So for my senior thesis, I had to attend three shows during a one week period and see how EDM fans use their mobile phones at events… and lucky enough, Troyboi was the first show of my research!

First off lemme just say that Kill Them With Colour opened for Troyboi and I absolutely LOVED him. His music and the vibe he brought to his set was exactly what Troyboi needed. Although Kill Them With Colour had more of a summer, driving-with-the-windows-down vibe to his tracks, it still was dope. He played more housey-trance music like Flume’s newest track, “Never Be Like You”- but that doesn’t mean that he didn’t kill it because his set makes me want to see him again!

Okay well first off let me say that I just recently got into Troyboi this summer and I love his music. He’s an upcoming DJ from London and has such a unique sound to his tracks that I can’t even put into words how good he was. The crowd for this show was majority college students, as it was a Sunday night, but the place felt like it was crowded because of how amped everyone was for Troyboi. 

Although he did play a lot of his own songs, he played A LOT of rap…. and normally I am not about that- but with Troyboi I LOVED IT. A couple songs into his set he drops DJ Snake’s “Propaganda” and then played Biggie Smalls’ “Ten Crack Commandments” while transitioning into Flosstradamus’ “Roll Up.”

Troyboi also dropped some #TBT’ jams, such as “Drop It Like Its Hot”- but he didn’t forget to add in the best of the best tracks… I mean is it REALLY an EDM show if you don’t hear Valentino Khan’s “Deep Down Low”? Cause I don’t think so. Troyboi also played his newest release, “And Wot”- which got the crowd even more pumped up (listen below).

Let’s also not forget all the rap he intertwined into his set- such as Fetty Wap’s “My Way”, Travis Scott’s “Antidote”, as well as Drake & Future’s “Jumpman”. 

Oh and heavy bass? You got it. He threw in RL Grime’s remix to “The Hills” and also Carnage’s “Bricks”… but let us not forget he also played my favorite track from Flosstradamus, “Prison Riot” as well as his track with them, “Soundclash”.

Overall, I give Troyboi a 10/10. He put on a DOPE show for a Sunday night and how excited and happy he was added to the amazing set. Be on the lookout for this upcoming DJ because I KNOW he will be big in the future.

Considering that I attend an unnecessary amount of shows, you know that I mean business when I say that if you haven’t seen Excision on his Paradox tour, then YOU my friend really missed out on a dope ass show. Not only did I get the pleasure to see BearGrillz and Figure before Excision came out, but they did an AMAZING job to get the crowd pumped up for him. 

Let me first set the scene. I typically go to events at smaller venues, like The Middle East in Cambridge… or I’ll go big and see artists at Royale in Boston. Excision played at the House of Blues in Boston and it took me back to when I saw my first EDM show there, 4 years ago. 

 Although the HOB isn’t necessarily small, it has an intimate setting to it that I love. I was on the floor for Excision and although it was a sold out show, I didn’t feel like I was being suffocated by bassheads. I’m going to give you 5 reasons why you should see Excision on this tour: 

 1. The bass is absolutely unreal- I’m not even kidding when I say that I wasn’t even THAAAAAT close to the stage but I felt my ears were about to bleed (in a good way of course). 

2. The visuals were absolutely out of this world…. And coming from a girl who doesn’t do drugs, I could still appreciate how sick they were- in combination with the sound system, lights, and the actual stage production- it was TOTALLY worth every penny 

3. Excision is just AMAZING- he played his original songs (Robot Kitty | Make Em Bounce), as well as crowd favorites like YOGI- Burial, Propaganda- DJ Snake, Vibrate- Flux Pavilion…. I could keep going 

 4. THE DINOSAUR MADE AN APPEARANCE 

5. Bassheads are beautiful people. I would take the people that came to Excision over the half ass EDM fans I see at all other venues any day, hands down. 

Getter… 

Okay well first off, I love him. He’s hilarious on Snapchat and I get his tweets automatically sent to my phone (is that weird?). Anyway, Getter was sold out at The Middle East- meaning that there was 600 people crowded into this underground basement to hear him perform. 

Thoughts… he killed it. Voltran, a Boston DJ, opened up for him and honestly, I loved Voltran more. Don’t get me wrong, Getter was dope, but I honestly feel like half of the people that came to this show only knew him as the “suh dude” guy from Vine and not because he’s a filthy trap DJ. 

I guess from attending all these shows for research, I’m starting to learn who goes to these events to get fucked up… and who goes to actually enjoy the music. I had three people ask me if the “main guy” was on yet when Getter was on stage and I was like ???????

BUT that doesn’t have anything to do with Getter’s performance because he rocked it. Although I was squished to the people next to me all night, I had an awesome time with them and Getter played some dope tracks. I just think I’ve had enough of The Middle East- basically because it’s an 18+ venue. I feel like I’m always surrounded by children.

Here are some videos from Getter’s show though, check them out! I give him a 7/10 for his show and would most likely see him again if he was on the lineup of any of my upcoming festivals.

Honestly, Marshmello absolutely killed Royale on Friday night! I honestly think that I need to stop going to these tiny venues because the entire production Marshmello had (the lighting, sound system, CO2 cannons, etc) seriously brought this show to life.

Although Marshmello’s true identity is still a mystery to us EDM lovers, he is SO good. I honestly don’t think I moved from the front for his entire set because it was just THAT good. He had a mixture of trap and heavy music, but he also has his own unique sound to his music that gives off this “soft” vibe to him, but without the music actually being soft. I feel like I could listen to Marshmello for days because his music has such a happy vibe to it.

Marshmello was also sold out on Friday- but even with that, I didn’t feel like I was super crowded. I had enough area to dance and jump around without wondering if I was going to bump into someone. Marshmello’s set was amazing and I cannot wait to see him again- 10/10!

Keys N Krates | Boston | Paradise Rock Club

Let me just say that this set was one of the best sets I’ve seen in MONTHS (and you know that says a lot because I go to at least one a week). Everything about the atmosphere, the way they went with promoting their Midnite Mass tour via social media, as well as their whole set… everything was on point. 

Last time I saw them was last year at Moonrise in Maryland, tracing back to the first time at Hudson Project last summer. Although I haven’t seen them in over a year, I do follow them on all social media platforms and absolutely love their music, so seeing them in such a small, intimate venue like the Paradise Rock Club made this show even better than one of their festival sets, I personally believe. 

I’m not going to give you the entire track list of their set, (although I really enjoyed the full performance & listen to it more than I probably should)… but I truly recommend that you (and all of your friends) take the time to see them perform live if they come around to your city!

The low down: They started the set off in the beginning of the night with songs including “Clique” (trap remix),  “Are We Faded” and transitioning into some of their new tracks from their Midnite Mass EP, making this set truly beautiful. 

Other songs included in their performance are “Stay High (Tove Lo Flip)” into a SICK remix of Flosstradamus’s “Soundclash,” they played everything and anything that a trap fan could appreciate and love, with the fans wanting more & more with every song. They played crowd favorite originals, “Treat Me Right,” as well as the new track off their EP, “Save Me.”

“BOSTON! We are Keys N Krates… We want you all to enjoy yourselves, enjoy the ride, enjoy the vibes” …and that’s exactly what this sold out show did

I think that the coolest thing about seeing Keys N Krates live is that they are not just DJ-ing with their turntable equipment, but they also add the live music aspect to the show. With one on the drums, another on the keyboard, and the third on the turntables, all these sounds combined gives their performance such a unique vibe.

Yellow Claw | Boston | Royale

Alright, first things first. I am OBSESSED with Yellow Claw. I have loved them since the first time I saw them live at EDCNY last year, following them at Moonrise, making last Friday at Royale the third time of me seeing this Amsterdam trio. 

When I say the word “obsessed”, I truly mean that. I’ve made YC shirts for them for EDCNY (which turned out absolutely horrible), I have a Barong family sweatshirt (because who doesn’t wish they were part of that), and I can listen to Mixtape #9 thousands of times and never get sick of it.

But, what I saw Friday was a disappointment. Like I LOVE YOU GUYS but can you please switch up your sets… at least a little bit? I was cue-ing everything Bizzey was about to say & knew the track that was up next. Maybe I’m just too much of a fan, or maybe I’ve just listened to Yellow Claw’s live sets TOOOOOO much that it took the fun out of seeing them, who knows. 

Songs included in their set are “Catch Me,” “Pills” featuring Flosstradamus, “The Dopest” by Moski, “Lean On” by Major Lazer (Dillon Francis X Jauz Remix), and more. To be honest, I’m just glad they played “In My Room” from BFM… that song is my favorite.

Overall, if you love YC and haven’t overplayed their live sets, then you’ll enjoy seeing them live. I think I enjoyed myself more because I was there with my best friends, who I saw YC for the first time with, so it was an amazing time… don’t worry Yellow Claw I still love you all, I just hope next time I see you guys live you surprise me a bit muahahahahah. I give y’all an 8/10

Hey west coast… are you ready for another festival lineup? Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival just released their lineup last week and let me say it is stacked! Weekend one is from April 15-17 and the second weekend is April 22-24, held at the Empire Polo Club in Indio, California, located in the Inland Empire’s Coachella Valley in the Colorado Desert.

Confirmed artists Guns N Roses and LCD Soundsystem are the headliners, but let’s also not forget to mention that this is the FIRST year that Coachella has had an electronic artist headlining the festival on their main stage as well, the one and only Calvin Harris!

Coachella has artists for all types of music lovers. If you love rap, catch A$AP Rocky, DJ Mustard, G-Eazy, Ice Cube, Joey Bada$$, Rae Sremmurd, and more in the valley.

Mainstream artists include Ellie Goulding, Flume, Jack Ü, Major Lazer, The Chainsmokers, and Zedd, as well as electronic DJ’s such as RL Grime, Snails, and Tchami.

Coachella is almost sold out, so get your tickets while you can! General admission passes start at $399, or $459 with a shuttle pass attached. Coachella also offers camping packages, VIP camping, dinner, and shuttles to and from the airport.

Bassheads, come one come all, to the first ever-Bass Center 2016! As we know from past events, Bassnectar events are one of a kind. From Nectar NYE to Basslights, Lorin Ashton definitely knows what he’s doing and what his bassheads love. 

So remember about a month ago when Lorin released those chocolate bars with the golden tickets? Well mine came in the mail when I got home from Basslights and unfortunately I wasn’t one of the 5 lucky winners (but the chocolate was bomb though).

Today he announced the 2 day Colorado “Bass Center” event with lineup and it’s pure gold (ha ha get it?)

Starting this year, Bass Center will be an annual weekend special event with enhanced production, magical extras, and special effects topped with an insane lineup. This year’s lineup features Flux Pavilion, Wu-Tang Clan, Flying Lotus, Porter Robinson, Lupe Fiasco, Alunageorge, Minnesota, G Jones, Dabin & Thriftworks, which each of the two nights featuring an extended Bassnectar set.

On Bassnectar’s website, he states that there will be two Camping Villages that will offer limited camping for the “hardcores who basically want to arrive on Friday and not leave until Sunday. Stay tuned for more details, as well as multiple official after-parties offsite throughout the weekend, and join us as we take over Colorado for a mid summer night’s lucid dream.” 

I’m not really a fan of rap but I do LOVE Lupe, Flux, and Porter.. so good job Lorin.

With Coachella and Ultra Music Festival already having released their lineup, Governors Ball decided to join in on the fun and announced their diverse lineup for this year’s festival last week.

From June 3-5, this New York-based festival will bring in music lovers for all types of fans. Some headliners include Kayne West, The Killers, Miguel, Mac Miller, Thomas Jack, Galantis, Duke Dumont, and more.

Like they just reached 1 BILLION YouTube plays and the single has 600 million Spotify streams. “Lean On” is now the 16th most viewed video of ALL time on Youtube and the ONLY EDM track to ever hit 1 billion views…
