There is no such thing as “a real SJW”.  “Social justice warrior” was always a negative label from the beginning, created to designate those that are not representing social justice as it should be (kind of like how the term “weekend warrior” is used to describe someone who’s normally boring from Monday through Friday, but goes out of their way to indulge themselves irresponsibly on the weekends in an attempt to compensate).  Wearing that label unironically is like publicly proclaiming that you’re a bigot.  You’re utilizing the No True Scotsman logical fallacy here.  Also, the fact that you said “make stupid people uncomfortable on the internet” really doesn’t reflect well on you, especially when the majority of anti-SJWs are liberals, LGBTA people, minorities, etc. that are simply “uncomfortable” with how you’re poorly representing what we believe in.  The fact that there even is a divide between people that all desire equality just goes to show that someone is doing it wrong (hint: It’s not the anti-SJWs).  If anything, you’re just showing people exactly the kind of attitude that people hate about SJWs.  It’s the fanaticism.  It’s the extremism.  There are people who simply have faith in a higher power, and then there are people like WBC, who actively use that faith to try to harm others.  This is why they’re really the perfect analogy when discussing what SJWs are to activism.

Bullying a fan artist into attempting suicide because she drew a Steven Universe character “too skinny”.  Have even more on this. Hell, here’s a whole BUNCH of bullshit pulled by SJWs in that fandom.

Bullying a trans teen and invalidating his identity because he dared to suggest that spreading hatred solves nothing.

SJWs send people so many death threats that there is an entire blog devoted to compiling them.

Using phishing links to try to obtains others’ IP addresses.

Giving someone’s personal information to a potential rapist.  This has happened at least TWICE now.

Posing as other users, or fabricating replies from other users in an attempt to defame them.

Glorifying unhealthy attitudes and behaviors, such as self-harm, and anorexia.

Glorifying unhealthy attitudes towards obesity (it’s fine to support body positivity, but it’s NOT OKAY to deny that there are health risks associated with obesity).

Romanticizing mental illness, and encouraging self-diagnosis (which is dangerous to one’s health).

Showing people how to LIE to get a diagnosis of autism.

Glorifying murderers and making excuses for women who commit acts of assault.

Routinely threatening and victim-blaming rape victims that don’t hold all men responsible for what happened to them.  Have even more from another user regarding the same post.

Spreading an unfounded rumor about the leading organization dedicated to the aid of rape victims being “transphobic” after they found out that said organization discourages the teaching of “rape culture” on college campuses.

CONSTANTLY harassing and belittling women who don’t wish to call themselves feminists.  I’ve personally experienced this more times than I can even remember.

Using someone else’s copyrighted characters to sell merchandise promoting ideals that their creator is openly against.

Making up and passing around false stories of sexual assault on children.  This, too, has happened at least twice now.

Passing around false information about important historical figures.

Claiming to be “hurt” be people shipping fictional characters.

Bullying someone off of tumblr for not tagging the color blue that is THE DEFAULT COLOR OF TUMBLR.

Telling people that they’re not allowed to represent THEIR OWN CULTURE.  The same has happened regarding hijabs as well.

Thinking it’s the least bit okay to record total strangers and post the videos online to demonize them.

Trying to force content creators to cater to THEM instead of creating what they want to.

Actually trying to convince people that air conditioning is sexist.  It worries me that there are three separate sources for this.

Calling in false bite reports in order to get someone’s domesticated pet taken away and euthanized, simply because they were against the owners having it for a pet.

Trying to turn a holiday established by a woman into a “patriarchal conspiracy”.

Constantly trying to hijack tragedies, and try to use them as a political step stool, regardless of the feelings of the families and friends of the deceased (including literally erasing the fact that there were twice as many male victims as female in the Elliot Rodger case, and even claiming they were “accidental” killings , when three of them were his first victims, and were stabbed to death, and despite that Rodger himself expressed a hatred of men, as well as an intent to kill “anyone in sight”).  On top of that, his blog was filled with posts about how much he hated full-blooded Asian men.

Someone on here is currently facing jail for pushing razorblades in front of their suicidal sister, and telling her to kill herself for having “straight-passing privilege”.

Here’s someone who not only had a knife sent to their home address with a note reading “Please kill yourself”, but someone also called 911, and gave a false report saying that he was suicidal.

Here’s someone that had a false police report filed on them, and had to stop the SWAT team from entering his house.

Here’s someone who had a syringe sent to their home address.

Here’s someone asking a young mother if her infant child has died yet.

The same people also tried to illegally have said mother’s husband deported.

SJWs from this site caused a woman to lose her job, because they decided to harass her boss via email (she has since gotten her job back).  Why?  For making comics based directly on interactions she witnessed on tumblr, complete with links to those interactions as sources.

Here’s a teenage girl trying to take a little boy’s attempted suicide, and make it all about her. Mind you, she and her followers are people that perpetrate the exact same kind of bullying that this boy tried to end his life over.  And they still continue to do it.

Here are her followers threatening people with death and violence over things as pointless as fandom polls.

People on tumblr were the ones who CAUSED the “raid” on tumblr by trying to “#shutdown4chan”.  4chan became bored after a single night, while tumblr continued crying like babies, and making false claims that people on 4chan were “being arrested by the FBI”.

Meanwhile, the sane people of tumblr mocked the shit out of them for intentionally kicking the hornet’s nest, and then whining when they got stung.

People here and on Twitter had enough of a shit fit over The Fine Young Capitalist’s fundraiser to promote women in gaming that they actually hacked the fundraiser page. 

Why?  Because 4chan contributed over $23k to it.

Non-cis people do not have institutional power/privilege over cis people.

Saying “I hate all men” is pretty rude, and generalizing, and prejudiced/discriminatory, but it can never actually be sexist because of the balance of power.

This is my main message. Stop hating people for their gender identity, sex, sexual orientation, or race. It’s wrong. It’s stupid. It doesn’t solve problems. It only starts them.

Racism - the belief that all members of each race possess characteristics or abilities specific to that race, especially so as to distinguish it as inferior or superior to another race or races.

Sexism - prejudice or discrimination based on sex; especially : discrimination against women

Note that especially against women doesn’t mean only against women.

Phobia - an extreme or irrational fear of or aversion to something. Cisphobia and heterophobia are perfectly apt terms when describing an irrational fear or hatred of cis and straight people.

Nowhere in any of these definitions are balances of power or oppression mentioned.

Howard Ashman, who collaborated on the film’s score and had a huge influence on the movie’s story and themes, was a gay man who died of AIDS shortly after work on the film was completed. If you watch the film with that in mind, the message of it becomes clear. Gaston demonstrates that bullies are rewarded and beloved by society as long as they possess a certain set of characteristics, while nice people who don’t are ostracized. The love story between Belle and the Beast is about them finding solace in each other after society rejects them both.

Notice how the Beast reacts when the whole town comes for him. He’s not angry, he’s sad. He’s tired. And he almost gives up because he has nothing to live for. But then he sees that Belle has come back for him, and suddenly he does. In the original fairy tale, the Beast asks Belle to marry him every night, and the spell is broken when she accepts. In the Disney movie, he waits for her to love him, because he cannot love himself. That’s how badly being ostracized from society and told that you’re a monster all your life can fuck with your head and make you stop seeing yourself as human.

It’s literally textbook abuse, textbook stockholm syndrome, and it’s great if you can find positive messages in that movie but please don’t hand-wave the abuse that Belle endures or the fact that her happy ending is literally her reward for loving her abuser and choosing to stay - and her reward is no longer being terrified and imprisoned.

Please don’t ignore the damaging messages in that film just because you want to talk about one of the better ones - how many young children have seen, will see Belle terrified of a controlling person with an explosive temper and zero self-control, and then see that if you just love someone like that enough they’ll turn into a kind and gentle prince?

This story might have been great if the Beast hadn’t been written as abusive. Or if he had been and Belle had succeeded in leaving. Or if her staying with him was read as tragic. But as it stands, we’re supposed to think it’s romantic that this young woman fell in love with a cruel and terrifying person who imprisoned and controlled her.

I’m sorry but you’re wrong.

Belle did not fall in love with her abuser.

I will not deny that Beast was abusive in the beginning. He was downright beastly. And Belle hated him. And feared him. And was disgusted by him.

But here’s the thing:

Beast CHANGED.

He was a cold-harded bastard who, over the process of weeks/months, slowly changed! 

And it’s only then that Belle starts to care about him. 

Leading to them slowly developing a friendship and eventually “something more”.

Leading to one of the most beautiful Disney moments:

But even then, when her father is shown in the woods, Beast tells her to go and Belle goes!

She only comes back, not because “it’s just too scary out there without her abuser whose violence protects her” (that’s just ludicrous!) but because she genuinely cares about the man that the Beast became. (And she despised the monster that Gaston had become.)

I have gotten so sick and tired of people diminishing Belle’s personal power and the importance of her story by saying she only stayed with the Beast because of “Stockholm syndrome.”

This movie starts with Gaston and the Beast having basically the same entitled attitude towards the world: they feel they’re OWED whatever they want because they’re somehow superior. Belle is the catalyst and the lynchpin, and the difference in the characters of the two men becomes blatantly obvious in how they react to not getting what they want from Belle.

Gaston sulks and pouts and tries to force her to marry him, to the point that he convinces the entire village to help him plan a shotgun wedding with an unwilling bride, institutionalize her father, and even storm a castle to murder an unknown “monster,” still with the idea that with no Beast, Belle will be “his.” The most telling thing is that despite how much Gaston claims to want Belle, the moment she publicly rejects him (”He’s no monster, Gaston! YOU are!”), he immediately dismisses her as crazy and locks her in a cellar while he goes off to kill the person she actually cares about.

Beast sulks and pouts…and then makes significant changes to his behavior and his manners, both to show Belle that he cares for her and that he CAN be a better man. He changes both FOR Belle and BECAUSE of her. He pays attention to what she says, what she doesn’t like, and what makes her happy. And she’s not afraid to tell him, in no uncertain terms, exactly what he’s doing wrong.

“If you’d hold still, it wouldn’t hurt as much!” “Well, if you hadn’t run away, this wouldn’t have happened!” “If you hadn’t FRIGHTENED ME, I wouldn’t have run away!” “…..Well, YOU shouldn’t have been in the west wing!” “Well, you should learn to control your temper!”

This is not the behavior of a woman too afraid of the Beast to leave and too cowed by abuse to stand up for herself. The Beast literally shouts in her face, and she barely flinches. This is a woman in full control of her life and completely able to make her own choices. If the Beast hadn’t changed, if he’d acted like Gaston instead of demonstrating radical self-improvement, if she thought for one second that her life was truly in danger, she would have left and never come back.

She’s spent the better part of her adult life standing up to and actively shutting down an overbearing and physically intimidating man who shows immediately and repeatedly that he has no respect for her wishes or her personal space. She is not going to back down just because someone growls and blusters at her, no matter how big his teeth are.

Belle is a force to be reckoned with.

And the message here is not, “If you love someone enough, you can fix them.”

“If they actually love you, they won’t be abusive.”
