Yakushima in southern Japan, with abundant rainfall meets almost 100% of its electricity demand through hydroelectric power.

This building, positioned to harmonize with existing vegetation, rocks and natural spring water, is a regenerative house that not only lets residents feel close to nature but also aims to enrich the natural cycle.

Made from natural, plant-based materials can also be called a "Vegan House," as it is in-tune with the lifestyle of the residents. Its ethical framework that respects life is a concept that redefines the principles of sustainability.

Villa Normanni Proves That Mediterranean Retreat Design Can Be Both Minimal and Deeply Local

Villa Normanni is a privately developed holiday villa complex in San Vito dei Normanni, Apulia, Italy, completed in 2025 by studio Urban Interior. Designed by Markéta Killí with creative involvement from her husband Lars Killi, the project was funded through the sale of two Prague properties and conceived as both a high-design holiday retreat and a long-term rental investment. The complex comprises a newly built main villa (124 m² usable) and a smaller apartment adapted from an existing agricultural structure (41 m²), totaling 206 m² of built-up area. The architecture draws directly from the Apulian vernacular—tufo stone walls, pietra Leccese floors, reed-covered pergolas, a walkable flat roof, and an external staircase—while the interiors apply a restrained material palette of wood, linen, rattan, and stone. Outdoor spaces include a pool deck, fireplace terrace, outdoor kitchen, and verandas. This Cabin on the Sázava River Is a Masterwork of Minimal Architecture — and It Started With Ash

Mimosa Architects rebuilt a small cabin on the Sázava River in the Czech Republic, working from the stone plinth left behind after the original structure burned down. The new cabin is a light wooden frame clad in charred larch on the exterior and spruce panels inside, sitting on a robust stone base that doubles as flood protection and houses the wastewater tank. The river-facing wall is fully glazed across its entire length and fitted with a folding wooden shutter that closes the cabin completely when not in use. A single unified material palette—dark wood, black metal, and natural linoleum—turns the interior into a cave-like space that directs all attention outward to the river. The main living area spans the full height of the cabin; sleeping is confined to a compact attic loft.
