Character Design - Subterranean Elf | 8/8 (Hero Pose)

It was all leading up to this...

Without a shadow of a doubt I feel as though this design turned out ten times as better than I thought it would, challenging yet fun , my ability to draw faster and a lot effortlessly has improved tremendously

Feel the texture just works great, as for the pose could have been adjust slightly to show the Elf's more awkward/nervous mannerisms as I feel with a design its always good to try tell as much about that character without having to say a single word.

What should I take away from this? Well first and foremost making my designs less flat and focusing on, shadow, tone and light these three things are crucial, which I have tried to use on the pants and face to define details, like creases and facial definition.

As you can see I originally chose 1 but why the sudden change? Well from the feedback I received the colours and overall contrast came off as more appealing and I have to agree with that, the colours don't appear as diffused, and have much more naturalistic appeal.

The same problems were beginning to arise with these expanded designs (they are both good in there own right) however I was quick to realise that one made my design come off as an antagonist (that certainly doesn't fit the character at all)

Here is a collection of various rough sketches that vary style but all share the same theme, distressed.

Really liked the idea of the elf having this salvaged together clothing that is barely holding itself together, all the seems wearing thin ad coming loose.

The half completed Practice Sketches Chronicles

A recurring theme that you may have picked up throughout my work is that things may appear as they are light sketches or some what half complete, and there is a reason for this.

Time management/my working pace I feel as though I need to not allow work to pile up but rather take everything in good stride.

As a part some quick but helpful practice within our character design module, we went over the usage of light and shadow, inspired by the artist 'Gabriel Soares'.

Really like this idea of the elf being this resourceful but lanky like character that gets caught up with studying and research, while carrying a large collection of various vials/bottles of rationed spells and creatures he has stored with him since he has been underground.

Personal Work - Sculpting a Sun (Called Sol) | 2/2

Right chuffed with how he turned out! (would go as far to say he's one of the best sculptures I've done!) Love the subtle uses of yellow a pink to highlight his facial features as well as how the hat nicely contrasts with his (as blue is a complimentary colour of orange)

Although Sol's design has changed largely a lot since his original sketch, I feel this works a lot more effectively giving him a more joyful appearance.

Drawing Studies - Female Model

To say the least this was a very interesting workshop, yet a very helpful one, as I've notably always struggled with drawing the human form this did help me not only improve my confidence in my drawing abilities but also as a person.

Personal Work - Sculpting a Sun (Called Sol) | 1/2

Thought it would be great to practice modelling in 3D but within a more traditional format, polymer clay!

But why a sun? Well I've always been fond of the silly traditional yet over-exaggerated faces seen within a lot of old century oil surreal paintings. Another reason is that is that it'll help me to further understand the 3D form through working closely on proportions and symmetry.

Though challenging and messy this session certainly did help me further my understand the usage/placement of tone and texture focusing more on how I perceive it.

Drawing Studies - Little Trip to Tullie House

Took about twenty (unfortunately Tumblr only allows about ten o a post) or more photos to deeply study as well as generate some ideas from to create my character as though suggested by my blog so far I tend to lean into more unrealistic ideas, so it'll be a real challenge to take on the human form.

Anatomy Study - Facial Studies

Though they are very rough they're just practice to further my understanding of how the face is structured and can be broken down into stages so that you've got a simple guide to follow when constructing a face.
