wall. Plus, I bet they feed you the most disgusting food ever. I could bring you some dinners and tea? Maybe that would make life a tiny bit better?”

Lips quirked into a snarl at the demonstration of the firebending.  It was a tease–entirely uncalled for, and Ozai forced himself to ignore it.

“Trust me, I have.”

Maybe not specifically his head–that was too important, his only hope of ever getting out of here, but his fist, for sure.

“He doesn’t come here but you can rest assured that his guards report every little detail to him.  Can’t risk daddy dearest finding some support and getting out of the little torture pit devised specifically for him.”

Eyes swiveled about the room.

Something seemed off.

“Why? Well, my dad, my great uncle, my mom-- you don’t know my mom, do you? Well, her too, and my sister, who I don’t think you know either, she’s older than me-- they’re all always telling me I should never even go meet you. Even my Uncle Sokka tells me it’s the worst idea I ever had.” 

Tukkuttok rolled his eyes and let out an irritated huff. 

“You’re still my grandfather. You’re still a person. I don’t know… it made me sad to think that anyone would be all by themselves all the time and it’s not like you can do any harm. “He won’t discover I’m here! Trust me there are a lot of things my dad does not know about.” 

Tukkuttok frowned at the sad state of the elder and took off his jacket, offering it through the cell’s bars. 

“Here… if you’re cold.” 

The prince sighed and glanced around the chamber, feeling sorry for Ozai, despite knowing all he had done. 

“Maybe I could make things a bit better, pull some strings or something?”

“I’m always cold,” he shot back, not moving to accept the object, head tilting with judgment on his face.

“They took my firebending from me.  They mutilated my soul.  Nothing will ever fix that.”

Expression slipped into an annoyed frown.

Tukkuttok picked up his jacket and irritably put it back on before stuffing his hands back in his pockets with a sulk. 

“I know that Unc-- Avatar Aang took your bending. I… I can’t imagine what that feels like… I’m a firebender, too.”

The older teenager sprouted a flame in his hand then to demonstrate to his grandfather his abilities.

“I just wanted to meet you and… come for a visit, really. I won’t tell my dad.”

“Your father will find out regardless and he will immediately accuse me of trying to brainwash you to my side.”

A dull glare as arms folded into his sleeves and he shivered.

Tukkuttok frowned at the sad state of the elder and took off his jacket, offering it through the cell’s bars. 

“Here… if you’re cold.”

Tukkuttok looked at the old and frail man behind bars with little more than pity, but it made his heart hurt. The young man knew that the former fire lord could not bend. It seemed as though he could hardly move, yet he was damned to wither away behind these bars for Spirits knew how long. 

“I’m Tukkuttok. I’m… your grandson. I’m Fire Lord Zuko’s son. He doesn’t know I’m here. I’m not supposed to be here.”

A moment of silence as he considered the words.

Lips curled in disgust.

“What? You’re kicking me out? Why?” 

He shook his head, then sticking his hands in his pockets.
