While I completely understand your point, and the comparison is hilarious, (now I want a telitubbies au of TOS), bear in mind DISCO was meant to be a bridge between Enterprise (the more militaristic looking blue jumpsuit), The Cage (where the colours were muted blue and gold) and TOS, while also keeping up with the technological advancement our real world is going through and that most new trekkies would have maybe seen the AOS films and so that was the standard of "shininess", for lack of a better word, expected.

Every Trek show and movie reinvents what Trek looks like and I think that's beautiful. S2 of DISCO also did bring in the colours and silhouette closer to TOS that SNW would then lean into while also updating to look like how we expect science fiction to aesthetically feel on screen.

DISCO in s4 and 5 plans into the brighter colours as the overall feel of the show shifts.

You made an excellent point about tone. DISCO s1 is dealing with heavier themes, the costuming reflects that, just like the costumes of DS9 are darker and more "military" than TNG.

At the end of the day it comes down to personal taste and what you consider important in terms of story, aesthetics, tone, and Canon.

SNW has dark leather jackets and tactical vests and things that are reminiscent of the war too.

The darker dominion war uniforms lead into the post war bright uniforms of Lower Decks.

And the war with the Emerald Chain grey.

Followed by colors, when the conflict is over.

Considering how dark the uniforms in Picard are, there should be a bright phase afterwards.
