Annapurna Base Camp Trek – A Journey to the Heart of the Himalayas
If you are the one who dreams of trudging through snow capped mountains, walking over small wooden bridges, wandering in greenwood and opening eyes in the golden morning sunlight from the top of a towering Himalayan peak, ABC trek is tailor-made for you.
The Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) trek is a beautiful journey and the gateway to one of the most accessible 8000m peaks in Nepal. It brings you down into the heart of the Annapurna Conservation Area, where nature reveals itself raw and mighty. This isn’t simply a hike, this is about feeling alive, inhaling icy fresh mountain air and making peace with the silence of the Himalayas.
Where is Annapurna Base Camp?
Annapurna Base Camp stands at 4130m (13550 ft). It’s framed by some of the tallest mountains in the world, including one of Earth’s 10 highest peaks, mighty Annapurna I. On your way, you will still see lovely peaks such as Machapuchare, also known as Fishtail Mountain for its distinctive shape.
The journey typically begins in Pokhara, a serene city with lakes and mountain vistas. Then the fun begins from there.
What Makes This Trek Special?
The Annapurna base camp trek is unique in itself as it has everything in one trail.
You trek in shade, on green forests with rhododendron. In the springtime these flowers burst into a display of bright red, white and pink colour that makes this trail look like something straight out from a fairytale. You cross small rivers and streams by wooden bridges. You traverse typical villages inhabited by local Gurung and Magar families having very normal but simple life style.
The mountain views are different every day. One minute you’re strolling through a forest, the next there are huge snow-covered mountains right in front of you. The beauty keeps surprising you.
Unlike some of the more challenging Himalayan treks, ABC is moderate. It is not too difficult if you are moderately fit and have done a decent try. That's because most tourists and trekkers coming here are not that experienced.
The Experience of the Journey
Each day on this journey is not like the others.
You wake up early in the morning. The air is cold and fresh. The sun rises slowly, and the mountains turn to gold. It feels like nature is painting the sky for you alone.
You hike 5-7 hours a day in the daylight. The paths are well marked. For lunch you stop at a series of small tea houses. These are homespun and simple tea houses. And you can eat hot dal bhat (curry and rice); noodles; soup; tea; even pancakes.
Evenings are peaceful. Trekkers sit around stories of laughter and tales of the day’s walk. No honking, no traffic, nothing but mountains and stars.
The last ascent to Annapurna Base Camp will be emotional. When you arrive in the base camp, you find yourself amidst a natural amphitheatre of mountains. Mountains rise up all around you. It’s hard to put a name on the feeling. You feel little but powerful too.
The optimal time to do the ABC trek is:
Spring (March through May) – Blue skies, flowers in bloom, comfortable weather.
Autumn (September to November) – Calm weather and the best mountain vistas.
Winter is freezing, but doable if you are prepared. During monsoon season (June through August), there is heavy rain, so trails can be slippery.
One of the popular question and every one wants to know is that – Is ABC trek hard.
The answer is: It’s hard but possible.
You don’t need to be able to climb. There are no ropes or special mountaineering training required. But you should be prepared to stroll up and down for days.
(The highest point is 4,130 meters, so there’s the possibility of altitude sickness.) That’s why you should acclimatize and go slowly.
With proper preparation, and if you exercise before the trek as well as listen to your guide’s tips, you could do it.
Trek with TrekYaari -WHY?
When I first chose to do this trek, all I really wanted was for everything to be well arranged. Mountain expeditions are stunning, but they also require thoughtful logistics — permits, guides, accommodations, food and security.
That's the reason I decided to trek in association with TrekYaari. They coordinated all of the little details perfectly, so I could concentrate on having a fantastic time. These are good mates to have and it made the trip far easier, calmer ride.
The trek is not all mountains, though. It is also about people.
You trek through villages including Chhomrong, Bamboo and Deurali. The locals are nice and friendly. Their life is hard but real. There are many families who run teahouses for trekkers. You see children going to school, elders working in the fields.
The culture of the Gurung and Magar settlements is an added attraction of the journey. It’s their age-old homes, prayer flags and warm smiles which make even the mountains feel like home.
Packing smartly is very important.
The weather in the mountains can be quite fickle so it’s always best to dress for the worst and prepared for any kind of change.
