i think once they got to fight sans they also realized that this isn’t who they are. they’re not some cold - hearted murderer ( though they tried really hard to be. ) + after a couple more attempts / in vain / to beat sans / they decided to whole heartedly reset. this time around, they did everything right ( even tho at first it was difficult. ) they found it in themselves to be nice / even if some times it wasn’t a genuine niceness.
