No Bullshit Pixel Art Tutorial — Week 1
retronator: This is my attempt to start sharing everything I know about pixel art as concisely as possible. It comes in the form of focused tips, packaged into 10 second videos. The intro + first two are already online. The rest of Week 1 will air one per day for the rest of the week. Go view them at: giveit100.com/pixelart
The slides above expand on the videos and act as cheat sheets on the topics I cover. Like & reblog if you want to support this project.
Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing left to add, but when there is nothing left to take away. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Suspense, Horror and Mystery Genre Differences Infographic
Cohesion by Eric Wong
The Rockefeller Foundation has tasked 100 cities, many of which are capital cities, to build greater resilience and a more inclusive economy. Cities are resilient when they are ‘united’. Inspired by ‘The Blazing World’ by Margaret Cavendish the Duchess of Newcastle, the 1666 novel follows a heroine who discovers a world where diversity and inventions work harmoniously together; the knowledge of which she would later transfer to save her homeland, the United Kingdom.
The thesis employs this hypothetical premise to ask ‘how can Britain be a truly united kingdom?’ and ‘what is the re-imagined role of capital cities to suggest new urban cohesive typologies’. ‘Cohesion’, the new capital city of the United Kingdom is located at the centre of the British Isles – the Isle of Man. It is the speculative driver and investigative model to cultivate accessibility, green sustainability and compassion. The narrative aims to re-unite an arguably broken Britain in the 21st century, providing for the disenfranchised generation within the UK and the increasing dislocated global communities. While the UK’s Parliament performs as the head of foreign policies, the Queen is the champion of national unity.

A long time ago an anon asked my thoughts about drawing backgrounds, so I finally got around to putting this together. It’s more prop-centric, but it still represents my philosophy to backgrounds.
I’ll try to do something more about drawing actual background spaces in the future! Please let me know what you think, if anything is unclear, or if you have suggestions for other tutorials you might find helpful!

You might have already done this, but do you have links to resources for a monster collecting type rpg for VX Ace? Anything that might come in handy for starting that sort of game. Thank you so much!!
…actually I haven’t gotten that request yet :0 And thank you for specifying your engine!
I wasn’t quite sure how to go about this, so I just typed in any popular Monster Collecting/Raising game I could think of (Pokemon, Monster Hunter, Digimon, & Tamagatchi really) and gathered what I found here.
Here we go:
The Crystal Engine, with over 50 scripts made for Pokemon Fangames
Event Monster Capture System, and an edit made by someone else
Himework’s Monster Capturing System
Dekita RPG’s Old Pokemon Scripts
Awesomecool’s Monster Capture System
A Thread Request for a Caterpillar Monster System

A Tamagachi System! ….in Portuguese (I’m assuming you don’t know Portuguese but if you do, good on you)
A Pet System
A Monster Cataloging System
Pokemon-like Events Tutorial (not exactly the best but eh)
Buy Common Events
Base Troop Events
Class System (with subclasses!)
Hopefully, some of these help. c,: Good luck!

How'd you make the title screen look so fancy?
First I got one of these menu scripts (the last one I think), tweaked a few things (like getting rid of particles and changing the placement of the menu commands), did some photoshop magic and voilà! Title screen!
Basically it’s just the images of the faces fading in and out in the background, one layer with an image of everything that’s not meant to fade out on top and the menu commands off to the side. It’s actually the same script I was using before (and also the same one I used for From Next Door) but with the appropriate tweaking. The script does most of the work lol you just need a little imagination c:
I’m not sure how in depth you want me to go so for now that’s it, if you want some more clarification feel free to drop another message!
free software alternatives
i never stop talking about some of these so i might as well banish them to a single post! you might know about a lot of them already, but feel free to look anyway
Adobe Animate (Flash) → OpenToonz, Synfig Studio, or Pencil2D
Adobe Audition → Audacity
Adobe Illustrator → Inkscape
Adobe Photoshop → GNU Image Manipulation Program or Paint.NET
Adobe Premiere Pro/After Effects → Fusion, Shotcut, OpenShot, Natron, or Blender
Autodesk Maya → Blender
Clip Studio Paint/Paint Tool SAI → Krita, FireAlpaca, (both also include animation tools!) or MediBang Paint
FL Studio → LMMS
Microsoft Office → LibreOffice or Calligra Suite
Scrivener → Celtx (sort of?) or Evernote
VLC media player → VLC media player lol
freeware can be a great opportunity to get a feel for something and learn a new skill. and in some cases, the free versions are almost as powerful, so you might find that you saved a lot of money but made work that was just about equal to what you might have done with paid software!
Small Menu - RPG MAKER MV
I’ve re-played “The Witch’s House” recently. So, I made a plugin for MV that creates a menu like the one seen in the game! ~Luca

A Game Design document tailored for Yume Nikki fangames.
Not sure how to plan out your game? You can use this design document to plan your fangame out before you start!
It covers a lot more things like endings and such than what you can make for the jam, so don’t worry about having it all filled out or creating everything you planned. It just gives you a nice base to jump off of if you need it. :)
Hey! So some questions for more experienced RPG maker devs.
If you don’t want to stick to the music already in the program what do you do? What program would you use to create your own sound effects and music? If you wanted to purchase music specifically designed to be used in games and creative projects where would you go?
What are some good programs to make sprites with?
And what are some reliable sites to get plugins?
*rubs hands together*
Let me know if this reblog gets cut-off btw, and I’ll make it into an actual post!
MUSIC/SFX:
LMMS - Free - I use this for music. It has tons of great options for instruments/effects/etc…
Garage Band - Comes Free with a Mac computer - I’ve seen/heard good things about this! I believe quite a few musicians use this as well…
as3sfxr - Free - Really amazing online program– good for 8-bit SFX!
Amper Music - Free - Seems very crisp and clean despite still being in Beta. You have to make an account to use it, though!
Audacity - Free - Probably would be best for SFX, or editing already existent audio. However, music composition is possible! (Pretty sketchy site though, click the blue download link to the left that reads “Download Audacity 2.1.3″)
Some sites that have music and SFX for free…
Freesound.org - A damn god-send. I use it 24/7 and it’s absolutely perfect. You can search based on length, rating, etc… Best for SFX but can sometimes be used for music…
Purple Planet - Free music for your game! Rad my dudde!!
Sound Image - there is legit over 1,000 tracks, and they’re all free for commercial/non-commerical use. With proper crediting, of course. (Requirements are listed if you scroll down to “IMPORTANT - …”)
SPRITES:
Paint Tool Sai - Costs money, but there is a ripped, free version floating about that has no difference whatsoever… - I use Sai for pixel art, using the binary/pixel tool. It’s simple and easy. But a pain the mcfricken toosh when trying to resize pixels…
^^ I’ve linked to the official site– but you can most likely find the free version by looking it up on youtube…
Piskel - Free, Online - Is literally built for spriting! It’s really awesome and I use it frequently. You can see separate frames, the animation playing in the top right, and there’s even a built-in dithering tool…
Aseprite - 14.99 USD, but there is a Trial where you can not save files. - I’ve seen good things about this one! I believe there is a bunch of color palettes for use. A lot like piskel but with WAY more tools. I repeat– you cannot save files on the trial version.
Photoshop - Price depends on the version - M’not very familiar with photoshop– though I do have an old version since it was gifted to me. It’s probably better than sai regarding the fact that you can resize pixel art without it being distorted.
MS Paint - Free with Windows - if you use this you’re gonna have to find a way to make things transparent… However… I don’t really know why you’d use this if you can just use Piskel, haha!
(Game Maker also has a built-in pixel art tool, I believe!)
PLUGINS/SCRIPTS:
You can find them EVERYWHERE.
Just go on google, look up what you want to do, along with the version of RPG Maker your using… (MV, Vx/Vxace, etc.) and explore!
(ex. let’s say I want a fog effect, and I’m using Rpg Maker MV. I would go on google, and look up “Fog Effect RMMV” or “Fog RMMV” and sift through the top results…)
At times there will be more than one option for you so it’s just a matter of looking at the functions of them and deciding which would be best for what you want to do/your sanity.
However! If you want to add a few features and you’re not sure what to add, there is an MV Masterlist of plugins for you to explore. Along with one for Vx Ace.
Now, if you’ve searched valleys far and wide and can’t find the plugin/script that you need… There is an official RPG Forum with a friendly, helpful community where you can request for someone to make a plugin for you. Check the masterlist first, be very descriptive and polite, and someone will most likely help you out.
I hope this helps you out *.`* ~ d=(>_<)
