Neon Trees play the @rooftopconcerts in downtown Provo. Real psyched to announce that @justinhackworth and I will be hanging a photography show this Friday at @writandvision (274 W. Center St., Provo). This show will be 12 photos from the last five years of The Rooftop Concert Series. After that we'll be exhibiting photos we took of the previous month's concert. If you’ve ever woken up with the thought “today I’m going to be enlightened,” my money is on that plan not bearing any fruit. Rapturous, brilliant insight is unpredictable and it’s been my experience that life changing moments can’t be scheduled, which is why I think it’s such a disservice that we expect ourselves to be brought to tears when confronted by great work. The problem with art is the pressure of romance. Destinations like the Guggenheim or the Met or the Louvre have somehow become places we think we’ll leave with a changed soul. Look, I love pondering on, talking about and looking at art, but the truth is that I’m rarely moved by it. The Spiral Jetty is mud, rocks and salt in the shape of a spiral and the Sun Tunnels are concrete tubes with holes drilled in them. I don’t know that they’ve ever said anything to me, nor do I think it’s reasonable to expect them to. When I look back at my experiences there I think about how cold it was the time we spent the night in Lucin or how, at twenty, I had fallen in love and hadn’t even realized it or the topics that come up when you’re five hours in to a six hour trip. And I think, maybe, that might be the point. (at The Spiral Jetty, Great Salt Lake)
