While testosterone is a controlled substance and there are rules for that as well as general regulations on pharmaceuticals (for example, the prescription expires after 6 months even if you have refills), I recently learned that there is actually a lot more variation than I thought.
When I started T, I was using a 10 mL vial for months at a time since I’m on a low-ish dose. Then a couple of years ago, the pharmacist explained that the recommendations had changed and low/single-use vials are now standard.
When I switched to that, I’d been forced to pick up my T every month because they could only fill it every 28 days, but now I can get a 3 months’ supply just because my doctor wrote the prescription differently (how much can be dispensed at once and how many refills)!
Different pharmacies may also have different policies, so if you’re finding that you’re stuck picking it up every month, it might be worth asking around. Insurance can also play a part too, with limits on how much they’ll cover and how often, and unfortunately, I won’t be much help with that. But I just wanted to throw it out there since these regulations can change and I’m still learning things 8 years later.
