Over the years I have visited and looked at (but not stayed) in numerous overseas purpose built hotel/ resorts. Sadly I found most to be either over developed, pretentious, functional with little or no atmosphere and in many cases polluted with mock statues or furnishings from a bygone era. So it was a mixture of surprise and delight on entering the gates of the Palazzo di Varignana Resort & Spa to discover a beautifully designed tranquil haven set in the hills of Varignana. Opened just 18 months ago this is a magical place perfect for complete relaxation – a place to switch off. Set in 20 hectares of lush parkland it is easily reached from Bologna’s Guglielmo Marconi airport. The original building named Villa Bentivoglio was a typical Tuscan styled residence of the 18th century and the interior has been tastefully transformed into a state of the art conference centre with new underground passage way leading to other areas through the old cellars.

Palazzo di Varignana has been rated a 4* Luxury Resort with 90 guest rooms including 13 junior and 3 superior suites of which two have their own private Spa rooms. Guest rooms are located in separate buildings close to the main hotel and reception, and have individual names – my room was on the first floor of  ‘Ii Poggio’with small balcony overlooking olive trees and rolling hills.Guests on the ground floor have a small patio. The staff throughout our stay were friendly, helpful and professional. There are a variety of places to explore in the region such as the city of Bologna and the delightful medieval village of Dozza.

Restaurants – there are two main restaurants, ‘Il Palazzo’ in the original building is open during the high season and the pool lounge bar and restaurant located beside the hotel reception is open all year round. Plans are at an advanced stage to extend this restaurant area.

Food - an extensive menu offers starters, salads, first courses, second courses, a choice of 9 pizzas cooked in an open wood burning oven, plus excellent deserts to finish. Prices range between €10-€24 ( pizzas from €12-€15) and choices include red mullet with bread toast, powdered liver & salty butter, tagliatelle  with Accademia ragu, sea bass fillet with mixed mini veg, and of course a selection of delicious Italian ice cream.

Weddings – During our stay, Ann, the other journalist from Ireland in the group, pointed out that Palazzo di Varignana would be an ideal venue to hold an Irish wedding. Now that overseas weddings are back on people’s agendas I agree completely with her. It is a superb location with a small consecrated church in the grounds and guests from Ireland could fly into nearby Bologna. The hotel Manager confirmed that wedding bookings are growing rapidly.

Special Events - From time to time special events are held at the resort. This summer a Classical Music Festival took place in the fine surroundings of Space Belvedere, a purpose built hall with an annex for use as a dining room. Tickets for concerts, depending on starting time, included lunch or dinner, and well known artists performed Mozart, Rachmaninov etc., to the delight of the packed audiences. The hotel management confirmed another festival will take place in 2015.

The resort amenities include the VarSana Spa in a contemporary building with 1800sqm comprising indoor & outdoor swimming pools, steam rooms, saunas, ice showers and more. There are 6 treatment rooms plus a gym. For the active guest a walk or cycle along the paths and tracks inside the lovely grounds is an option and the surrounding countryside is noted for both sports.

Children’s Area – families with small children are welcome and a special area has been designated to keep them happy. There are games, slides and even a small cable car.  By the way the family pet dog is also welcome.

Sporting Activities;

Golf – the hotel has a special arrangement with a golf association which has 25 courses throughout the Emila Romagna region including the 18 hole course at Castel San Pietro (10km away).

Horse Riding – arrangements are in place for guests to use an equestrian centre in San Lazzaro with 3 covered arenas, 3 trial areas, grass courses and cross country riding.

Finally Shopping -   for compulsive shoppers the Castel Guelfo Style outlet centre is a 15 minute drive away.

The Ferrari Exhibition – another car name known worldwide.  See a complete collection of Ferrari cars close to the factory where they were built.

Ducati Motorcycle Museum - a must for enthusiasts. Opened in 1998 to exhibit the world famous machines and tell their 50 year old history.

Overnight rates at Palazzo di Varignana start from approx €160 per couple for B&B and summer packages are available (see website below). This is very much a place waiting to be discovered and one that begs out to be visited again. Highly Recommended.

                                                                        BOLOGNA

 Bologna is just 18km from Palazzo di Varignana and is the capital of Emilia Romania Region. Noted for the red brick buildings and red roof tops it is affectionately known as ‘Le Rossa’ (The Red One).The old town is recognised as one of the oldest and best preserved in the country.  Remnants of the old city walls can be seen to this day especially around Piazza Verdi. The city’s 900 year old university is the oldest in Europe. When it comes to food Bologna excels especially for tortellini, lasagne, tagliatelle, the Bologna sausage and of course Bolognese sauce locally known as ragu. Never mention spaghetti bolognese to a local because it doesn’t exist. The two towers in the old part Asinelli and the leaning Garisenda are the city’s symbol and are sole survivors of up to 200 house towers from the Middle Ages.  Asinelli is 97m high and offers visitors who reach the top a panoramic view of Bologna. Another of the city’s attractions are the archways (porticos) covering the footpaths and known as the people’s umbrella. They came about due to homeowners extending the first floor of buildings over the footpaths below. The network around the city reaches an astounding 35km. Famous names relating to Bologna include Marconi and more recently author John Grisham whose novel ‘The Broker’  was set here. Bologna is not a large city so a couple of days is sufficient to explore the interesting old town.

Visitor Attractions;

The Basilica of Santo Stefano – situated in a lovely large square of the same name this complex of religious buildings (there were 7 churches originally) is over a thousand years old. Due to restructuring in the early 1900s only four churches remain today and just one is still in use. All the churches were connected with the main entrance through the Church of The Crucifix (containing a 14th century crucifix). Look for the frescoes and medieval cloister. The oldest part is the Church of The Holy Sepulchre   I found this to be a very special place.

The Basilica de San Franceso – this building was completed in 1254 in a French Gothic style with a large marble altar.

Piazza Maggiore – the meeting place for inhabitants of the city. Here you will also find the main tourist office in Palazzo del Podesta.

Statue of Neptune – situated in Piazza Nettuno the famous statue by a Flemish artist has had many changes down the centuries. Every visitor has a photo taken here.

Market Area – the Mercato di Mezzo (Middle Market) in the old town dates back to Roman times.

Located between Bologna and Imola in the Apennine hills – this fascinating medieval village with a thousand year history is beautifully preserved and well worth visiting. Today the village is split into two parallel streets climbing up from the imposing stone gateway to the main square with it’s fortress (Rocca) originally built in 1250. Every second year Dozza holds an art festival inviting famous painters to paint murals on the walls of the houses. Over 90 frescoes are on view throughout the village turning it into an open air gallery and in the 18 festivals held to date over 200 artists have taken part. The next festival is September 2015. The village is dominated by the Fortress which is open to visitors. On the upper floors are many works of art while downstairs in the ancient cellars you will now discover a wine cellar set up by an association of wine producers from the Emila-Romagna region.

No visit to Italy would be complete without bringing home some food and drink items. This region is particularly well known for prosciutto, Bolognese tortellini, parmesan cheese and balsamic vinegar.

Bath Abbey

Bath is a compact city and so easy to get around on foot but beware there are many steep hills to negotiate especially up to the world famous Royal Crescent from the centre. Built on seven hills the city lies between the Cotswolds to the North and the Mendips to the South and is circled by the river Avon. It probably has the best preserved Georgian architecture in the UK with some 5000 listed buildings and was officially recognised in 1987 when UNESCO named the city as a World Heritage Site. The heart of the site is around the famous Roman Baths with thermal springs, in use since Roman times. No visit is complete without a dip in the open air rooftop pool at Thermae Spa open till late in summer. The Thermal baths came into their own once again during the 1800s when people with particular ailments such as gout, flocked to the city for treatment. During that century Bath also became a very popular destination for holidays, to purchases or rent houses and a fashionable place to visit for concerts and other pursuits of that period.

The name always associated with the city is Jane Austen the author who lived here for five years (1801-1806).A special walking tour is available and a museum depicting her life is open all year round. Other well known residents of Bath included the artist Thomas Gainsborough and explorer / missionary Dr.Livingstone. Over the years Bath has gained an unbeatable reputation for wonderful architecture evident in the numerous Georgian squares, crescents and streets, none more famous than 30 houses comprising the Royal Crescent built using the honey coloured local stone. Close by is another famous landmark, the Circus, inspired in design by Rome’s Colosseum.

1754 –construction of The Circus begins comprising 33 houses divided into 3 sections by architect John Wood the younger, taking inspiration from the Colosseum.

On your arrival the first stop should be Bath Tourism office at Abbey Chambers to pick up some brochures including the excellent and useful map/walk guide which includes walking distances and times between major attractions.

This wonderful city with so many interesting places to see (many of the landmark buildings are floodlit at night), is regarded by tourists and local people as one of the finest Spa towns you are likely to see.  However Bath is not all about the past and in 2014 is a thriving modern metropolis containing top class shops, quality restaurants, plus several important festivals and plenty of nightlife. It is also a Green City with lots of walking and cycling routes to follow and an impressive Botanical Gardens. A visit here should be included on everyone’s travel list.

The famous Georgian Town Houses

Royal Crescent –   a semi-circle of thirty fabulous Georgian town houses. The Crescent has been used as the location for numerous films and television programmes including (of course) ‘Persuasion’. Look for the very large Ionic columns on the front of the houses. Hidden away in two central buildings of the Crescent there is the discreet and very luxurious 5* Royal Crescent Hotel. At the rear of the buildings are the upmarket Dower House restaurant, beautiful gardens and exclusive Bath House Spa.              

Bath Abbey – rated as the last of the great English medieval churches. Used for Christian worship over more than a thousand years. Be sure to take the Tower tour to see the clock, bells and to enjoy great views of city and surrounding countryside.

Roman Baths – Situated in the city centre beside Bath Abbey it is Britain’s only hot spring built in Roman times as a temple and bathing complex.

Pulteney Bridge – the only bridge in the country with shops on it and inspired by the Ponte Vecchio in Florence. It was designed by renowned Scottish architect Robert Adam and completed in 1774.

No.1 The Crescent - re-opened last June following a £5m renovation and now including adjoining servant’s quarters. This was the first of the houses built by John Wood the younger. It was occupied for over 20 years from 1776-1796 by Henry Stanford a banker and MP from Co.Roscommon who retired to Bath due to illness and like many others to use the thermal baths. There are 10 rooms to walk around all with authentic furnishings, helping to create a picture of the fashionable lifestyle in the 18th century. There is also a gift shop.

Jane Austin Centre – a must for all the writer’s fans. Learn all about her visits to Bath during the 1800s.Staff throughout the building are dressed in the fashion of the period. Afterwards relax in the atmospheric Regency Tea Rooms. It is situated on the second floor and has received an ‘Award of Excellence’. Serving real leaf tea (exceptional these days) and home- made cakes etc. The Centre is open all year.

Postal Museum – at 27 Northgate Street, now occupying the basement area at the city’s post office. A fascinating inter-active museum and the perfect place to spend an hour or so on a rainy afternoon. The children will enjoy it also. See a rare photo of the Bleriot monoplane taking the first 100 mile ‘Airmail Flight’ from Bath to London in 1912. Learn about the world’s first Christmas postage stamp produced in Canada in 1898.

Hop on-Hop – off bus - Bath offers the choice of two routes ‘The City Tour’ & the ‘Skyline Tour’ with excellent views looking down on the city .I recommend taking both. The Skyline commences from the Railway Station a short distance from one of the city tour stops.

The Queensberry Hotel  4-7 Russell Street is situated a short distance from the Royal Crescent in a quiet residential area. If you like your accommodation small and intimate with impeccable standards of service look no further. Not only is it in an ideal location for exploring the city the owners and staff excel in providing the ‘personal touch’ for guests throughout their stay. On arrival there is a guided tour of the premises then enter your bedroom to find a bedside radio filling the room with soft classical music for complete relaxation. In the spacious and comfortable room a shelf contains a selection of books should a quiet read be required. Downstairs in the adjoining premises is the Olive Tree restaurant used for dinner and breakfast where only the freshest and best of local produce is served. Sadly my stay was much too short and I didn’t even have time to sample the sumptuous breakfast next morning owing to a dash by taxi to catch an early train to Bristol for the flight back to Ireland. However my overnight stay must rate as one of my most memorable hotel experiences in recent years. The Olive Tree is also open to non-residents.

                                                                           FOOD

Two establishments always come up in a conversation when speaking of food in Bath. These are the Pump Room & Sally Lunns.

The Pump Room Restaurant  at The Roman Baths  - superb atmosphere and one of the focal points for city residents to meet for a chat and enjoy the excellent food. Music is provided on a regular basis by a local trio and here visitors have an opportunity to sample the Spa water. My visit last year coincided with the Great Bath Feast festival and the special for the month was confit shoulder of Gloucester old spot pork, buttered Bromham kale, roasted roots, pork crackling, Somerset apple cider sauce – so delicious! The building was opened by Richard ‘Beau’ Nash as a centre to accommodate the fashionable Balls and other social functions during the 17th century. Best to book a table. Note; a queuing system is operated on Sat & Sun. Highly recommended.  

Sally Lunn’s Eating House at 4 North Parade Passage is recognised as the city’s oldest house (1482). The restaurant was set up originally as a bakery by Sally Lunn a French refugee in 1680. Famous for the Sally Lunn Bath bun- exceptionally light semi sweet bread. Open as a museum and restaurant serving morning coffee, lunches and evening meals. Recommended.

Regency tea rooms - (see Jane Austen centre). Recommended.

From Ireland there are regular flights to Bristol ex Dublin or Ireland West Knock with connections by bus or train. Take the boat to Fishguard with car then travel down on the M4. From London take train from Paddington or Waterloo.

                               BRISTOL AND BATH THE PERFECT COMBINATION  

 Although contrasting cities in many respects Bristol andBath situated less than 20 miles from each other equally deserve to be visited either for a short break or longer stay. Both also make a great base for touring and exploring this lovely part of England. Close by is North Somerset noted for miles of spectacular coastline and beautiful landscapes. On a visit last year I spent a couple of really enjoyable days in Bristol before taking the short train journey with First Great Western to spend the remainder of the time in Bath. This week I am concentrating on Bristol known as the capital of the South West and regarded as one of England’s leading green cities.

                                                                           BRISTOL

Bristol a city divided into districts often referred to as ‘Villages’  has a great buzz about it and offers visitors plenty of attractions, nightlife, good restaurants and the recently re-vamped extensive harbour area. Over the years it has been the home of world famous explorers, artists, poets, inventors and engineers, as well as religious and political reformers. Probably it’s most famous citizen was the  renowned architect Isambard Kingdom Brunel who designed the stunning Suspension Bridge, Temple Meads Railway station and was responsible for the construction of the floating harbour. No visit however would be complete without taking a look at his other great achievement the SS Great Britain - the World’s first ocean going liner moored on the harbour.

Art and Culture have played an important part too in the city’s history and the famous Old Vic Theatre (rated as the UK’s oldest continuously working theatre) is a perfect example. The Hippodrome where many famous talents including screen idol Cary Grant first appeared on stage is another attraction. Bristol is rightly regarded as one of the best locations in the country for festivals and many are held throughout the year. The best known internationally is the Balloon Fest (August) when thousands come to watch the enormous colourful balloons floating over the city. There are two companies offering balloon rides.  Thanks to the numerous large parks and estates it is a great location for many outdoor activities such as walking and cycling. Because of this Bristol was recently chosen as European Green Capital for 2015. Plans are on hand to extend cycle tracks even further.

Harbourside -   a vibrant part of the city packed with good restaurants and bars. Call into the Tourist Office here to pick up a copy of the free official visitor guide.

Ferry Service – At the Cascade Steps look for the bright yellow Bristol ferry boats running a daily scheduled waterbus service to seventeen mooring points around the floating harbour.  The perfect mode of transport to catch a train at Temple Meads, visit the SS Great Britain, do some shopping at Broadmead & Cabot Circus, or just sit back to relax by taking the one hour round trip.

Watershed  - in the harbour area and a must- visit place for cinema buffs.  Screening art house films it is very similar in style and ambiance to Dublin’s equivalent the IFI in Temple bar, but much larger. Excellent food served in the busy café. Good place for people watching.  Recommended

The M Shed on Princess Wharf – formerly a 1950s dockside transit shed transformed into a family friendly centre telling the story of Bristol and it’s people through exhibits and latest interactive equipment. The place to visit if you are a Wallace & Gromit fan- a new exhibition entitled ‘Wallace & Gromit From the Drawing Board’ is due to open on 24th May and runs until early September. Free Admission.

Sacred Churches – the city has a strong religious heritage so a guide/map has been produced with the support of DestinationBristol to assist visitors interested in seeing the eight main churches. These include the very fine Bristol Cathedral (Anglican), the Cathedral of Saints Peter & Paul (RC), St.Mary’s Redcliffe noted for the superb Gothic architecture and John Wesley’s Chapel dating back to 1739. 

Sight Seeing Hop-On Hop- Off  Bus – recommended for all city visits. The route has 21 stops with fares from £11 (aprox). Clockwise round trip takes 1hr15mins.   

Millennium Square – here you will find the Planetarium, the Aquarium, At -Bristol Science Centre, and in December a large outdoor ice rink. As you walk around keep an eye out for the life size bronze statue of Cary Grant.

Bansky Murals – these famous murals combining dark humour with graffiti attract thousands of visitors each year. Due to the success of this artist’s work and the hosting of an ambitious permanent street art project in 2011 Bristol City Council produced a street art policy which now defines and supports the display of public art. Walk along Nelson Street and admire but check out all the locations before your visit.

At Bristol- is the home of science and discovery and certainly brings science to life in a fun way. The state of the art building contains many fascinating interactive exhibits and is especially suitable for young people. Make your own animated cartoon, learn about the human body or walk in a tornado. Special area reserved for u8s with their parents is called ‘In the Jungle’.

SS Great Britain moored at the Great Western Dockyard - the first of the great ocean liners has been lovingly restored to her former glory and is now an award winning tourist attraction. Open all year with full wheelchair access and facilities for the blind or visually impaired. Family tickets available.

CLIFTON VILLAGE

This area of the city deserves special mention. Last year was my first visit which turned out to be one of the highlights of the trip. Take the No 8 or 9 First Bus service operating a round trip from the city centre. Clifton is an upmarket area with loads of quirky shops selling crafts, antiques, food and stylish clothes. Look for the old fashioned glass covered shopping centre and the entrance to the Clifton Victorian Rocks Railway, long abandoned, but once a busy underground funicular system in operation from the 1800s to the 1920s. The village, famous for it’s bridge, also has the Botanic Gardens and the Zoo.

The Suspension Bridge was conceived in the late 1700s with 22 entries for the design. A young 24 years old engineer named Brunel entered four and the rest is history. There are free guided tours throughout the summer months lasting 45 minutes and no booking is required.  Be warned the bridge can move up and down by up to 25cm in high winds ! Last year a decision was made to re-locate and enlarge the visitor centre. A fascinating story and the views are incredible.Recommended.

The Bridge Café at the Avon Gorge Hotel - excellent food, great views, well worth a visit (see above).

The Boston Tea Party, Park Street – one of a small group of family owned independent cafes serving excellent coffee and a range of snacks. This is the first and flagship building operating since 1995. Check out the secret garden. Branches on Gloucester Road and Clifton Village. Recommended

The 4 * Bristol Royal Marriott Hotel ,College Green  -  If your preference is to stay in the city centre then look no further than this very fine Victorian styled hotel complete with polished marble and gleaming brass at every turn located close to Bristol Cathedral and just a minute’s walk from the harbour area. There are 226 luxurious bedrooms plus 16 suites and the recently re-furbished large dining room is the ideal place to enjoy an evening meal. The Roman styled leisure centre offers complete relaxation following a busy day exploring the city. A very popular hotel catering for both corporate and leisure markets. Recommended

The Avon Gorge Hotel at Sion Hill in Clifton – this friendly historic hotel in the heart of Clifton Village offers guests superb views of the Suspension Bridge, the Gorge and the village itself. The Bridge café with stunning views is a popular eatery for Bristolians and visitors (try their excellent fish & chips platter) and the attached White Lion bar with terrace also serves good food and is generally packed. 

PUBLIC TRANSPORT – the bus services came in for major criticism from local people for many years due to being unreliable and very expensive but the introduction of bus lanes and electronic schedules at stops has apparently improved the service greatly. I used it regularly during my stay and had no complaints. However it is still quite expensive at £1.70 for a short ride.

GETTING  THERE -  regular flights to Bristol from Dublin or Ireland West Airport  Knock. Take the ferry   to Holyhead and drive.  Trains from London to Temple Meads Station.

Northern Ireland will become awash with pink next month when the Giro D’Italia cycling race begins on these shores over the week-end of 9th - 11th May. The world famous event will take in some of the most attractive scenery in Ireland particularly along the Causeway Coast. While another famous cycle race uses yellow jerseys to indicate the leaders the Giro D’Italia has pink so along the route it is planned to use the colour by way of flags, buntings and even some buildings. The Northern Ireland Tourist Board (NITB) is confident it will attract large numbers of visitors from all over the country and overseas. Taking part will be 200 top cyclists plus a large entourage of back-up teams and race officials. There will also be massive TV coverage of the event to be beamed around the world giving a once-off opportunity to highlight the wonderful scenery this country has to offer visitors. Many towns and villages along the route are organising special local events to coincide with the race. For example Armagh City is going to throw a big ‘Pink Party’. Race routes are as follows;   STAGE 1 on Friday 9th is a Team Time Trial around Belfast starting from the new Titanic building then going as far as Stormont before returning to the city with the finish outside the City Hall, a distance of 21.7km. STAGE 2 (Sat 10th) is named the Belfast to Belfast Road Stage taking in the beautiful Causeway Coastal Drive to include Ballymena, Bushmills, the Giant’s Causeway, Cushendall, Larne, Whitehead and  Carrickfergus, a total of 218km. STAGE 3 (Sun 11th) will be the Armagh-Dublin Road Stage starting from the famous recently renovated Shambles  Market on Cathedral Street in the city centre then going through Richhill, Newtownhamilton and Forkhill  before heading south  to Dundalk, Drogheda, and the coastal route along Skerries, Malahide and Clontarf , finishing in Dublin’s Merrion Square.

Carrickfergus Castle – over 800 years old but altered down the centuries this castle has many interesting historical items on display including cannons used between the 17th & 19th centuries.

Cushendall – a picturesque village with fine examples of Georgian houses and a Curfew Tower in it’s centre. For a great lunch or snack visit Harry’s bar and restaurant on Mill Street. Recommended.

Giant Causeway & Visitor Centre -   the Causeway is a must see destination rated as a designated ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’. Close by is the new state of the art visitor centre complete with interactive displays, fun activities, large screen animation of the legend of Finn McCool and hand held audio guide in 9 languages for visitors to use. Optional bus service every 15 mins brings you to see the amazing formations of the Causeway columns.

ARMAGH CITY

Navan Centre & Fort – regarded as the Newgrange of the North this Fort is one of Ireland’s most important ancient monuments.  On the way visit and chat to the characters from Celtic times in their specially constructed dwelling from the Iron Age to Early Christian times. The exhibition in the Centre telling the history of the area is very impressive.

The Cathedrals –the cathedrals of St.Patrick’s (Church of Ireland) and St.Patrick’s (Roman Catholic) are both well worth visiting. Recommended.

The Public Library- situated in Abbey Street and regarded as one of the oldest in the country is a fascinating place. It is a working library which was established in 1771 by Archbishop Robinson and has been recently restored. Be sure to see the first edition of ‘Gulliver’s Travels’ and a copy with alterations in Swift’s own handwriting. Recommended.

The Planetarium -   the original dome constructed in 1968 –to bring astronomy to a much wider audience- is still used today for sky presentations. See actual meteorites, examples of space travel and much more. A great place to introduce younger people to the world of science.

A good choice is the large and busy Armagh City Hotel on Friary Road which is part of the Mooney Hotel Group.

Food Stops

The 1868 restaurant and wine bar named after the date the building was established as a probate office and customs house. Good atmosphere ,  excellent food.  Recommended.

Uluru Bistro 16-18 Market Street – something different this popular restaurant offers quality Australian cuisine but using mainly local produce. The friendly owner is on hand to explain the Australian method of cooking. Recommended

Harbour View Cartagena

The Spanish region of Murcia can be found in the Southeast of the Iberian Peninsula and is easily accessible from Ireland. It is just 80km from Alicante and lies in the valley of the Segura river surrounded by the hills of Carrascoy, Cresta del Gallo and the Pila mountain range. Climate is dry with mostly all year round sunshine. The capital of this region is also called Murica and not far away is the fascinating port city of Cartagena with many fine 18th century town houses and picturesque harbour area which has been an important maritime gateway down the years. In both cities visitors can trace the centuries through the many impressive Roman ruins, historical buildings, churches, museums, memorials to leaders and in recent years modern state of the art interpretive centres. An enjoyable way to learn about the history is by taking a walking tour with expert guides. Anyone who wishes just to relax best head for La Manga the 250km coastline bordered by 2 seas with calm warm waters all year round – the perfect holiday spot for families with small children. Dad (and Mum) can also get their golf fix with over twenty top courses to choose from, many with hotel or self-catering accommodation. One option is the large and exclusive resort of La Manga Club which has 3 courses. As with most of Spain this region is well known for several important festivals held during the year so before booking your trip have a look at these dates to try and include one on your holiday.

Cartagena

The first city I visited on my trip and I was greatly impressed. I would advise spending several days here to explore the numerous attractions. Cartagena has encountered many changes of ownership through history and has been ruled by the Arabs, the Castilians and for a short period was in self government.

Main Attractions –

The Castle of The Conception -  take the outside high tower lift (opened in 2004) which rises 45mtr in just a few seconds then walk through a small well kept park leading to the Castle. It was the main defence for the city and dates back to the 13th century. Contains an Interpretive Centre outlining the city’s long history. Close by is the Civil War Museum (Museo Refugio Dela) built in 1937 during the civil war. Parts of the shelter were first opened to the public in 2006. Breathtaking views of the city and port.

Roman Theatre & Museum- situated opposite the City Hall. This museum is divided into 2 separate buildings connected by an underground passage leading dramatically out into the original Romain remains built in 1st century BC to hold 7000 spectators.Recommended.

District of The Roman Forum (Molinete) – work is ongoing in what can only be described as a unique look at Roman Cartagena and their expertise at constructing thermal baths. The pictorial wall decorations are particularly impressive.

The Sea wall (Muralla del Mar) was constructed as a military defence in the mid 1700s on the orders of Charles 111.

Auditorio y Palacio de Congresos el Batel – take a walk along the harbour and find this quite amazing very modern conference centre,  also used for the annual jazz festival and concerts. The design of the building was based on the marine history of the city and the luminous interior creates a sense, not only of light, but also great space. Be sure to have a look inside. Highly recommended.

  Tourist Boat Trip – travel on a catamaran around the bay to see various fortifications built to protect the port. Highly recommended.

The Interior

Murcia 

This is another lovely city also worth spending time in. There are many open spaces to linger in plus   Palaces, numerous churches, museums and art galleries to visit. Murcia also contains several fine large Squares (Plazas) to mix with the locals and have a coffee or drink. However the first stop for most visitors is the cathedral. On the way there I took a walking tour along the river to see the famous bridges (including the footbridge designed by Pasarela Manterola (1997) to represent a lighthouse along the quay), the old mill and the strange fish sculpture. Murcia is very much a city in transition with many interesting developments taking place.

Main Attractions-

Cathedral Of Murcia - this magnificent building in Plaza de Belluga was constructed on the site of a Moorish mosque and consecrated in 1467. The façade is a good example of European Baroque art while the naves of the interior highlight the best of the Gothic period. Also in this plaza is the Bishop’s Palace (1748).

The Royal Casino –considered one of the most historic buildings in the city. Dating from 1847 it contains a real mix of artistic styles portraying the opulence of the period. It consists of a Moorish Patio (inspired by the Alhambra), library, ladies powder room, dance hall with large chandelier and a billiards room. In 2006 it was completely restored and refurbished to its former glory. Open to the public except one area which is for members only. Recommended.

The City Market – always worth a visit and Murcia is no exception.  Look out for the locals purchasing their fresh fish before stopping at a small kiosk to have them grilled for eating or takeaway.

                                                              OTHER ATTRACTIONS IN THIS REGION

If touring by car try to visit some of the following locations;

Caravaca de La Cruz Castle/ Sanctuary/ Museum - High up over the town and the pilgrimage site of the Holy Cross (inside which is a wooden fragment believed to be from the wood of the cross Christ was crucified on. The Sanctuary was the last place occupied by monks during the Granada Kingdom period. Caravaca de La Cruz is located in the North West of the region (under 1 hour drive from Murcia) it is very much farming country. The town with many narrow steep streets is worth a visit. Note the large monument in the town centre of the Moor & the Christian.

Wine Museum in Bullas – state of the art museum located inside an old winery(19th C) well worth taking a look and perhaps purchase wine produced in the region from the shop. Pick up a copy of the Bullas Wine route with list of certified establishments.

Mina Agrupa Vicenta at La Union - this mine was the largest in Europe and great source of employment during the mining boom of the 1800s. Take a hard hat tour at a depth of 80 metres to experience what life was like in those days. There are 2,300 sq metres open to the public. This mine was still working until the middle of the 20th century. Recommended.

Balneairo de Archena Resort And Treatment Centre, Archena. An extremely large and popular tourist resort situated 102mtr above sea level. Ideal for those wishing to get away from it all. The clientele is a mix of families with young children (in one section which includes Thermalium swimming pools, leisure areas etc.,) and those with medical conditions who require help from the qualified medical team. There is a choice of 3 hotels on site. Balneario de Archena is the most ancient thermal complex in all of Spain and the current Management team are constantly re-developing and creating new facilities.

El Barrio de San Roque in Cartagena – within walking distance of the hotel. Try the tasting menu.

El Arco, Caravaca de la Cruz – in the town square with outside seating available. Serves good lunches. Friendly staff.

La Tapa De las Flores – Murcia, on Plaza of same name. Busy tapas bar/restaurant. Popular with locals.

Hotel NH Cartagena in Plaza Heros de Cavite - tall modern 100 bedroom 4* hotel, part of a Worldwide chain. Great central location beside City Hall and close to the harbour. Rooms very comfortable and good breakfast served to begin the day. Perfect for car owners.

                                                   PARIS  -  A CITY THAT SHINES IN ALL SEASONS

I have been lucky enough to experience the wonderful city of Paris on several occasions and at different times of the year. Every season brings out the very best of this captivating city whether it is Springtime for romantics, Summer for weather and beach life along the river Seine, Autumn for concerts and exhibitions or Winter for the Christmas illuminations. Over the years arriving as a tourist I have seen most of the major attractions – Pompidou Centre, Eiffel Tower, Arc de Triomphe, Notre-Dame,  the  Sacre-Coeur Bascilica etc., so on a  visit late last summer courtesy of the Paris Convention and Visitors Bureau I decided to concentrate a little more on  the outdoor life .During my short stay this included taking a series of walks along the Seine, visiting parks, going on a walking film tour( to see locations used by film director Woody Allen in his excellent film ‘Midnight In Paris’) and trying out a new exciting  adventure by using a Segway.  

Reading some statistics about Paris you will find out the city welcomes over 29 million visitors from around the world each year, has 80,000 hotel rooms, 297 metro stations (on a good day it takes just 13 minutes to travel across the city) and 20,000 self-service Velib bicycles for use by Parisians and tourists. The city, as everyone knows, is split into areas known as arrondissements, each with it’s own unique historical flavour. They are best described as small villages containing cafes and restaurants, small supermarkets, street market, boulengers (bakeries), and of course a metro station, all within walking distance. Spend a few days in this village scenario, become recognized, and you will feel (almost) a Parisian. However some distance away from the well known attractions Paris can still be very expensive so careful planning is necessary even for a coffee or beer. After splashing out on an evening meal in a Brasserie (essential) look for small family run bistros which usually offer excellent home produced food at reasonable prices, especially the ‘plat du jour’ at lunchtime.

On arrival the first port of call should be the Office of Tourisme at 25 rue des Pyramides (1st) to pick up a copy of the very informative booklets ‘Paris For You’ and ‘Paris Good Food Guide’. Remember to purchase your Paris Viste Carte for unlimited travel 1 to 5 days (also available at large Metro stations).

 ENJOYING  THE  OUTDOOR  LIFE

Along The Seine

Take a stroll along the river at your own pace browsing as you go in the bookseller kiosks and quirky shops along the way before discovering the many historic bridges of Paris. Try not to miss out on at least one walk during your visit. It really is a not to be forgotten  experience. Both banks are equally enticing for the visitor. 

New Cruise  - There are many options for taking a cruise on the river and last year the latest addition was launched by the Vedettes de Paris – the Batostar, a 100% electric boat offering a 40mins cruise taking a trip through time. Boarding is at the foot of Pont Marie (4ther) (metro 7). There is a terrace bar on the houseboat and it’s possible to purchase a special ticket to include a drink.

 The Segway Experience   - can be arranged by contacting a company named Mobilboard who have their office at 32 rue Fabert (7e). Before setting off the guide hands out helmets and then gives a fifteen minute instruction on using the machine, essential for the beginner. The route is along wide footpaths but roads must be crossed from time to time which can be a bit scary .Overall I found it to be an exhilarating and amazing experience especially riding around the base of the Eiffel Tower. Highly recommended. 

The film Location Walking Tour - usually starts from the exit of the Odeon metro close to the large   statue of Danton and is mainly around the Latin Quarter. It takes approx 2 hours and ends beside Notre Dame Cathedral. This is a fascinating tour with Juliette Dubois who has a degree in cinema history. Highlights along the way include various historic buildings relating to the arts where famous lumeries of times past resided, plus several streetscapes used by Woody Allen in his film. Juliette brought us also to Cinema du Pantheon, the oldest cinema in Paris. Opened in 1907 it is still a successful cinema to this day. Upstairs is the Le Salon du Pantheon cafe designed by antique dealer Christian Sapet and French actress Catherine Deneuve. The decor is funky and very different and the cafe has some private seating areas. Guests can enjoy looking at the large coffee table books all dedicated to film. Light lunches and snacks are served all day. Just next door is a fine cinema bookshop.

Public Parks

There are a total of 460 public parks to choose from – I managed to fit in just two.

 Parc Monceau (8th) -close to where I was staying this delightful park, constructed in the 17th century .has many statues, playgrounds for children, plus very old trees and a collection of rare plants. The entrance is through massive wrought iron gates pointed with gold.

Jardin du Luxembourg (6th) was created in 1612 – these charming gardens are the perfect location to sunbathe, or sit and relax watching the world go by. Lots of places for children to enjoy with sail boat races in the pool, pony rides and extra large swings.

Summer Plages - always a popular event especially with Parisians is the transformation of both banks of the Seine between end of July and end of August into a temporary beach complete with deckchairs and sun loungers and there is no charge.

WHERE TO STAY

The 4 * Hotel Relais Monceau at 85 rue du Rocher (8th) is a really delightful place to stay. Originally an  19t century town house there are just 51 bedrooms but all are large (by city standards) and extremely comfortable. It is also ‘very French’, with numerous pieces of antique furniture, chandeliers, a library, an intimate bar and a Chinese salon..The hotel has 16 rooms on each floor all with double glazed windows and old style wooden interior shutters. There are adjoining rooms also available - ideal for parents with young children. Two rooms on the ground floor are designed for guests with disabilities. This is a busy but friendly hotel used by business people and they serve an excellent buffet breakfast including freshly squeezed orange juice (€15 /children u12 no charge). There are 3 separate areas for breakfast, a regular dining space, a veranda overlooking a small garden and an area looking out on to the street. Be sure to notice the colourful floors with a patchwork of Carocim hand painted tiles or old fashioned terracotta tiles. Special offers are available throughout the year depending on length of stay. The Relais Monceau is both comfortable and trendy and considering the location prices are affordable.

Brasserie La Lorraine 2 place des Terns (8th) -  A visit to Paris would not be complete without at least one meal in a Brasserie and this particular one, quite close to the Champs-Elysees, is famous for seafood. A large bustling restaurant with fine art nouveau décor, original mosaics and a popular haunt of celebrities from all walks of life. It is always fascinating watching the waiters in their black waistcoats and white aprons moving at great speed while balancing trays of plates. Open from 7am-1am every day and seafood platters start from €29.50. Meals with Starter & Main course cost from €28 to €52 (prices correct at time of visit).Several Paris Brasseries are now listed as historical monuments.

Restaurant Pinxo , 82 rue Mazarine (6th) - is something completely different and ideal for casual dining. A new style  contemporary bistro by Alan Dutournier offering tapas style food. Duck a speciality.  Closed  Sun & Mon.

Le Coin 88 rue du Rocher located just across the street from the hotel is a perfect example of the small bistro mentioned above.A small cosy establishment with friendly owner. Serves dishes using regional produce supplied by independent producers. Very popular with locals. It is also a wine bar. Open Mon-Fri 7.30am to 4pm & 6pm-11pm. Closed Saturdays during winter months.

The Paris Passages. These beautiful really ornate 19th century Shopping Arcades are dotted around the city centre.

The World famous bookshop Shakespeare & Co selling English language books. This shop succeeded Sylvia Beech’s 1920s refuge for writers Joyce, Hemmingway etc.

 GETTING THERE                                                                                                                

I travelled with Aer Lingus on a return flight, Dublin – Charles de Gaulle (CHG), and took the free shuttle bus to T1 for connection into the city .The simple way is to travel firstly on the RER system (similar to the Dart) before changing to metro for the centre of Paris. A ticket costs €9-50 (no return discount) but can be used throughout your journey to the final destination. Other airlines operating the Paris route include Air France & Ryanair.

TIP - Try to avoid visiting Paris in September and part of October when many high profile conferences take place meaning beds are at a premium and so are the prices.
