Hi everyone! i hope the end of the year is treating everyone nicely, i’m glad we’ve made it this far, first i wanted to apologize for asking for help like this, specially right now, i know almost everyone is struggling i hope everything gets better soon for all of us
As many of you know i’ve been struggling with my mental health and my financial situation is not the best, i’ve been doing little jobs like pet sitting and doing chores/paperwork for people to be able to pay rent but this month was just not a good month
I just want to be able to pay rent these holidays, i don’t want to disappoint my sister and ruined christmas. i’m not asking for anything else but to be able to pay rent on time before the 29th to make my sister happy and not getting us into troubles with our landlord (my sister is aware i don’t have rent money rn and she’s very worried)

Someone reading that post: Cool, but have you considered that exercise leads to weight loss?

Interactive computer-based reminders to diet and exercise are useless.
I mean, I literally went to Cochrane Reviews, one of the best-respected sources for massive meta-analyses, and I just input the keywords "weight loss" and "exercise," and I'm tooling through the results. Every one of the damn things shows that we do not have high-quality research indicating that exercise leads to weight loss. So no. I'm right, and you need to adjust your worldview--ask yourself, if not for weight loss, then why? Re-read those sources: exercise improved muscle density, insulin sensitivity, and cholesterol. It's good for your blood vessels, it's good for your strength, it's good for your brain.
But it won't make you thin. Maybe two pounds, maybe five, but that's about it. If you're looking at short-term, like a year, sure, you can lose weight--but the effort will almost always result in your body going "oh shit, we're living in a famine" and you will regain it, and now, with your body at a new set-point, losing it will be harder. Regaining will be easier. Welcome to the life-destroying yo-yo.
#then what the fuck are we supposed to do?
Exercise and eat lots of fruits and vegetables and whole grains because those things will keep you healthier longer, regardless of how much you weigh, and pick up your pick-axe in the ongoing horribly slow and frustrating fight of chipping away at the idea that being fat is a bad thing that means you’re a bad person. I recommend the book Fat Talk for a good place to start.
Look, you can't complain about this after giving us so many scenarios involving N locked chests and M unlabeled keys.
D&D Combinatorics [Explained]
Okay I must admit this nerd-sniped me. This raises an interesting question: given a probability p, is there a collection of DnD dice which when rolled, summed, and checked against a threshold, gives a success with probability p? I wrote a program to check some small cases, and I got some surprising results:
1/5, 2/5: yes
1/9, 2/9, 3/9: yes
4/9: ?? likely no
1/15, 2/15, 3/15: yes
4/15: ?? likely no
5/15, 6/15: yes
7/15: yes
1/16-8/16: yes
1/18-7/18: yes
8/18: equals 4/9
1/27-3/27: yes
4/27: ?? likely no
There's something going on! Can anyone prove why certain probabilities are impossible to represent by this threshold method?? I bet it's something to do with divisibility.
Okay so p definitely needs to be rational. Cool, fairly obvious, onwards.
If you're only using the dice in such a way that you only need to multiple probabilities (or the complements of), you can't get things with prime divisors over five. But once you start adding things... yeah gonna need quite a while to think about this...
Note that some of these answers depend on whether we construe "D&D dice" to mean "the types of dice used in D&D", or to mean "the types of dice rolls used in D&D"; the former admits several possibilities which the latter does not.
For example, d66 rolls (a non-standard notation meaning "roll a six-sided die twice, reading the first roll as the 'tens' place an the second rolls as the 'ones' place, yielding a two-digit number in the range from 11 to 66") are not used in D&D, but the dice used in D&D are sufficient to perform such a roll. If allowed, this makes the 4/9 case – and any other probability with a denominator of 9, for that matter – trivial, since a d66 roll has 36 equally probable outcomes, and 9 is a factor of 36.

No doctor will ever get my respect like the woman in the ER who checked me for claws and fangs because I told her I was turning into a werewolf and could feel it and let me know gently that she couldn't find any but that didnt make it feel any less real, like THATS how you do it, other doctors who just flat out told me I was wrong take notes

i am so glad you had this positive experience, and i hope this sort of kindness catches on with doctors and the general public.
Look when someone is in a confused or compromised state, no matter why,
and they are your medical charge,
it is vital to continue to treat them with dignity. Like that. Reassure them with visible practicalities that you acknowledge their fears, will not belittle them, and can show them facts to help them cope.
THAT is the proper compassion of a Healer.
Can I just add that, if you like me have delusions where everything bad that happens is your fault, the doctor shouldn't be like "Yeah, you're probably right" but try to reason with you in a respective way. OP's doctor did it right, but some of the notes make it look like people think delusions must be agreed to always, when doing so can be detrimental to the person's wellbeing
This is my favorite addition to this post because it’s true. When dealing with delusions you need to avoid the extremes - DO NOT tell the person flat out “you’re wrong”, “thats not real” or worst of all “you’re crazy.” BUT DON’T ENCOURAGE THE DELUSION EITHER! Let’s take my werewolf delusion, for example. Doctors who have flat out told me “that isn’t real” haven’t helped because for me it is real and no amount of you saying it isn’t will change my perception. It makes us feel alienated.
But someone saying “You ARE transforming into a werewolf but i have a poition thatll stop it! :D” is just as dangerous because you’re furthering a delusion which could get someone hurt. its also manipulative. we’re psychotic, not children.
So what DO you do? Acknowledge that the situation is frightening. If possible, give them the objective facts (ie, i don’t see any monsters; your mom hasn’t said anything to make it seem like she’s going to kill you) while also acknowledging that for them, it is real. Most of all, ask what you can do to keep them comfortable and safe.
Sorry for the long addition but when I made this post it didn’t occur to me apsychotic people would look at it for advice on how to handle an actively delusional person. I’m glad it’s resonating with people, though
I remember when I told a doctor someone had replaced all the veins and arteries in my body with wires and I was no longer a person. she very gently checked me over for any wounds where they could have made the incisions to put the wires in, and took photos of the places on my phone to prove it. all the places I felt were the entry points were out of my sight, behind my ears and in my back and stuff. then she offered to get me an xray if they could fit me in, but it might take a while. I declined because I didnt want to take up space for people who need it, and honestly at this point I trusted her enough to tell me if I had wires. she brought my husband in and showed him how to check me over for wounds and wires, then she asked me if I had any questions. I went back into the waiting room, feeling like I wasn't stupid and I felt much safer.
she came into the waiting room later to check if I was okay, and I felt safe, cared for, trusted and believed. she told my husband she put a psychiatrist on standby in case I got freaked out again, and told me she understands how I feel, and that she can't see anything but she gets how scary it is for me and she's on shift for a few hours and to ask for her by name if I need reassuring again.
I felt safe. I felt believed. that's how you do it.
A+ additions. The delusions are false beliefs, but the feelings are real and genuine. At the core I'm afraid of something like dying, my mom being hurt, me hurting someone, my family being targeted, etc etc. And that's scary! If that were actually happening it would be scary, and those feelings are just as real. Because for us it is actually happening. Validate the feelings and treat us with dignity, don't encourage or deny. 😎

I was DMing a friend yesterday about how the lotr films (imo) do a great job of making Gondor look vaguely Carolingian — I was kind of holding it up as a positive example of intuiting and extrapolating on what Tolkien might have meant when doing adaptations — but said I wasn’t personally sure whether Tolkien was pulling from the Carolingian Empire or maybe the very shaky papacy further south or Visigoths or something. For real though. When I lived in the UK one of the first times I was served a side of what the Brits call buttered bread, I really had to bite my tongue because I was on the cusp of yelling 'but this is raw toast!' through the cafe.
