Falling Like the Stars - James Arthur
They moved in the dead of night when even the stars began to sleep and the moon was blanketed in fluffy white clouds.
It was a stealth mission, one where you should be quiet and sneaky and yet…you were laughing like a child.
Bouncing from rooftop to rooftop with the aid of grappling hooks, you and Bucky are practically racing to the target location.
“You’re telling me that Steve I-Don’t-Know-What-A-Parachute-Is Rogers jumped off a glass elevator from three stories high?” you ask your partner snarkily. “That’s hard to believe.”
Bucky rolls his eyes in annoyance but he couldn’t fight the smile forming on his lips. “You told me to tell you a story. I’m telling it.”
“Think of better stories, Buck, because this is boring. I live on the edge of danger –” Just as you speak, your ankle twists in a weird way when you land onto a building and you slip. Before Bucky can even turn and rush to your aid, you grab onto the ledge and haul yourself up with an “oof.” Your foot is okay for now, but you’re sure you’ll feel it in the morning.
When Bucky realizes you’re fine, he pushes out an irritated breath. “Can you be more careful? I can’t babysit you tonight.”
“I don’t need a babysitter anyway, asshole. I’m fine!” You fix the collar of your stealth suit and glare at him. “I’m capable of doing my job.”
“Yeah? Well, you almost faceplanting and smashing your teeth against asphalt isn’t really convincing me.”
And that’s how all of your arguments begin. Friendly banter, sometimes turning into intense bickering, reminding the compound of Sam and Bucky’s friendship. The difference is, those two got along on occasion, there was always a bigger tension between you two. Something not spoken about, but clearly there.
